Anthrax 1988 Headbangers Ball

- Includes a tour of NYC, and takes you into the studio where Anthrax were writing and rehearsing tracks for the upcoming album State Of Euphoria. Quality is a little low at times as this tape was very old, but it is a rare Anthrax classic I thought many would love to see. The quality is good enough for most of it and the audio is solid for all of it. I spent a lot of time making sure the tape played back as well as possible, and getting the audio back in sync.
I love listening to this classic era Anthrax talk about the gear they used. Scott is using a very sweet Marshall Jubilee head... I have the 50 watt version and its killer.
I can't find this on youtube and I love it so I want other Anthrax fans to be able to enjoy it as well. It is nearly complete as the opening segment is unfortunately missing I think. This video contains just the segments Anthrax were in, and all the videos are cut out. Also, I did find 1 small part of this in a little higher quality on youtube from an mtv "flashback" moment, but it is only about a minute and this is almost 10 minutes long.
Enjoy
Anthrax in the 80s was one fun band that you either hated or loved. Thrash hardcore crossover, comic books, skateboarding, what more can you not love?
never seen anyone skateboard to Anthrax BUT yeah they are a cool Band been a fan since 1987
recently did a Video Review about ANTHRAX. I remember watching this on THBB
'hey welcome back to headbanguhs bawul"
Layne... 😥😭
what a fun lovin' bunch. They were the laid back comedians of the thrash era.
Couple O'wize guyz Ey?
I miss being a teenager. Staying up on Saturday night watching Headbangers Ball. The good ol' days.
I do too brother.
and if i didnt watch it i rec it to vhs tape n watched it the next morning, fast fwd thru the commercials
im married and did the same thing after 33 yrs ,nothing changed only that i got martied and had Kids and my pets, but i played also guitar as these days, wears the same exactly same clothes i started to have first in 1988 and had exactly the same Hair and shoes, lol ,People call me the Trash Peter Pan 🤣🤘
It's bananas how quick Scott's hair started falling out two years later. Probably from all the stress of his second marrige & the band getting screwed over and over
So sad, he used to have hair..
Or just genetics. He is pretty hairy.
Or, you know, just aging/genetics?
Also testosterone
It happens to most men at a certain age , Scott just choose to not look ridiculous balding ( as did Kerry King ) and shaved it off before.
He looks better with the shaved head anyway
these guys did have the best hair of all 80s bands
the 80s for you
James Rockford so did overkill and flotsam and jetsam
So did Death Angel
James hetfield 88 was really cool
Anthrax is so underrated among the big four
Totally overrated.
They don't even belong there.
@@plciferpffer3048 disagree, they actually do something different from the big four
@@C4Ske Matter of opinion.
Testament have much better albums imo.
Also Exodus.
But hey, I respect your opinion ofc.
@@plciferpffer3048 I love those bands but IMO they don’t fit the 4th spot, same here I respect your take
@@plciferpffer3048wrong
This was time of REAL music!!!!
"Here's a KISS video, it's Heaven's On Foiyah"
Their Noo Yawk accents are too adorable.
i wish i was a teen in the 80s
I like how they all talk at the same time. Lol
they really do sound like new yorkers
they are New Yorkers ...lol From the Bronx and Queens.
joey and dan are from upstate
i live in queens
They should've had a cameo in Avengers
Dan Spitz laughs a lot when joey and frank talks about their equipments
It seems he was really close with those two guys back then, especially Joey.
@@mikemars2112 Agree they seem to have great chemistry at this point
Danny is so cute🥰🥺🤘🏻
@@EddieMaiden666 Danny is really the cutest
@@BigboiiTone Sad to hear Joey talks about how he doesn't really feel like other bandmates consider him as their friend.
That was Sick! I love the whole New York way about them. I miss Dan Spitz. Get him back!
I remember seeing this just like it was yesterday, I was 14 years old at the time.
Me too I was born in 74. Your name sounds familiar. My name real name is Bryan Bruce from Gulf Breeze Florida just in case.
@@BB-vq6cb no bro i don’t know you I’m from Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Those were the days... When Benante looked like Jay Leno and Scott had hair.
Oh Man, Their accents kill me...Heavens on Fiaa
Oh man, this channel was gold back then. After all these years I still can’t believe the way they completely change.
I wish i was around then to hang out with Anthrax lol.
Also they have the coolest style in thrash metal.
Especially on Stage. Her Stage Show in particular is unique. I saw them in Bochum D in 1988. Unforgettable. I even still have the Photos
Frank's bass is awesome, and he has one of the coolest bass tones.
They are so cute...
I remember when this was first on Headbanger's Ball. Damn, I am old.
