I deleted tiktok like a month ago because I have ocd and was constantly getting triggered or put into a bad headspace by it and I genuinely feel better and I feel like I have so much more tolerance for longer form content, or for playing games that have a slower start for example. it was actually difficult at first learning what it's like to not constantly be distracted but it is worth it. i have nothing against apps like this but I hope some people consider not jumping to a clone right away and see how they feel without it.
I never had tiktok but I deleted all of my social media besides UA-cam years ago and it has been a huge positive overall. Keep putting your mental health first!
Same by me. I deleted instagram like 2 1/2 years ago and it's like you getting off a drug or an addiction. (I mean it is likely to get you addicted like the whole mobilphone use)
The fact the government had to put the TikTok ban into a foreign aid package bill because it couldn’t pass as a standalone bill is disgusting. There needs to be a law to prohibit unrelated things being lumped together to pass as a bill. If you ask me, it’s a scummy move.
Same with flavored vapes where I live. It seems like every few months people would say they’re going to ban them and it just never happened until I finally did.
I hate Tik Tok and yet I’m actually sad about this, I’m kinda gonna miss checking in every month or two and seeing what dumb memes and news are popping off there, so long to my Chinese spy, you done good work

It's not a US app. It is not owned by a US private company. So either, we make all apps a completely free space with no censorship of any kind, or we shouldn't have it at all. There is not a better alternative to speech than free speech, if you have one, please, provide it.

As an active duty service member, we’ve had Intel personnel tell us, in an unclassified brief, to delete TikTok if it’s was installed, and never use Temu, as the companies can be made to turn over any user info and data, or be made to use the apps for surveillance per the Chinese Law of 2017.
i'm not part of the military, but this exactly is why i won't install it, and why i've been avoiding even tencent-owned western companies. if an app comes from a country with an oppressive, surveillance-heavy regime, it will 100% be used as a surveillance tool, and possibly even a manipulation/propaganda tool. avoiding meta, x, and snap is a matter of privacy. avoiding tiktok, vk, and telegram is a matter of security.
It seems to be easier for them to brainwash people they’ve got in the system. Maybe don’t believe everything your higher ups are telling you, TikTok is a Singaporean company.
I mean i wouldnt post shit about my military service or my employment as a federal employee on my personal device Well that is if you knew much of the IT side of things. actually data is just a red herring. US intelligence just wants to be able to install a backdoor to spy on us without warrants but also zuck wants his competition gone
There already is. Almost every popular social media site has their own form of short form content. The reality is though that we live in a democracy and if most people really cared about who has access to our data politicians would be doing something about it.
It’s a different app but it’s the same. It’s called douyin but essentially it’s Chinese TikTok lol if you look it up you’ll see it’s the same as TikTok but in mandarin
Interesting points! I do disagree on your argument that freedom of speech should protect TikTok, but I think there are better arguments for its banning. Banning TikTok for the protection of national security is perhaps the most milquetoast reason and one which, I think, holds little water. Banning TikTok due to privacy concerns does seem like a reasonable suggestion, as long as you agree that all social media apps should be restricted in their access to users private information. In a utopian world, I think that all of social media would be held to a publisher v. platform standard. As a platform, all users would be allowed to say whatever they would like and TikTok could still be banned for censorship.
Banning tiktok but not meta after cambridge analytica isn't consistent. The government isn't trying to help you, just themselves. I don't think you should support them achieving that.
The intelligence value of Tiktok operating in the US is extremely compelling. Not only can Tiktok introduce and shape narratives, if they so desired, they also would have a confirmable near-live feed of troop movements, valuable target locations, BDA, and specific personal information (the schedules, personalities/preferences, and locations of potential "targets"). And that's probably not even close to all of the, imo very legitimate, concerns. The current climate in the Pacific isn't very friendly. Maybe 10-20 years ago there wouldn't be much to worry about, but China is quickly directing themselves (rhetorically and materially) in what can only be interpreted as preparations for amphibious assault.
@@clankclankimatank Lmao, Troop movements? What kind of soldier is bringing tiktok out on to the battlefield when they're literally not allowed to have it installed? Also, you do realize that, most your points STILL hold true for other platforms, as nothings stopping China from stripping all the stuff being uploaded to American social media platforms to collect intel. American social media is already shaping narratives, removing any content that speaks about the horrors in Gaza. Why should tiktok be banned for these theoretical issues when American social media has been actively seen doing these things?
A website shouldn't be banned for "censorship." Literally every single time a platform doesn't moderate content, it turns into an alt-right cesspool. Every. Time. Not allowing websites to disallow that is pretty much saying no one is allowed to have a place free from that.
The only way I would support a TikTok ban is if the US imposed much much stricter privacy information laws across the entire US. Then at least they would be breaking the law. Otherwise this TIkTok ban is just another result of a racist government
TikTok isn't only responsible for careers and the damage to attention spans, but people fleeing dire situations use the app to reach out for help and mutual aid efforts like Operation Olive Branch organized on there. It's gonna be a huge blow
At the end of the day, it's just social media. Plenty of ups and downs. Sure, China's government could manipulate narratives, but the U.S. has already been doing that with their own media for a minimum of decades. But as long as it's home grown propaganda, well that's just being a "proud" American, right?
@@henrytep8884 alright henry it's an entertainment app that's it. the ban isn't going to change anything. they're just gonna find a new app to post that shit on. banning tiktok just gonna make people angry, also reminder that people actually made lots of money from tiktok.

