Success! BTW where did you get your new light motor shaft thick foam rubber washer? The Insulator ring. The arm rubber circle cleaned up beautifully too - didn’t have was 40 but brake clean and soap did the trick
@@IanKarr Nope, I did just fine. I'm subscribed and have been referencing a few things here and there. This is my second 914 - a factory black 2.0. My first was a '75 Ancona Blue 2.0... sadly, she succumbed to flames from the classic fuel line recall.
@@IanKarr I absolutely was. I was driving and thought, "hmmm, smells like cookies." Braked for a stop light and the fuel pooled up underneath and it went south from there. Sad day for the '75, but the '73 is infinitely better. No hell hole, no rust, racing suspension, lower miles... on and on. I got a cream puff that just needs a good paint job.
So many new parts! I remember refurbishing or completely remaking nearly the whole headlight assembly when a truck backed into our driver side light back in 1987. Couldn't find parts anywhere.
Just want to say, you're doing an awesome job (IMO). I'm not a Porsche guy(I'm resto-custom restoring a '74 Super Beetle), but I like to watch your videos for tips on how to do a lot of this work
Thanks. My right headlight got smashed and in the 22 years it set outside, much got covered in dirt and rusted. I’m going to have to replace a bunch of stuff on this. I have the front suspension off and have had the auxiliary carrier powder coated by a pro. I’m about ready to buy a stove on Craig’s list and powder coat all the smaller parts - which should fit in a full-sized oven. Going to order front Konis today.
Happy to help! The annoying thing is that the brows have very little room for adjustment. It's all done in those bucket pivot brackets. If the gap between the painted headlight lid and the brow is too tight, make sure that the long edge of the brow is over and in front of the metal lip.
Great video as always. At about 8:47 you mention the stop adjustment screw. Is that for how far the light comes down? One of mine goes a little low and doesn't line up flush with the hood. Hoping to rectify that.
Your preview pane completely obscured the hat. :D What do you use for the outboard screws on the surround and the cover? I wound up using an offset ratcheting screwdriver thingie with interchangeable bits. The space is really tight in there!
Ha! thanks for the heads up (or should I say "hats up"?). Will move the preview. Yeah, that space is super tight. I found if I put a microfiber towel on the turn bucket and a long phillips head screwdriver, I had juuuust enough angle to turn the screw and get it tight. A ratcheting offset sounds cool.
Hey Ian - another great one. Are the brows really just pushed in like that? The 3 rubber stoppers (?) aren't persuaded or pushed through a little more substantially into the body?
Is the spring supposed to be yellow zinc plated? Another great job. Just for fun, have you ever thought about using the white surrounds from the 914/6?
Thanks Jeff! Glad appreciate the kind review. Not sure about the yellow spring. I am sure that it's totally invisible...unless you're changing the headlight ;). I like the white surrounds. But since this is a bumblebee, I want to keep it as stock as possible. Tthe white ones were used on 4's as well...I think until early 73.
Hi Ian, great video. Headlights worked fine for years but suddenly last year they both will go up but only the passenger one will go down. Any ideas on what the culprit may be? I replaced the little black can relays with the new ones from 914Rubber but that didn't solve the issue. Hopefully you have a few thoughts on this, thank you sir! James
Hi James. Check the grey or green wire (I can't remember which one controls "down") on the plastic junction box. Sounds like it may have worked its way off the spade...or maybe has a break in it. Good luck!
So, im wondering, can i install popups on a volkswagen car? Perferably passat or golf and how much would it cost me to do that, also where can i even find the motor and everything else?
Please consider becoming a patron...we have cool hats! www.patreon.com/iankarr thanks!
I owe you a few beers or several cups of coffee. Your 914 videos have saved me "millions" of hours as my own project reaches completion. Thanks again.
Nice to know the blood from my knuckle busting serves the greater good
great. Doing mine today! Sandbalsting the assembly and buckets first. Very helpful video!!!
You can do it, Frances! Can't wait to see you driving!

Great video! I cannot wait to start this process. I plan to zinc plate all the parts that need it as well.
Go for it!
Fantastic video. It includes everything you need to know in a clear and concise form and no BS filler to waste your time. 5/5 stars!
Thanks, Everett. Appreciate the positive review!
"Shouldn't it be 5/5 jack stands up"? Haha!
@@gnrrpreacher Ha!
Thanks, Ian. I just rebuilt mine this week after acquiring the missing headlamp relays.
Great! Hope you didn't catch your fingers in the mechanism when you plugged em in. Please subscribe for more!

Nice video! I enjoy seeing someone actually "performing " a restoration, rather than just showcasing the final product. Keep up the good work !

Another great video Ian. I am about to do one on an Opel GT rotating assy and my detail will be, in part, a thanks to this.
Glad it helped. I love Opel GTs!

excellent video, friend a question ... where can I get the new parts to repair the headlights
914 Rubber sells a lot of them. For the original stock parts no longer available, try posting a WTB on 914world.com

Nope. They're held in by the rubber sides and the force against the metal front. Glad you liked the video!

How do you get the rubber relay receptacle out without damaging it
Mine were still pretty pliable and I just went carefully.
Where did you resource the vacuum line kit?
Either pelican or AA. I don’t recall!

It is posible to put headlights pop up to any cars sir?
Adding pop up headlights to cars that didn't come with them would be difficult
