Most people, I would say somewhere in the region of 99% of the planet, doesnt know who won any award, during any year. Its not relevant to pretty much everyone, uncluding you. One is a bad actress at the best of times and the other has had maybe a dozen better roles before the film they won for. Dicaprio won because he hadn't won before and was overdue. The movie he won for was ok, but not great. Doesn't matter. Leo would be happier with an award and we can slap "starring academy award winner" on the posters. Just this past year we had two Asian winners and a previously sexually assaulted former superstar. Thats because a couple years people bitched that asians weren't getting their fare share and Me Too gave Frasier a bump. Nothing against any of the winners but they arent winning on merit, its just attempts at social justice from the wealthy elite. Keep on watching though. @johnny ember depends who you ask. As a foreigner in Iceland, I thought she was native, because her Icelandic is better than mine, but my partner is native and he said that the Icelandic parts spoiled the whole song for him, because they are really rough sounding and stood out to him in a bad way.
So it isn't, is it? Something not seen at Eurovision for 20 years can't be more Eurovision than what HAS been seen at Eurovision for 20 years. You didn't really think that through, did you?

For everyone curious about the line “where the whales can live cause they’re gentle people” Husavik is a well-known and popular area for whale watching!! She’s not just talking about some random ass whales. They’re really a part of her hometown! Sigrit
Y 20 X I mean, there are lots of people commenting about it. Just thought I’d give that little bit of info. I don’t think people know that Husavik is a whale-watching town based off of the whales jumping but maybe I’m wrong :D
I've never been so proud to be Icelandic. And I'm not even Icelandic! What a beautiful song. I have to keep listening to it and I cry every time. Peace everyone.
Molly Sandén is such a great singer and I’m so happy she finally gets some recognition outside of Scandinavia! She has done English songs in the past but her Swedish ones is the best. You should look her up, if you like “Husavik “ you will definitely love “Rosa himmel”. Trust me
You're right but I love all the songs which I guess you do too. Is it just me who feels that I'm kind of Molly Sandén's fan number one LOVES HER SO FUCKING MUCH !!
I far prefer her voice to Adele’s, who has a distinct English pub singer tone that she can’t get away from, no matter how classy shy tries to make herself!
The line "Where the whales can live 'cause they're gentle people" gets me every time. Congratulations to the Icelandic people for developing a beautiful country!
Except for last 2 years Iceland has killed more than 1500 whales since 2003 .. hopefully tourism will bring more good than killing them. Now Norway is the main “killer” along with Japan.
@@anastasme I think that's exactly why they included that lyric. She's singing about Husavik specifically, where they do protect and allow whales to live. And there in particular, a highlight is whale watching, instead of hunting. Even the biggest whale museum in the world is in that town.
@@psammiad well you can think of it in two ways. The simpler explanation is bad sentence structure. "They" refers to the Húsavík townsfolk, not the whales. Whales in their town can live cause they aren't hunted by the gentle townsfolk there (perhaps unlike in other parts of Iceland). Think of it written instead as: Where the whales can live---- cause they're gentle people in my hometown (Húsavík). Second explanation is the whales are likened to gentle "humans" themselves and thus should not be killed. I mean they're often referred to as "gentle giants" themselves. 😊😅
Considering she's from Sweden, she is very good at Icelandic! I'm from Iceland and i can say, it's a hard language when you don't speak it at all. I speak it all the time and I'm not even good at it
I was looking for this kind of comment! As a Swede I have little fate in me being able to properly pronounce Icelandic words! Maybe better than a non-nordic person but....glad she did it well!
The first time I heard this song wasn't the movie it came on my car radio. Mind you I am from the midwest but have spent my entire adult life in the Navy and rarely see home. This song brought me to tears so much I had to pull over and get it out. I have never heard a song that has struck me as if I had lost my own parent. A real spear to the soul. I can only imagine how the songwriter felt.