Mr beast won't save it even if he has billionaires behind him. Elon musk would be better, he owns X and does a good job at it. I would like tiktok shut down for the whole world in my opinion.
Very glad I never downloaded and got into TikTok. Sure, I use Instagram and UA-cam but that's about it and I don't allow it to consume and rot my brain.
I really hope they don't ban it, i never had the app ever, but i know this will be a slippery slope, allowing the government to tell people what they can and can't be on.
The site is stealing and giving data to China so that’s the reason why. It’s not just censorship and telling people what they can and cannot do and be on.
nah man this is important. you realize an app literally run by a foreign nation can send any disinformation they could possibly desire? and if you ask "why would they even want to do that," just think about the advantage another country would have by feeding our people lies. turning us further against each other, and preying on the people who do not do further research by convincing them of nonsense. how is that not a bad thing?
Exactly. It will pave the way for America to become a giant echo-chamber, just like China. In fact, over the past 10 years, most new American laws were AGAINST freedom. Makes you think where this is headed.
At this point they consider it to be national security threat. So that's when you have to think - is it really that or is it that they just want to capitalize and keep the data for themselves? It more than likely truly is a threat. Tik Tok is a gold mine for data. There's millions of daily users, it's a social media platform, and there is a huge young demographic. A government like China could at any moment could demand the company to give them the data, then use it as a tool to spread misinformation and weaken rapport in the US. Data is becoming a new weapon, it's very valuable right now. The US uses data primarily to capitalize and make you buy shit, a foreign adversary would do much worse.
Take it from a senior prgrammer, people don't realize the reason they took it off for a day or two was so they can mess with the code however they deem fit. Obviously they'd argue they're getting rid of all the Chinese spy/malware but in reality they're taking control over it slowly trust me. There's always more to what meets the eye and it's never as simple as it first appears.
Allegedly just running android or accessing anything alphabet related is setting up digital fingerprinting that you can't opt of out I think this month? It's that the same data isn't available to be mined through TT that is why folks want it gone.
there’s not gonna be a “recommended page” as seasoned as tik toks even when they were listening to what i was talking about seeing a tik tok about it still got me excited
important to note that one of the main concerns about the app, is national security which is a legitimate concern in the current climate. i have a friend who’s dad worked for a long time as a colonel for the air force, and his operation was essentially national security. i remember him telling me that nobody in his family was allowed (instructed by top brass in the military) to download tik tok because there was evidence to suggest it contained spyware that could pull information from his dads phone and computer by being on the same wifi and family phone plan
I hate to tell ya, the government has had the greenlight to do this for a long time, it's well established law and has been confirmed to pass all the relevant constitutional tests multiple times throughout history. When it comes to foreign businesses operating inside the US the feds have final say on whether they can operate and can shutter them at any time for numerous reasons regardless of how popular they are.
Damnit Charlie, immediately after watching this my YT has been flooded with redone ads. I'd never even seen or heard this app before, and now it's everywhere
I support the ban, but I'm also worried about how the government is going to treat this kind of stuff from now on. I feel like they can just claim that any app from a foreign country is "spyware" and shut it down. I can see this going very badly in the future.
TikTok is the only major social platform not essentially controlled by the trump admin. Facebook, Twitter, Twitch and Even Google/UA-cam to some extent can be censored but not TikTok. This is a way bigger deal than most people are realizing I think.
People are looking at Redbook as a alternative and realize they need to walk on eggshells since it requires people to follow Chinese laws. Otherwise its a perma ban.
Ehhh it’s not that bad. Everyone was saying it would ban LGBTQ content, and then everyone quickly realized that’s a lie and it’s very common on the app. Meta apps restricted talking about Palestine, and twitter flags you if you say cis. So id say they’re all pretty bad in terms of censorship
2:56 As someone who doesn’t use TikTok anymore, I’ve generally been viewing the ban positively because I think the app has had a negative impact on people’s mental health and general well-being. But, now that you say it- I really don’t think it’s the government’s business to ban the app. I feel like they’re overstepping their power a bit too much and if they successfully ban TikTok, it could set a very dangerous precedent
@@KyubiCloaks yea people tie tiktok to all the bad things happening regarding attention spans etc. if tiktok does get banned, people just gonna move to another app lol. the point of the ban is NOT to save people, because social media overall is responsible. they'd have to ban literally every app.

UPDATE: THE BAN’S BEEN ENACTED
Who’s here after TikTok is now gone

But as long as it's home grown propaganda, well that's just being a "proud" American, right?

This!!! A lot of ppl keep saying they're glad, but this is very much smth that shouldn't be celebrated.
Obviously they'd argue they're getting rid of all the Chinese spy/malware but in reality they're taking control over it slowly trust me. there’s not gonna be a “recommended page” as seasoned as tik toks even when they were listening to what i was talking about seeing a tik tok about it still got me excited
important to note that one of the main concerns about the app, is national security which is a legitimate concern in the current climate. i have a friend who’s dad worked for a long time as a colonel for the air force, and his operation was essentially national security. i remember him telling me that nobody in his family was allowed (instructed by top brass in the military) to download tik tok because there was evidence to suggest it contained spyware that could pull information from his dads phone and computer by being on the same wifi and family phone plan
I've seen someone mention this but Temu provides the same threat too no?
This is propaganda, and even i knew this as someone was in the Army when they were telling us not to download it.
"Trust me bro!"
I hate to tell ya, the government has had the greenlight to do this for a long time, it's well established law and has been confirmed to pass all the relevant constitutional tests multiple times throughout history.
