    The problem is that most DEI opponents don’t offer other solutions. They don’t talk about perhaps providing greater funding to underfunded school systems, which are disproportionately communities of color. They don’t talk about greater outreach to minority groups. All they talk about is just ending DEI.
    It’s not the means through which DEI operates (a strawman argument on their part BTW), it’s the end goals.

    A lot of folks will cite Justice Brown-Jackson as an example of a so-called DEI hire. But this ignores the fact that the prior administration had its own criteria that resulted in the exclusion of the "most qualified" candidates. Specifically, ideological tests, which exclude even highly candidates whose ideologies don't "measure up". Additionally, they also went for the youngest candidates possible (to maximize time in position and thereby impact) which excludes older candidates who would have more experience.

      This is why qualification is such a touchy subject. The right wing generally wants only paper qualifications considered because that would heavily favor their perferred demographics. Any decent hiring manager knows that how well a candidate will fit on a team or within the company culture is nearly as important as paper qualification, especially when all of your prospective candidates meet the basic qualifications for the position.

      It's simple. Employers should be able to hire whomever they want. If that means Asians are overrepresented in certain fields, so be it. We don't call for DEI in the NBA. Just because two people hold the same college degree or job title does not mean there will be equal outcomes.

  • @live2groove
    @live2groove 15 днів тому +2

    First off, to David's point. When hiring, you don't simply "hire the most qualified person" First you decide the qualifications needed, then you interview only people with these qualifications then you hire the person best fit for the job. Simple example: You might have someone with more experience than the others, but if they have a 2-hour commute, you might not want to hire them if you're afraid that they may not stick around. Also, the most qualified is not as obvious as people like to think. It's not as easy as say, hiring the most tallest person. "The most qualified" can be and often is, subjective. However, DEI actually can result in the most qualified people getting hired. In the case of KBJ, because Biden wanted to nominate a black woman, she was so scrutinized, so he got nominated someone who is more qualified than anyone else on the USSC (or at least she's more qualified than Trump's three picks). When white people are forced to hire minorities, they end holding them to higher standards than they would white people, so contrary to the common criticism of "why not just hire the most qualified person", DEI has actually proven to do just that..

      @Lethgar_Smith 14 днів тому +2

      Yes, because being a "moderate" in America means you're just a tiny bit racist.
      What I see as the main criticism of DEI is that it makes people, who still have some little racists thoughts they keep tucked away in the corners of their mind, feel guilty and ashamed and they resent that. They still feel that they should be allowed to keep just a few racist thoughts and not be made to feel guilty about that.
      The irony, of course, is that no one can make you feel guilty. That feeling comes from within and if you blame it on others it's because you are in denial.
      Little racist thoughts such as, "equality of outcome". When you hear or see that phrase raised as a fear or concern, it is almost always coming from someone who still has a few racist ideas they are clinging to like an old teddy bear and they are scared of letting it go.
      "Any poor, browned skin person who achieves more than me must have had unfair help and assistance"
      is probably the most common racist thought in America.

    • @octavianpopescu4776
      @octavianpopescu4776 16 днів тому +4

      No, that's not the same. Yes, there is a small minority that does want to abolish the police. However, "defund" is different. Their whole point is redirecting finance away from police towards other public services, dealing with mental health and other things like that. This would also imply the police not having to deal with things like mental health emergencies and having specialised people deal with them. As things stand, in the US, it seems that police officers are also part-time psychiatrists, part-time social workers, on top of the crime fighting and prevention duties. The defund group thinks the police should only focus on fighting and preventing crime and the duties and finances related to social work should be done by other departments/agencies/etc. So from the point of view of the public, the same services would still exist, except that in case someone has some mental health crisis, a specialized social worker would show up instead of an armed police officer with limited training. Supporters of defund believe that a lot of incidents/shootings could be prevented IF specialists were to defuse the situation, instead of armed officers who, by the mere fact that they're armed, raise the tensions.

      I disagree , I’m a comic book nerd, I grew up as an outcast, I grew up watching Star Trek and believing all people are equal . I can’t tell you how often I see people post ‘ middle aged white men ‘ and I’m a middle aged white guy , and the way they put all of us into one group and tell me I’m all these bad things , honestly it feels wrong . The way you do something matters , and I can say from my hobbies some of the things I’m seeing don’t seem like they are coming from a god place . Honestly today a lot of what I see is having the exact opposite effect , instead of bringing people together and opening their heart and mind , it’s dividing people , and closeting their mind with behavior that is not fitting of people claiming to desire positive change . You can;t heal the world by throwing fire and burning it all down . I’m voting for Joe Biden , Trump is an insane man child . Honestly lately I feel like us people I. The middle ares stuck between two extreme factions of left and right , and while,I personally think the right is more dangerous , I’ve been super disappointed at the far left. Anyway good luck

    "Defund the Police," while an abysmally poor slogan, does not mean what David appears to think it means.
    Its aim is to re-allocate duties from Law Enforcement to Social Work, in order to facilitate the de-escalation of tensions in domestic and psychological situations.
    Armed Law Enforcement tends to exacerbate such situations, whether through their mere uniformed presence or through making wrong judgments and taking wrong actions.

    The moment that DEI started to exist it had already gone too far. Excluding people by "race," sex, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, etc should never be the goal. Seeking to prejudice your hiring, payroll, admittance, or other policies according to hierarchies sorted by "race," sex, sexual orientation, etc. should never be the goal. These things are fundamentally wrong-headed and moving in the opposite direction of progress from the word go. The more you talk about the fallacious and invented concept of "race," the more power you give to it. The more you talk about racism, the more racism you will inspire. Identity politics of any kind will ALWAYS, INEVITABLY, inspire push back and create identity politics of other, oppositional kinds. The ONLY way to move forward to to strive to be color blind, gender blind, etc. The goal OUGHT to be to get to a point where talking about someone's story, experiences, or value as an individual through the lens of what "race" they are, what color they are, or what shaped genitalia they prefer should be as obviously nonsensical as talking about these things through the lens of what color socks that person wears, or whether or not they've got a belly button that is an "innie" or an "outie." Anyone obsessed with these things should be mocked, scorned, excluded from the conversation, or at the very least not taken seriously.

      I doubt white supremacy was formed by "talking about racism", lol.
      It's hard to move out of a system that has been established for over 500 years, and racism has resurgence regardless if it's "spoken about" or not.
      Mexico is a prime example of this, where racial inequalities still exist without it being spoken about, literally removing racial classifications in 1823.

    The entire concept is nonsense - if you hire on the basis of ethnicity or sex, and not on the basis of competency, this is simply wrong, and the *inevitable* result is that standards will fall. If you treat people as equals, then they will become equals. It may take time but it works. Attempting to force it doesn't work.

    • @tamisha8874
      @tamisha8874 15 днів тому

      Why exactly would standards fall? DEI is not hiring people based on ethnicity or gender, it’s saying we have to add these qualified people to the consideration. It’s about expanding the hiring pool.
      Twisting it to say these people are not qualified is the problem and it’s bigoted.
