    You might like to know that Molly was poised for an international career at one point, and was even based in LA for a while. Unfortunately the label and/or management was very focused on her losing weight, so she ultimately lost interest and moved back home to Sweden. I suspect she draws from that experience when singing this song. It's also probably the reason this didn't lead to much else - the American music industry probably views her as "difficult", as the music industry tends to do when they don't get their exact way.

      Thank you so much for this information. I so totally agree. I think that it was a blessing in disguise for Molly that The Musical Industry in LA, this satanistic industry, and she did not get along. They did not succeed to destroy her. And she move home to Sweden again.

      So much sounds like the story of Saara Aalto in the UK. We need to stop this ridiculous non-script American dominance of our music cultures. Europe has the foundation for our own music. We have so many traditions.

    • @ollep9142
      @ollep9142 11 місяців тому +1

      It was her contacts in LA that, more or less by chance, gave her this "gig".

    • @mememooree

      Great insight and a positive argument against corporate intrusion into the arts. Respectfully, the commenter indicting the "American dominance" (while not without fault) is not completely forthright. The British music manufacturing industry dates back to the Beatles through today (from the Sex Pistols to the Spice Girls). Eurovision, which plays into this song as well as several other great bands, contributes to the corporatism of music (and yes, this includes the monstrosity that is "Idols" and "Got Talent" machines).

    • @hackapump
      @hackapump 10 місяців тому

      @@mememooree Thanks. Yes, I feel I should point out that I never meant to single out the LA ”chapter” of the music industry, (or the American industry as a whole), although it may well rank among the worst. (The bigger the money, of course the worse it gets). And not because it doesn’t deserve it, but because they ALL deserve it. The music industry has always been a hellscape for artists everywhere, all over the world. And artists have been systematically screwed since day one, back when labels brought in unwitting travelling musicians from the street and paid them a minimal one-time fee for a recorded performance. Some have successfully fought back, but not without gaining a reputation of being ”difficult”, or even crazy, (see Prince for example). But they are few and far between. And now that no one pays for music anymore, it’s worse than ever. It’s hard to recommend a career in music to anyone these days, sadly. (Not unless you’re already established and have some serious clout).
      For someone like Molly, who by the way is a beautiful and charismatic, wildly talented young woman with no weight issues whatsoever, there is no doubt in my mind the best course of action was to regroup back home. She is talented enough that the ”mountain will come to Mohammed”. Which is exactly what happened in this instance. Meanwhile she’s enjoying a prosperous career in her native Sweden, (and Scandinavia at large). Bottom line: Mental health is a serious issue in the industry, (as evidenced by the disproportional number of early deaths, and the wide acceptance of self-medication), and you need to take care of yourself - no one else will.

      That performance (recorded the night before the awards) is my absolute favorite as well. In that production I think it's only Molly that isn't a local resident. All musicians are local, and you have the local school choir (though some of the kids had to borrow a "lopapeysa" from a relative or friend, since they didn't have one of their own).
      You have the typical Icelandic weather (cold, rain and windy) and the other contents of the lyrics:
      Húsavík itself.
      Skjalvanda, the water off Húsavík.
      When the camera zooms out at the end you can also see the northern light in the sky.
      In the recording used for the movie Molly's pronunciation in the Icelandic parts of the lyrics isn't nearly as good as in the Húsavík performance.

Sad to hear they (producers), didn’t give her the opportunity to show her chops internationally. She certainly has everything to be a very successful artist.

    Husavik! I listened to it driving through Husavik a couple of years ago and for the first time payed attention to the line "Where the mountains sing." The thing is that the night before I and my wife - then fiancé - had the privilege of actually hearing a mountain sing to us. Three long notes that changed in a harmonic way, over and over again. The wind can´t do that.

    Huseby is an Old Norse expression for the settlement of the local chief/Lord. Around 250 farms/places have that name in South Norwsy and South Sweden. Later the word "hus" was used for arm castles in Scandinavia.
    Vik is a Scandinavian word for a bay and in Old Norse also a name for a fiord. Hus(a)vik is a name for the place where the local chief had his ships.

    Thanks for reviewing this, I wondered if anyone would. It is so beautiful. The Fire Saga movie is one I watch when I need a lift, movie was totally up my alley in terms of sentiment and cinematography. I liked the music and musical sequences a lot. I feel/felt like you did, goose bumps, after the movie and after this version of Husavik. I wonder if Molly is just well known and appreciated in Europe... and doesn't get much play in North America. I fully expected to hear a lot more of her work after that movie but one does have to seek it out. Are you familiar with John Grant? Not connected to Molly that I know of but I bring him up because he is an American singer/songwriter who is far better known and appreciated in Europe. I am a huge fan of his, his voice and fiery emotional expression... I could go on a lot. Anyway, if you haven't heard him, there are many UA-cam videos, some of my favorites are from a performance he did with Allan Toussaint, or a full concert at Ancienne Belgique, if you want to have a look.

