the saddest part about this episode is that those villagers ended up hating zuko more than they hated hate those scumbag soldiers just because he s fire nation. He protected them, risked his life saving them and they still hated him after all that

    • @MrKingYuji
      @MrKingYuji Місяць тому

They hated him because he was the Fire Prince and heir to the throne. Any random firebender could be excused but Zuko boasted about being the son of the Fire Lord, knowing Lee just lost his father and brother to the war.

Azula smiles at the end because her father is in power and she adores him and he rewards her and her behavior. Originally, they were merely royal family, but now they are in power. She is actually second in line by her age. Zuko is the oldest so he is next, but he's obviously disturbed by his father acquiring the title, despite now being his heir.

This episode is at the heart of Avatar. It shows deep thought about people and systems, war in particular. No easy answers. All of Zuko's decisions make total sense, but so do the townspeople's. All of it is incredibly human, moving, and tied together well. Zuko Alone is one of the best episodes of television ever.

What makes you guys really good reactors is that not only how you react while watching the show, but also how you pay attention to details and really understand what's going on. I also love the thoughts you gave after finishing each episode.
Because there are some reactors who didn't really pay attention to detail and always give their own ridiculous theory while watching.

    Great reaction as usual 😊😊.
Out of all the 61 episodes in ATLA this is the only ep the gaang isnt present (i mean the title is Zuko Alone lol).
Theres a LOT of things i wanna say
    1. It shows why Uncle Iroh turned away from the ideals of the Fire Nation. He realized after losing his son just how much pain he was causing the citizens of the Earth Nation. He likely was horrified of realizing how many people he deprived of their fathers, sons, grandsons, etc. He understood that the Fire Nation's war was full of shit.
    2. It shows how Zuko really isn't a bad person at heart. He's just in a Effed up positon. He came from a broken family. His grandfather convinced his own father to kill him just to prove a point, his sister is a complete sociopath, his uncle was the most feared general in the Fire Nation, and his mother disappeared.
    3. This is the episode where Zuko gets a clear look at just how horrible the Fire Nation's invasion has been on the Earth Kingdom. Families have been destroyed, people are living in fear, and there are soldiers using the war to extort the people they are supposed to protect. Zuko entered the Earth Kingdom, viewing its people as nothing but obstacles in the way of capturing the Avatar.
    4. It shows Zuko the painful reality of prejudice. The Earth Kingdom has been ransacked for so long that its citizens HATE anyone coming from the Fire Nation and honestly, no one should judge them too harshly for it. Even after Zuko takes a terrible beating to save a child and liberate a town, the citizens STILL shun him due to his origins. This planted the seed of Zuko realizing that the Fire Nation has not inspired anything good outside of its borders. It has brought nothing but fear, pain, and hate.
    5. What the old man said about Zuko is the third time Zuko has heard the painful reality of how he should start to realize just how terrible his father is. The first was when Zhao pointed out that if Ozai really loved Zuko, he would accept him with or without the Avatar. The second time was when Azula told Zuko just how much of a disgrace he was in the eyes of Ozai and how he would only accept him back as a prisoner. The old man, who is an outsider, points out just how sad and pathetic it is that Zuko would desperately seek the approval of a man who burned his face and banished him just for talking out of him turn when he was just a kid. The fact that Zuko's shame had now reached the common people was likely thethe citizens STILL shun him due to his origins. This planted the seed of Zuko realizing that the Fire Nation has not inspired anything good outside of its borders. It has brought nothing but fear, pain, and hate.
    6. While Zuko is a late bloomer when it comes to firebending hes actually a prodigy in hand to hand combat. So, in other words if Ozai had given Zuko a proper chance he couldve had a Prodigy Firebender (Azula) and a Prodigy Swordsman (Zuko).
    7. The way Azulon gets offended and punishes Ozai by having zuko killed is Brutal but it honestly makes me think that Ozai could be an Unwanted child. I mean think about it. Ozai and Iroh are brothers but they have a huge age gap between them. Even in the present Ozai barely has any gray hair whereas Iroh is all White haired. Its never been confirmed but Ozai could be concubines son since they were a thing back in the day.
The fact that a show can have so much depth and make me type so many words speaks for itself.
Zuko Alone is my favorite Book 2 Episode and hes not even my Favourite Character. Thats saying something. And this Episode is just *chefs kiss* .

Cut from the same cloth is an excellent summary of Azula and Ozai. You can see in this episode that even at a young age she was very cold and unsympathetic, but you also see where she gets that from. While the grandfather wasn’t so terrible to condone Ozai’s plot, he was still a rotten individual. Ozai became worse than his father and Azula worse than Ozai. Such a revealing episode.

Fun fact (Fire Lord)Azulon died after being secretly poisoned by his son, Ozai. The poison was provided by Ursa, who did so to protect her son, Zuko, after Ozai was ordered to kill him by his father.