To the writer, producers, director, cast & crew, composers, writers & performers of the original songs, and specifically Will & Rachel, I want to take this moment to say "thank you". From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU. Thank you for producing the funniest, most heartfelt comedy of the year. At a time of unprecedented darkness and despair, you graced us with a feel-good experience full of inspiration, love, kindness, and an absolutely amazing collection of original songs that will most assuredly make this movie a cult classic for years and decades to come. This movie is exactly what the world, as well as me personally, needed. Please know that you are greatly appreciated for the gift you have bestowed upon us. Thank you so very much.
let me cross my finger or hold my thumbs for this too - we here in Germany want to see Molly represent Sweden next year ♥ - amazing artist (she was outstanding in the JESC 2006) but now she is worldclass ♥
I’m from the United States and I think she deserves to be as big or even bigger than some singers here. I can’t believe I’ve never heard her before. She’s so underrated
I am from Sweden and even tho I’m not Icelandic I can relate to the feeling of what she sings about with seagulls, mountains and magic northern lights. This song is AMAZING 😭 I cried so much watching this!!! Tack Molly! ❤️❤️❤️
I'm from India and it still knocks the wind out of my lungs every time she sings, I know nothing of the things she sings about but it feels magical nonetheless.
Englishman living in a small Danish town. Totally relate to this comment - even though the only whales I saw here were porpoises. And our biggest mountain isn't even 200 metres.
Living in Sweden I really never cared much about Molly...Sure you know who she is..Some of her songs and that she is talented. Watching this movie an POFF Im a fan. Well done Molly Sanden I loved this
I’ve always liked Molly. But I totally agree with you, after hearing this song I’ve become one of her biggest fans. She has evolved into a world class singer and must be one of our greatest singers alive today. And that’s saying a lot!
This song equals "Never Enough" from The Greatest Showman, but this one gives me more goosebumps, because of the use of the Icelandic language. Beautiful sounds. I was so pleasantly surprised by this movie. Expected a rather poor comedy, got a respectful fun and moving film instead.
Yeah you read my mind... the beginning reminded me of that as well... gmta 😉 though I especially love the live tryout version of "this is me" where you hear hugh jackman react when she hits the emotional part...
@@darkiee69 Hate to break it to you but Netflix original movies are counted just like those that studios put into theaters in regards to the Academy Awards. In fact Netflix had the most nominations for the 2020 Awards, with A Marriage Story and the Irishman leading the way.
Bro, this song gives me goosebumbs every time. Such a beautiful song. This is why I love music so much. It makes even a cold hearthed person as me to actually feel something.
I consider myself as quite tough, but there is something in her voice and the text that kills me complete emotionally. I listen to that song for about 48 hours now while I'm awake.
When I was about 15 there was a girl in one of my friends school that was entering the Junior Song Contest. Today, that girl sings this incredible song, one of the best written and performed song I've heard in quite some time, possibly ever. I don't think I have ever felt the kind of emotion this song triggers, it's kind of amazing. This song has touched the entire world, and I am so impressed with Molly's performance.
Be with you, with you. In Húsavík by Skjálfanda, in my hometown. The only thing I desire is, to be with you. Be with you, with you. In Húsavík by Skjálfanda. (Skjálfanda is the bay where Húsavík is located)
"Where the mountains sing through the screams of seagulls, where the whales can live cause they're gentle people" is one of the most beautiful lyrics ever
This is the part were I start to stutter and my eyes get wet, while singing along... "Where the mountains sing through the screams of seagulls Where the whales can live 'cause they're gentle people In my hometown, my hometown" I absolutely love this song! Thank you for singing it from the heart for all of us. You should definitely win a prize for it! Thank you, @Molly ❤😇
