The Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.2 S is one of the latest lenses in Nikon's mirrorless Z mount lineup. It's not a small lens - weighing in at 2.4 lbs it is designed with 17 elements in 15 groups. But if you're looking for outstanding image quality, beautiful bokeh and no aberrations or distortion - this is your lens. Much like the 58mm f/0.95 S Noct lens, this is the best of Nikon optical design. But unlike the Noct, its a little bit more manageable, affordable and it has autofocus.

I think it literally has nothing to do with the mount.🤣. It's literally doing what canon and sigma (for sony) has been doing, over designing their lenses at the expense of portability. Amazing lens for sure but quite achievable buy any of the more modern day standards set by the sigma art line .

@@AllCarsUnited it is the mount. Maby peak center sharpness is possible with sigma/canon, but corner sharpness en depth is not. New canon glass is mega sharp but flat and lifeless. Sigma is sharp but not in corners. Nikon is both (even the 50 1.8).

Looking forward to give this lens a try. I've just moved from Fuji to Nikon Z for my professional work. Tried the Z7 next to the A7RIV and the SL2 and though I also loved the IQ of the SL2, there's no Profoto support for that camera (yet). The demo Z7 was a very pleasant surprise and the Z7II is now on order together with some excellent primes. The 50/1.2 is not amongst them, but I fear that will be a matter of time... Thanks for a great review and looking forward to hear your thoughts on the Z7II and the 24-70. IMO the Z-platform receives far less credits than it deserves.

@@jfranco3281 yes, I did. I now have both the f1.8 and the f1.2. Both (in their class) are the best 50s I’ve ever used. I use the f1.8 for personal work because it’s so much more compact and lightweight. The f1.2 I use for professional work. Both are extremely sharp towards corners and edges (centre is almost always sharp with modern lenses). Both are well corrected for both sorts of chromatic abberation. The f1.2 has a more beautiful, soft bokeh and focus transition (as expected) at all apertures and of course wide-open. So far, all Nikkor-Z lenses I’ve tried are superb and the best (or amongst the best) in their class. No regrets whatsoever.

@@airb1976 It appears to me that Nikon has prioritized quality over size/weight/price in general (as evidenced with their 1.8 primes). I wonder if this 50mm will continue that trend. Some initial reviews I've seen have indicated that the Nikkor 50mm 1.2 is better than Canons offering but if that is the case, then to what extent? Personally, if I was dropping 2k+ on a prime I wouldn't care about 100g extra weight or a bit more length... at this price point, you are paying for quality not portability in a prime IMO, that is what the stellar 50mm 1.8 S is for.

  • @benkotowicz174
    @benkotowicz174 3 роки тому +3

Purple fringing comes from the bending of a photon stream. The bending causes inconsistency with other photons (they don't line up and they even clash with adjacent photon streams ). Like a Moiré pattern. The frequency is upset and the frequency does not match the normal line of Photons that reside on the cameras pick-up. You can not get away from purple fringing. It is in every camera that has an electronic pick-up.
It is thought that purple fringing could be greatly reduced by increasing the megapixels. But it would take Billions of MP to do this since MPs are not molecular in size like atoms on on film.
And the other problem in controlling purple fringing is directly related to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. One can not measure the velocity of a photon stream in relation to other photon streams.
Powerful magnets, like on the back of tube TVs would be needed to control the purple fringing. Without computer AI this would be impossible and the camera lens would be about the size of a fifty five gallon oil drum in diameter,
In simple terms, purple fringing is caused by scattered light waves caused by small objects splitting the intense light like a spectrum. If you put a stick into a fast moving stream (photons), the water will split. Turbulence is created (the clash of the streams) and you will get a fringing effect in the water, so to speak.