I find Joey's speaking voice very soothing 😌
He just sounds adorable💜
Not! Not! Not, not, not! (Hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee)! These guys were a load of fun to be around, compared to other bands.
I love how Joey cracks up Frankie and Danny
they’re so wholesome😌
Except for Joey Belladonna. He partied, while the others didn't. At least, that's what one of the band members said. It may have been Scott Ian that said that. It was from VH-1: Behind The Music, when they covered the history of Anthrax.
It's amazing how different the vibes are between the big 4 metal bands. Anthrax is laid back and having fun, Slayer seems to be coming apart due to long simmering arguments and of course, death. Megadeth is pure business, where Mustaine treats his bandmates with the degree of respect a fry cook at McDonalds receives, and Metallica finally seems to be settling down, after their top 2 douchewagon egomaniacs finally seem to have their egos a little more in control(well, at least James does).
Megadeth has been in a great place the last several years. It WAS like that. But that was even back in the 80's. Dave's gotten a lot better over the years.
Loll
I, for the life of me, simply cannot comprehend how James and Lars have managed to put up with each other for nearly 40 years now! It's amazing!
@@ronaldshank7589 well being worth hundred of millions will do that for you
@@ryanlogan35 ...almost sounds like a "friendship" based on money. There have been plenty of times that these two have fought each other, verbally and physically. Lars seemingly indicated that the only times James seemed to be a "friend" was when James was drunk, at least early in in their careers and personal lives. Things seem to have changed over the years, though. I wouldn't be surprised if there's still a like/hate relationship between the two.
That March of the SOD , that inro .. BEST intro on Headbanger ball, EVER
Funnily enough, Scott Ian was in both Anthrax and SOD.
@@FiveInchTaint Charlie too. And Billy Milano (Vocalist of SOD) was a roadie for Anthrax in the early years.
Was surprised to see Joey wearing a Rush sweater.. Nice!
Ah,the days of VHS,quality
Yeah!😆🤣😆! Where the video could be reasonably clear one second, and all squiggly and messed up the next!
This brings back so many memories for me. I recorded this entire host session when it first aired. I lost the VHS tape in 2000 and I was so upset especially since my tape then didn't have so many skip lines like this one. I would have loved to shared it. My favorite moment is still when Scott and Charlie give the MOSH lesson with the Imitation of Life riff. The guys are still a load of fun. I saw them last month and unfortuanately the set was too short due to the fact that they were unbelievably an opening act. WTF??? ANTHRAX....HEADLINE PLEASE!!!
An opening act?!? Seriously? These guys are LEGENDS! They shouldn't be treated with such disrespect. That's totally unfair, and very uncool!
I clicked on this cause that camo mesh on the marshall cab is something i need in my life.
Grooving on the "Hold Your Fire" ERA shirt Joey has.
I know right? coolness!!!
I miss VHS so much
"These are my Marshall speakers that have speakers in them." haha
"Marshal speaker cabinets..with speakers in them" Hahaha! He's got a way with words
It's like he forgot what to say for a split-second, then came up with whatever first popped into his mind. Oh, well...none of us humans are perfect.
I miss Headbangers Ball.
Me too brother.
That ninja turtles jackson is the shit
Dan Spitz was the shit. I really hope he gets to play on another album with Joey someday.
@@mikemars2112 Still hoping to see Dan back
Thanks for posting ! Stuff like this needs to be on UA-cam so it gets preserved. Takes me wayyyyyyy back.
Always loved the TMNT and Judge Dredd guitars! The "Not Man" was great, too. I really miss that era of Anthrax!
are they wearing the same shoes? that's so metal
best time to grow up, what great memories i have... and they were always funny (maybe because of their ny-italian-jewish roots...) frank looks same now, charlie even younger...
I really appreciate Anthrax, they are good guys .. they are so appreciative about life and music and creativity.
And they over time so humble and really funny, tong and cheek , They keep it mostly family friendly too hich I love too..
i forgot how fluffy their was...layers, fringes, the whole deal.
I remember this episode like it was yesterday ❤️❤️❤️
Well that was nice. A blast from the past. Love those guys.... Greetings from Holland.
JOEY ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️☝️
Those Def Jam jackets are freeeesh
A Marshall Silver Jubilee for Scott or it's a JCM 800 in silver. Mesa/Boogie Mark IV 400 series for Dan(monster tone!). I have a Mesa Dual Rectifier series 2 solo head 2x12 cab. The Rectifiers weren't out then but the Mesa Mark IV has a similar sound. Top of the line gear for these guys then. All classics!
Amazing trip down memory lane Thank you ! ANTHRAX rules, so hard and so fun at the same time
Bello seems more grown up in this video than he does now days hahah, worlds biggest kid!
This statement is still true today XDD
aww they were my favorite as a teenager. Its really cool seeing this again, thank you for posting it!