Why do I choke up every time she starts singing in Icelandic? I'm American. But this song regardless of where u are from we can all relate to thus song in our own way. Such a beautiful song
Shes really good.....and Gorgeous. Great recognition for her. But if you want to hear the best singer out of Sweden, just my opinion☺.....then you need to listen to Jonah Nilsson from Dirty Loops.
You say that until you hear Sanna Nilsén. She probably lady queen vocalist in our country. Du säger det till du hör Sanna Nilsén Hon är förmodligen honan med bäst röst i sverige ;)
Mikael Andersson Hon är duktig hon också, ingen tvekan om saken. Men Molly, hon är lite bättre om du frågar mig. Liksom Sanna här ovan skriver, det handlar ju trots allt om musik/smak after all
_Husavik My Hometown_ is the most touching Eurovision Song Contest song that never made it to the Eurovision Song Contest💖 I am so impressed by Molly and her voice. To simply say well done is not enough. I love this song.
I'm not even Icelandic and this gives me a sense of pride and joy. It's just so beautiful. She has the voice of a goddess. I hadn't cried in awhile, but this song came out of nowhere when I was watching the movie and I just cried my eyes out and curled up in a ball. It's not meant to be a sad song, obviously, but I just...let out all kinds of emotions I had bottled up for 2 years...this song was like therapy to me. And again...weird, because I'm not even Icelandic, but still.
Been a long time since a song caused a tear. Not afraid to say that that. Not one bit. This girl has the voice of an angel. Nevermind Eurovision. If aliens came down I'd let her represent the planet. Amazing.
I can't get through this song without choking up. I love this movie, I love this song and I love this brilliant singer. This is the best song I've heard in years. It better win the Oscar.
Thanks Molly. Never could I imagine that a song in a Will Farrel movie would have more meaning and emotional impact than any Eurovision song have ever had for decades. Every ounce of this song is love for home. The switch to icelandic brings it out even more.
Molly, I'm 49, and for the 1st time in my life I have finally connected with another country and another language in a profoundly deep way thanks to your gift. Listening to you sing changes me. I cried every single time the first 8 times in a row through the whole song, with no understanding as to why, which has never happened to me before! You swept away to this place I've never, and somehow make me feel I had to have been born there in a past life. I am so grateful. It hit's me so hard when you start singing Icelandic. I had no idea the language looked so beautiful in script, and could sound so beautiful to music. Endless thanks to everyone involved, and every iteration, and you have become one of my favorite vocalists of all time. I hope it can bless you to know I typically do whatever I must to avoid any kind of singing, I listen to instrumental pieces almost exclusively, and you are at the top of a very short list of favorite vocalists.
Can somebody tell me why I get emotional when the guy says ‘she’s singing in Icelandic’. Every time. What a beautiful song. Would win any Eurovision hands down can you imagine if the U.K entry was like this!
Mee too! Alway super emotional when he says that! I'm not from Iceland but I love that Nation as much I love my own one. Have been in Iceland 6 times and I'm in love with places and people, can't wait to go back "home".
I'm not sure if you're asking this as a rhetorical question or not but it's emotional because many countries around the world have to adopt English in lots of different situations including songs. This leads them to feel somewhat repressed and like they can't fully express themselves in their native tongue. For the characters to hear her singing unexpectedly in their native language makes them feel pride and like they are being properly represented, seen and heard by the world.
The movie is all heart ♥. It went from a quirky piece to my favourite movie of the year in a flash and stole my affection. And in no small part because of this stunning Song elevated by a heavenly voice. Instant fan. 😀👏👏
i think something is a bit off with it overall, it wasnt funny enough ,they had 2 hours of it too. but for someone who loves Eurovision who was gonna pick holes, I thought it was pretty good.
Agreed! I felt like it was a fun silly little movie to get my daughter to laugh while we’re home so much and then the end went in hard for all the feels.
