Strangely enough, the mistakes Oda made early on with the Kamabaka Kingdom, actually make me appreciate him more, because he has educated himself and changed and that's more than a lot of people are willing to do.
that last part about getting into one piece before you realize you’re queer is so true, for example i binged the op manga because my then friend/crush liked it (it was right around when dressrosa was ending in the manga), and now years later i’m gayer than ever getting my girlfriend into one piece, she’s starting the arabasta saga now
Ah yes the anime where there's a literal revolutionary army taking on a world government, and the revolutionary army is largely made up of LGBT people, is toootttallly not political or giving us lgbt representation. *copes as hard as possible while making angry reactionary noises*
Bon-chan's the Goat, and Iva is a saint I'd like to visit.... but Mmm, ngl, Sanji is ah... either a bit of a problematic fella, or egg-in-denial, I can't say for sure. Only recently saw some good fan-art for her. *Edit:* Also, re; Yamato, ffs, he himself says that he's a man, and bathed in the guys' section, right alongside a shot of Kiku and O-Toko bathing with the girls, how much harder does this need to be said?
I think Coby is a perfect example of casting a trans person, who plays the character how they should be portrayed. I think most of the time there is backlash to a trans actor/character is that they put that up front for their personality. All live action anime adaptations need to follow the playbook "one piece" has.
@@thegreedyone8551 the point being you don't know if he's gay or straight whatever. Cause it doesn't matter in the world of one piece. If they changed him to be identity 1st, than that's an issue. Imagine being a fan of One Piece and homo/transphobic. How can you not vibe with Iva and Bon Chan. But here's my take as a gay person watching one piece. Oda's portrayal of queer people in Kamabakka is a bit questionable tbh, but I would like to think that he's just testing the waters back then (like Impel Down Arc in 2009 when things aren't as open as now). He realized that people received Ivankov, Bon Clay, and Inazuma quite good so he then improved the portrayal and that's why we get Izo, Morley, Kiku, and Yamato. Honestly, I love Oda for representing the LGBT community, esp as part of the revolutionaries, because ever since, queer people suffered from discrimination, hatred, and violence -- and it's just right for them to dismantle the system and fight for equality for all.
In all honesty I doubt there is such a thing as a homo- or transphobic one piece fan. Everone I've ever seen that has been accused of such were merely sick of characters being hi-jacked into certain orientations when they're not (like Yamato). I mean, 100% of the fanbase *loooooves* Bon chan.
Yamato is a strange case, she idolises Oden and wants to become him. not a man, Oden. Which i think goes against the shows very principles if it was more serious than just idolisation. Yamato at most flip flops between a girl and Oden. I say flip flop because there are many characters who refer to her as she and even during official merchandising and vivre cards Yamato is referred to as She
Yamato is a case of parental issues and overblown idolization, not a gender thing. I really hate when people attempt to project bs into characters when there is great representation to be found elsewhere within the same series.
I remember when I first got to impel down there was this impulse reaction to see the Newkama as negative stereotypes. Big burly men with body hair wearing dresses or fishnets etc. But then after watching further and seeing what oda was doing with it it sort of strayed into "oh ok his heart is kind of in the right place I guess? He might be calling trans people weird freaks but he's also saying that there's nothing wrong with being a weird freak I guess" but then after years of rereading it and growing older and then especially after reading Wano weekly and meeting Kiku, a fully respectfully presenting trans woman, and Yamato, a trans man pre top surgery, I went back to impel down and reevaluated and realised that while the understanding might not have been nearly as mainstream at the time it was written which definitely caused its portrayal to suffer I think this whole time the Newkama were never meant to all be straight up trans women, they were always mean to be generally gender nonconforming people. They weren't being drawn with body hair to highlight the ways they don't pass, they were being drawn that way because they're NOT trying to pass. One piece is a story about freedom and what's more free about doing whatever the hell you want with your body. Who cares if she has a beard and leg hair Morley is a woman because she is a woman, ivankov can change genders whenever they please and Bon Clay can change his entire body that's true liberation.
The best example of the first few arcs having acceptance is Drum Island where luffy basically says "hey chopper idc if you look like a monster, you're cool and a chill guy, come and join"
Yamato is a girl, but she wishes she could be like Kouzuki Oden, which she is not. She is neither trans nor gay! That's just the interpretation of some people who are far removed from reality!