Just started watching your reactions, and I'm really loving them! 😍
    Possible SPOILER (Idk) 🤷🏽‍♀️:
Meesh, maybe you could read this comment first and decide whether it is spoiler free before letting Dee read it. I tried my best to keep it spoiler-free, and I think I succeeded, but my little essay dives deeper into Azula's and Ozai's personalities, and we get to learn more about them later on, so I am not completely sure that my comment is spoiler-free😅🤷🏽‍♀️
Just a few things I want to say: While this episode focuses much on Zuko, of course, and shows how he is not a bad person at heart, it also shows more of why Azula and Ozai are the way they are. True, Azula had psychopathic tendencies at a young age, but you already know how good she is at reading people, so she probably did pick up on her mum not liking her as much as Zuko. I say 'like', because Ursa (that's the mum's name) probably loved both her children, even Azula, but she didn't like her. She always shut her down immediately and while it surely isn't easy to manage a kid like Azula, punishing your child when it does a bad thing or says a bad thing, while always praising your other child even when they fail will spark a lot of contempt in your difficult child. It's clear that Azula didn't get the same love from Ursa as Zuko did, so maybe she became so ruthless to get some approval from her other parent.
Also, someone else already pointed out that Ozai might have even been an unwanted child or not even legitimate. The thing is, Azulon clearly preferred Iroh and didn't think much of Ozai, which is kinda what Ozai does to Zuko. Ozai thinks that Azula is like him, because she's a ruthless kid and unfairly a secondborn, but in his treatment of his kids, Ozai kind of makes Zuko be more like him. I'm not saying that Ozai once was like Zuko, but I think it is an interesting observation when you think about it. Maybe Ozai sees his "weak" or "bad" traits in Zuko, and that's why he treats him like shit. After all, if Ozai's birth was not planned, then he is the one who was "lucky to be born".
I'm not making excuses for Ozai, just telling you what I've noticed. And to be honest, I always wondered how Ozai ended up the way he did, and I think making him so much younger than Iroh was a great way of alluding to that. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Hello there! SO glad you found us, hehe! 🙃 Appreciate the spoiler warning, although I don't consider this a spoiler. I loved how they showed Ursa's relationship with Azula in this episode too. It's truly fascinating to see the subtle nuances that later show Azula's vulnerabilities throughout the series, adding an extra layer of complexity to her character. Great insights! -M 🫶

If you pay attention to the flashbacks and keep track of the timeline, you will notice that the royal family of the Fire Nation became more and more corrupt throughout the war. Playing games of empire will do that.

iroh getting that dagger from a "general that surrendered" always strucked me as weird and i never knew why, but i just realised it's because the dagger specifically says "never give up without a fight", so like, either the show is making a really cynical point about the army of a country which is being invaded being full of big-talk cowards, or they really killed that general and iroh is whitewashing the story to his family

9:39 to me Azula grew up ruthless but I think her soft side is dry snitching to her family. If you rewatch the flashbacks and even future or past episodes she's always divulging her plans, as calculating she is she seems to always tell a little bit of truth.
To me the backstory showing how Zuko was raised and how Azula was raised especially during the Showcasing of Firebending progression scene always feels like Ozai has been secret passing his philosophy and training onto his daughter, because Zuko has always Graviated to Uncle Iroh and his Mother the good ones of the family.
Azula is definitely a menace but I think it's her own way of crying for help and attention from the mother. Thinking what she says is Right but it's usually morally wrong.
Zuko Alone. Is one of my favorite Darker Episodes that continues the show.
I also like the quote from Zuko explaining the two swords to the kid, because it symbolizes himself. and foreshadows a upcoming movie episode.
This shows unique tie ins are amazing

In the flashbacks Ozai is already teaching Azula one on one, and everything she says is what shes heard him say. She’s parroting her dad because he gives her attention while her mum not only thinks there’s something wrong with her, but says so, in front of her. She clearly prefers Zuko, which in turn makes Azula want to be more like her dad, which makes her more cruel to please him. Ursa may have loved her kids but she was a terrible parent to Azula.

This was an amazing episode. I just like the Zuko focus as you get more of his backstory as well the wonderful relationship/bond he has for his mother despite the hatred his father and grandfather has towards him. It really shows how complex of a character he truly is.
And seeing him do a good thing like robbing the couple early in the episode and saving the boy against the Earth nation soldiers shows there's still good which means hope that he will change for better. But anyway I hope you two have a wonderful day. Stay safe, take care and stay amazing Meesh and Dee.

Zuko was raised in a culture where following orders without question is considered the pinnacle of loyalty and honor. At the same time, stabbing your own family in the back if it gains you enough is just fine. As a prince he's been sheltered from how the real world works for most of his life. He's seeing first hand how screwed up the Fire Nation's actions truly are.
I don't think Azulon ever planned on Ozai, or his offspring, ever ruling the Fire Nation. Iroh is level headed, fair, and respected for his actions. Ozai is a psychopath, with delusions of grandeur, and absolutely no moral compass. I long suspect that Azulon ordered Ozai to kill his own son to rip Ozai's family apart. He knows Ursa would never allow Ozai to kill Zuko. And, he knows that Ozai, to protect his own skin, would never openly disobey his father the Fire Lord. What Azulon didn't count on was the two of them working together to assassinate him.
Also, Azulon used the term "beloved son" to describe Iroh's son, Lu Ten. I believe that Ozai didn't have the thought or even the capacity to think that Azulon would be morning his first grandchild. At the point Azulon was done with him. Even if Ozai killed his own son Azulon would've had him banished for killed for slaying his own son. Ozai's family would be banished at the very least. Iroh would have to take the throne because no one would be left. Yeah, it's all a fan thinking out scenarios that didn't happen. But, I believe that it fits the actions of everyone.

  • @tee_saw
    @tee_saw День тому

What's crazy is Ozai probably would've been firelord after Iroh anyway. I dont think Iroh would've had it in him to stay firelord long. After failing the siege and losing his only child, it is too much for him imo. Not to mention, Ozai would be plotting and the proud citizens of the fire nation would find him shameful.

Azula is a sociopath. The tragic thing is that sociopaths are able to learn empathy, but not in the environment she was raised in. Uncle Iroh was pretty much the only member of the royal family who could have taught her that, and she probably drove him away. Mom might have taught her, but you found out that she left while they were young.
It is heavily implied that she murdered grandfather to save Zuko's life.