Gotta LOVE VCRs!
My dads friend lived down the street from one of these guys. Said the “noise” was something he was not into.
They could be extremely loud...or so I'm told...
remember the 80s. awesome band ever!!! from mexico 2013 saludos!!!
love this band...
I remember when this aired, taped it on VHS and watched it all the time. Thanks for posting, brings back memories.
This was so great! Thank you so much for posting it!
Met them a few years back in london ontario..awesome guys..wicked fawkin show!!😜🍻
I love headbangers ball nostalgia, thank you 🙏
For awhile i forgot how great these guys r...
1:44 hahah I love these guys so much
This was really cool, I particularly liked the gear bit. Thanks for sharing.
I remember watching this back then. I have always wanted some of those camo marshall cabs
I like how Scott Ian looked here, he truly rocked that stubble beard combined with the long hair. 🔥🤘
He still is full of energy!!! I saw Anthrax a few months ago and he was all over the place
Very nice, thanks! I also play and have shared some VHS clips and HeadBanger's 20th anniversary special dude!
I remember this episode. It was the first time I was introduced to anthrax. 35 years and 11 concerts and I'm still a die-hard fan. I saw them earlier this year in Houston
Thanks, you got good taste in memorys!!!!
a million thank yous for uploading this! Better a crappy copy than none at all!
I love Anthrax
This is awesome footage. I love the New York accent. I love their music more.
Yes, thank ya for this!
love anthrax!
Hey Scott I saw you In Whitehouse NJ years ago
Most excellent mullets!
Those aren't Mullets
@@heyitsmegoku69420 Scott's hair almost looks like a cross between a mullet, and just being a natural look.
I remember this episode... very vool
good old times....
So badass💪 It's funny when they all start interrupting each other hahah. Anthrax kicks ASS!
Wow they're all buzzing and hyper!
NEW YAAAAWK. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
NINJA TURTLE RAndy RhoADS!! 7:04
the Turtle XTRR is still one of the best guitars ever made!!!!!
i remember watching this live. fuck i am getting old...
Anthrax is so fricking chill and kickass
It's Only Rock n Roll on 8th Street NYC. Memories..
This should be called "Scott Ian and his kids".
😍😍😍 😍😍😍
the old black and white footage, in between commercials was always funny.
I saw them that year open for OZZY on the No Rest For The Wicked LP, first Zakk Wylde shows. Anthrax were great but OZZY had this huge connection with the crowd that was undeniable. I even got into it and I was into punk then & now. Still a good show is a good show!
Ghidrah, from Godzilla fame, shooting his lightning bolts... Friggin CLASSIC and badass just like 80's Headbangers Ball.
Scott with hair :D
I'm not so sure it was a dog Mr. two six packs of malt liquor
Charlie looks the older guy in the band back then, which is contrast to nowadays where he looks the youngest with his short hair.
los 80s como me hubiese gustado vivir alli
Ahhh best era of MTV
*Drum nerd comment coming up*
Charlie's Artstar II kick drums look custom made. They look like 18" which wasn't (as far as I know) a standard production model. They did do a 22" x 18" with the BEM line some years later. I also think it was a custom build because it's got the single lug boxes and not the high tension lugs that all the Artstar II kits had.
That's a thundering riff by S.O.D (Stormtroopers Of Death) tune is March of the S.OD. about a minute into it! :) MTV just looped it for their Head Bangers Ball intro and commercial breaks! The heaviest shit on the planet back in the 80's and in my opinion still is!
HeadBanger's Ball used several SOD riffs... March of the StormTroopers, Milano Mosh, etc...
Scott and Charlie said recently that Charlie played alot of the leads on Fistful and Spreading and not Dan. I don't believe that shit for one minute. Dan is not Yngwie but he can def play his guitar.
Zoe Connor Spitz is brilliant. His solos are impeccable
5 pounds of the dude's body weight are in his balls alone lmfao
For sure. He has a distinctive style, almost a "Middle-Eastern" flair to his note choices. I think they're trying to downplay Dan's legacy, which isn't fair to him or to the band. There was such obvious chemistry between them all in this video, and on the albums.
Not even fair to compare spitz and yngwie. How many of Yngwies solos can you hum note for note? Yngwie gives me a headache after 30 seconds, way to busy with little emphasis on phrasing. Spitz’s guitar playing just like Joeys voice fit the music. It was ANTHRAX, thrash not neoclassical or power metal. Comparing Spitz to Yngwie is almost like comparing Kiss to Frank Zappa. Which one would you rather listen too?
@@waltercortese9946 I've nerver read a comment that explain how Dan's solo is important to the songs as clear as yours. thank you.
Scott Ian an Idol
