I love this video! Back in the late 80s early 90s I rebuilt the 283 in my 57 belair. Double hump heads with stainless valves and flat top pistons. Probably only 9:1 compression but with the old Cam Dynamics 230/495 cam and a th350 and a 4500 converter it was good for 12.90s with a 3.73 axle. Was a blast to drive. Love this!

Double hump heads with the 1:96 intake valves because the 2:02 were too big for the cylinders , but they had 58cc chambers , those little 283 blocks will scream to the moon ,
I got 3 of them only mine has 11 inch clutch , Lakewood Blow Proof bell housing and M-21 Muncie 4 speed trans behind them .

@@jimthomas1989. Actually, 2.02" valves clear the 283 bore just fine. There is a bit of "bore shrouding" (flow) but it isn't real bad. A 2.02" valve will hit the SIDE of a .030" over 283 cylinder
at about .740" lift, so no worries short of that!

      Ricky Huff ,
      I got 3 of these 283 blocks ,
      The small block 302 is a 327 block and a 283 crank
      The small block 307 is a 283 block and a 327 crank
And to build a 283 takes hi compression forged pistons at Least 12:1 ,
      Double hump heads ,
      Aluminum hi rise intake ,
Big carb of 750cfm or bigger ,
Headers ,HEI distributor , and a radical cam shaft , not too hi on lift but very wide on duration ,
This should get you from 325 to 375hp
And should crank to about 11 or 12,000rpm

My first car at age 19, 66 Chevelle, paid $350 very little rust rear quarters behind the back wheels, 283 3 speed manual, Malibu, from red light to red light oh man. The previous guy converted it from column to the floor, I put in some 69 Camaro bucket seats. Can't find it today have to pay 100 percent more. Sat in the passenger seat, watched my brother wreck it, put it back together, sold it, and went in the Army, worst and best thing I ever have done. 283's and 327's were impressive, these kids of today have no idea and will never know.

@@yamahaguy1732 Not really...but people do say that. Back in the day, people put some doggish 283s in heavy vehicles with high gears and crummy transmissions, and then blamed it on the engine. You can get the same cackle & response out of a 283 the same as a 426. It's just math, and people aren't good at math. A v8 is a v8, of course displacement varies. But displacement is just that...displacement.
With the right cam, heads, porting, gears, and weight, etc, etc, you can make a 283 as snappy as a 383, 483 or 183ci v8. That being said, it doesn't mean it will be as powerful or as fast as a 426, that's not what I'm saying...
After that, it's all about weight and aerodynamics..and of course the driver.

Dont buy those cams they blow the intake charge right out the exhaust valve
There are tons of good grinds for the 283 that make power and sound good.
Contact Crower or Isky, still some old timers there that know whats best for ya

@@gordocarbo Yep, those cams sound good but bleed off to much cylinder. I did see an episode on engine masters where they used a thumper cam and it actually made good power, you just had to have it in the high rpm range. Down low it's a slug

Cut my teeth on SBC. Balance the rotating assy carefully and wind 'em tight. 10 grand is not impossible. Make the torque with a lower rear and trans gear ratio. Oh, and nothing sounds sweeter than a high revving sbc. Cheers!

Better believe it! These little motors come stock with a forged steel crank, and at only a 3" stroke, you can wind them past 7000rpm no problem! I have a '65 el camino with a mildly healthy 283 in it. Check it out on my UA-cam channel if you like. A few video's there

and those forged cranks were Tufftrided- they just wouldn't wear; rods were also forged.