    Im so glad to see someone else recognizes the enormous impact this song has. My experience with the movie Eurovision was much the same as yours. I think the reason the song is so important and should have gotten more attention than it did is because its a song for the world about the great admiration and love so many have for the small towns and the people who live their they have as family and friends and al it means to them. It captures the emotion of the desire to leave that small town and spread your wings, and what a great many discover that they are leaving what they really love behind, and thats a mistake, a mistake they decide they do not want to make.
    Life isnt always easy in small towns. The smaller friendlier communities have both their advantages and disadvantages, but in the end, when YOUR people are all there, its so so difficult to justify leaving that for the hope of anything that could ever be better. Growing old with those you love around you is priceless. TO live an entire life that way is beyond priceless for many. Its a life no money or fame can replace for those who feel that way.
    This song literally lays bare the emotions of someone who has felt the tug and seen the reasons of why they should move from their home town, but knows the value of the reality of staying there simply is irreplicable to them by default.
    For someone who hanst had that 'hometown" experience, the sheer depth of all this is never going to be realized to the true extent of what it means to those who have.
    And as I said, small hometown life isnt always easy, and for some the better choice will be to leave. But as this song shows, for countless millions around the world, their hometown and the people in it becomes a huge part of who they are and how they feel about everything they know of. Leaving it behind is often a dream so many determine can never provide a life they will ever cherish as much as living out a life with all the people they were young with, and are now a part of who they are to their core.
    And because small towns exist around the world, its a song for the world. We are not so different.

    She seems to sing exactly on the lower edge of what she´s capable of. Which I, maybe because I´m a man, feel is very touching. I had the opportunity to sit fairly close to the great American / and a little Swedish too / opera singer / soprano / Barbara Hendricks on a outdoor concert many years ago, and when she used her lower register, low in her chest... something broke in me. It´s as if they deliberately give up their strength, they open up for their vulnerability. I love it!
    Also the limited amount of wailing that Molly Sandén uses in this performance is classy. It´s far too often overused I believe.

    I don't know any vocal teachers who speak about the voice without trying to sing what they mean in the way you do. Its kind of impressive that youre trying to talk instead of sing your explanations lol

    I think there is some (mild) autotune on the vocals. Not sure why, because she is a great singer.

      It's not even mild, it cuts through really hard and I don't know why, because Molly has an absolutely amazing voice! Though I read somewhere that she was extremely hungover when she recorded it so maybe her voice wasn't up to par and they used auto-tuner to pitch it perfectly. Sadly they overdid it like many of todays producers do. Auto-tuner is a wonderful tool if you use it gently but easily turns into something horrible and static when overdone.

    You should listen to this from a harbor in Island when she even has the child choir singing. It's the original and much better than this! Search, Molly Sanden - Husavik (Live at Oscars)

    Too bad they dont sing in their own language anymore. This would have sounded much better in Swedish. Now it just sounds like any other modern pop song.

    Autotune....compare with Agnetha Fältskog from ABBA and an age long before autotune...

      The saddest part is that Molly definitely doesn't need auto-tuner but some auto-tuner damaged producer decided to use it anyway because that is the modern sound. 🙄

    Molly can sing, I knew that, but this is overly "produced" and that takes away her true talent.

    That was beautiful, in all aspects. And since I was curious about the movie, I found a free version online. The things that made me break it off was the transgender weirdness, and the emphasis on sex in an intensely ugly manner, and on external looks, and playing cool, while suggesting hot. I've seldom seen such a bad and highly predictable movie script.
    If this is a movie favourite to many, I truly believe that I'm living on a different planet Earth.

    • @lenaforsgren
      @lenaforsgren 11 місяців тому

      Mostly reverb, but actually it sounds like there is also autotune. Which she doesn’t need since I know she has no problems staying on pitch. I guess they wanted that sound, if there is autotune.

    • @Musiknird
      @Musiknird 11 місяців тому

      @@lenaforsgrenit's auto-tune and a lot of it! You very clearly hear it peak several times due to setting the threshold very tight. I don't know why though because Molly has an extraordinary voice. Too sad it's often an auto-tune damaged producer that thinks heavy auto-tuning is a great modern sound when it in fact kills all the organically sound of the voice and song and it becomes static.