🎤💯 That heavenly voice is none other than Molly Sandén! Other incredibly beautiful songs by her: Freak, Like a Phoenix, Sand, Rosa himmel, Mirage, Det bästa kanske inte hänt än, Like no ones watching, Den som e den, California dreams, Större, Rygg mot rygg, Va det då, Utan dig, Youniverse, Ingen som jag, Undanflykter, Satellites, This party, A little forgiveness.. PLUS she also sang Rapunzel songs in Disney’s Tangled (Swedish). 🇸🇪 🏰
This song actually made me cry, im not sure why....also why have we never heard of this sensational singer before, i dont think i could ever get tired of hearing this song...
Molly Sanden's perfect voice and Rachel McAdams outstanding performance is one of the greatest creations I have ever seen in my life. Will Ferrell also gave us a brilliant characterization. This film begins as comedy but then turns into a very emotional masterpiece.
I really wanted to see this video! As a someone who studied linguistics, I could hear a different sound from the one they were acting and made me want to see the singer in action
I can't stop listening this song over and over . SUPERB performance ... I didn't know Molly Sanden exists .... I will listen all of her songs now ... This song is absolutely outstanding
Soooo proud to be Icelandic right now and I'm not even Icelandic.......or live in Iceland......or even been to Iceland, but I know a guy who knows a guy who knows an elf that is.
One possible reason - they didn't take it seriously, because the film was mainly a comedy (which is to say they didn't really pay attention to it, including how much it added to the film, even re-directed and enriched the plot). Along with that, there are many who like to affirm a particular political message they like, and the song that won gave them the chance to do so... On the other hand, Lars may have given us the answer: 'Sometimes the best song is not the winning song, but a song that comes from the heart.'
When I saw the movie on Netflix, I fell in love with this song. I immediately downloaded it to my phone, and listen to it every day now. It's a great song. Thanks Molly Sanden.
Just saw this movie and " Hometown" OMG that song! In a sea of darkness, a huge light shines bright!!! Thank you Molly, and "The Oscar goes to"!!!! I shed a tear everytime. Beautiful song!
I absolutely love this song! I do want to put some conflicting stories to rest. I’ve watched all the behind the scenes and interviews because I needed to know more. Molly is lead vocals, however Rachel did do the leg work, took intense vocal lessons, and actually sang. They layered their voices together. Rachel confirmed this while praising Molly. Rachel deserves a lot of credit on the other side though, that is really Eurovision they filmed this in front of. Will confirmed they couldn’t just rent an arena and pay 9,000 extras. Rachel stood on the real stage, in front of the actual audience, and performed this. Together they’ve put together quite possibly one of the most beautiful moments in cinema. 💖
No that’s incorrect! Rachel is only lip syncing on this song (witch is very difficult to right, all creed to Rachel). Her voice is not layered with Mollys. That is incorrect according to my sources , is not difficult to get the correct information if you don’t listen to one of the producers (who’s intrest isn’t to bring forth a “behind the scene” singer from Sweden but put the spotlight on one of the stars of the movie). To compare Rachels voice to Molly, is like comparing a Toyota to a Ferrari (Toyota makes good cars though, but Ferrari makes GREAT cars). Come on, do you really believe the producer just because he says something. Be a bit more critical. Why do all the work when all you need to do is to let Molly do all the singing and Rachel lip syncing. Go to Spotify and listen to her voice and songs, really good, but in Swedish. All the best... 🥳
Jan-Olof Morath The producer who wrote, and produced Husavik said this. “According to Netflix, Sandén’s vocals were mixed with McAdams’s own voice for the tracks. In a separate phone call with Vanity Fair, Eurovision’s music producer Kotecha said that Sandén and McAdams’s “tones worked so well together” that, in playing back certain tracks, he had a hard time differentiating between the vocals.”
@Shandi Lenaburg I do too! Also, you have great ears, it absolutely is different in the movie, because they recorded the real audience. Absolutely phenomenal movie!

@johnny ember depends who you ask. As a foreigner in Iceland, I thought she was native, because her Icelandic is better than mine, but my partner is native and he said that the Icelandic parts spoiled the whole song for him, because they are really rough sounding and stood out to him in a bad way.

This song is legit more eurovision than anything performed at the Eurovision song contest in the last 20 years.

For everyone curious about the line “where the whales can live cause they’re gentle people”
Husavik is a well-known and popular area for whale watching!! She’s not just talking about some random ass whales. They’re really a part of her hometown! Sigrit
I don't think anyone's wondering. Two giant whales jump out the water and do a little spin early in the movie. Lololol
Iceland and Japan really loves Whales. Loves to hit them with harpoons I mean.
@@DanHammarstrom And America loves kids. Loves to treat the bullet wounds with very high priced doctors I mean.
Y 20 X I mean, there are lots of people commenting about it. Just thought I’d give that little bit of info. I don’t think people know that Husavik is a whale-watching town based off of the whales jumping but maybe I’m wrong :D
Dan Hammarström whaling and whale-watching unfortunately exist in the same places, yes. :(

Molly Sandén is such a great singer and I’m so happy she finally gets some recognition outside of Scandinavia!
She has done English songs in the past but her Swedish ones is the best. You should look her up, if you like “Husavik “ you will definitely love “Rosa himmel”.
Trust me
Hello how are you Mixtra
Nah. The english ones are way better.
I also like her Swedish songs very much. But maybe it helps that I'm actually Swedish myself. 🙂
Rosa himmel är så fin... jag sjunger ofta till den, har en historia kring den också.
You're right but I love all the songs which I guess you do too. Is it just me who feels that I'm kind of Molly Sandén's fan number one LOVES HER SO FUCKING MUCH !!
"Where the mountains sing. Through the screams of seagulls." Is honestly one of the strongest lines I've heard in awhile.
Why has everyone heard of Adele? But hardly anyone heard of Molly Sanden? What a powerful, amazing, overpowering voice, rich with melody and feel
Adele probably fucked the right producers on her way up xD
I far prefer her voice to Adele’s, who has a distinct English pub singer tone that she can’t get away from, no matter how classy shy tries to make herself!

The line "Where the whales can live 'cause they're gentle people" gets me every time. Congratulations to the Icelandic people for developing a beautiful country!
Except for last 2 years Iceland has killed more than 1500 whales since 2003 .. hopefully tourism will bring more good than killing them. Now Norway is the main “killer” along with Japan.
TeooeT they’re not ruthlessly destroying them though. It’s like hunting here in the states, you’ve got to manage your resources.
@@anastasme I think that's exactly why they included that lyric. She's singing about Husavik specifically, where they do protect and allow whales to live. And there in particular, a highlight is whale watching, instead of hunting. Even the biggest whale museum in the world is in that town.
Are whales really gentle people?
@@psammiad well you can think of it in two ways. The simpler explanation is bad sentence structure. "They" refers to the Húsavík townsfolk, not the whales. Whales in their town can live cause they aren't hunted by the gentle townsfolk there (perhaps unlike in other parts of Iceland). Think of it written instead as:
Where the whales can live---- cause they're gentle people in my hometown (Húsavík).
I speak it all the time and I'm not even good at it
Also her voice is soooo beautiful!!😍

I have never heard a song that has struck me as if I had lost my own parent. A real spear to the soul. I can only imagine how the songwriter felt.
To the writer, producers, director, cast & crew, composers, writers & performers of the original songs, and specifically Will & Rachel, I want to take this moment to say "thank you". From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU. Thank you for producing the funniest, most heartfelt comedy of the year.

This song should have won the Oscar today! What were they thinking ??
One possible reason - they didn't take it seriously, because the film was mainly a comedy (which is to say they didn't really pay attention to it, including how much it added to the film, even re-directed and enriched the plot). Along with that, there are many who like to affirm a particular political message they like, and the song that won gave them the chance to do so...
On the other hand, Lars may have given us the answer:
'Sometimes the best song is not the winning song, but a song that comes from the heart.'

such a powerfull voice. holy shit.
When I first heard this song it blew me away and I've heard everything. Molly's voice is a gift from the Elves !
Jan-Olof Morath
The producer who wrote, and produced Husavik said this.