I've been using the 1.8 since it was first available. About a month ago I picked up the 1.2 and I have no regrets... Size and weight.... about the same as the 24-70 2.8. Optically, it's worth every penny. Even at 1.8 the background blur is more than the 1.8 version is at 1.8. So either the 1.8 is not quite 50mm or the 1.2 is like 52mm. The dual linear focus motors mean I can track fast action easily wide open. 50mm is my favorite FL and this has become my new favorite lens. To anyone "concerned" about weight, don't be. If you can handle a 70-200, you can more than easily handing this 50. Compared to other 50's, yes it's big. Compared to other primo lenses, it's not.

Since i own the Ai-S 50mm f/1.2 I would be interested in 1) how sharpness comapres between f/2 and f/8, 2) how the color rendering compares, 3) how flare resistance compares. I know the Ai-S is ancient and has its weeknesses, but it also has this wonderful dreamy look due to its veiling when shot wide open.

@Brandon Woodard The bodies are smaller but it is a common misconception that "small and light" is the reason for mirrorless, probably because they were mostly micro 4/3 and other small sensor cameras. But light is light and if you want greatness on full-frame the lenses are going to be sizable. The f/1.8 S line is very reasonable and the ergonomics are a lot better than the stubby 1.8 primes of the D and G generation.

Since the reason why lenses have become so big and complex is because they correct for so much and are a better match for higher resolution image sensors, a comparison of Nikon lenses would have to probably address the issue of diminishing returns on investment and any tradeoffs made by having a technically perfect lens over one that has more character. Does anyone with a 24MP Nikon camera need the f/1.2 Z lens if it produces generally indistinguishable images from, say, the f/1.8 Z lens, aside from that extra stop of light? If enthusiasts didn't know which lens was being used, but had an obvious preference for one lens over the other, can we say that making technically perfect lenses is a specs horse race rather than an attempt at making a more versatile tool for creating images?

I use the Fm2 with the Ais 50mm 1.4 as my daily and am always happy with image quality but am always amazed by modern lenses as they are obviously in most cases better by technical standards. Also as far as character goes is the new 1.2 just a clinically perfect lens or does it exhibit anything that really sets it apart from the crowd of fast 50 glass? - not trying to ruffle any feathers, just a man who shoots on film with older glass because of the feel and enjoyment i get from it. A very interesting idea - compare performance of different generations of lenses! Retrospectively this would show your viewership just how far technology has come. Everyone posts this out but nobody actually provides hard information. Don't think I have heard or seen anyone else even mention this idea let alone suggest actually doing it. There are enough examples around that you could do one based on Nikon glass and another based on Canon glass. You could potentially even include some rangefinder samples if you can find clean copies. Given that design constraints with mirrorless are more similar to this with rangefinder designs, this could get very interesting. I will have to follow and see where you take this....

I would love to see side by side test of lenses! One thing that interests me is what happens when a lens like the 50 1.2z with it's high resolving power is out on an apsc sensor. Does it resolve as the same, better, worse? You would have to control for MP count and Pixel Pitch so IDK if that kind of test could be done, but it would be interesting none the less. Oh, and Lens Days is my favorite series, keep it coming Ted!!

About the 50mm f/1.2 AI-s: I love mine, but when I did some testing on it I found out that it's only about a third of a stop faster than a 50mm f/1.4 lens of the same era. (So, kind of like an f/1.8 and an f/2.) The center gets a bit brighter as you open up from f/1.4 to f/1.2, but the edges stay darker. I'd be really curious to see if the newer Z model is a third stop faster than f/1.4 or a half stop faster in terms of light gathering ability. And amazingly, it still retains a lot of detail in the center wide open, it's just hazed over which really hurts it in most situations.
Side note: I really hope that Nikon or someone else comes out with an f/1.2 lens for the Z mount that is somewhere between the old AI-s and the current Z in terms of size and performance. I'd love to have some improvement over the older design while still retaining at least some of its compactness.

The Nikon Z system is about image quality - not light weight. They have light weight options with the camera bodies and f/4 lenses, but the Nikon 1 system was really the one about light weight and small size. You'll see a blend of light weight lenses and bodies, but that's not at the expense of optics.
At some point small and light is good enough. The Z6II and 24-70 f/4 Z lens is a high quality light option. The upcoming pancake lenses are tiny, but give up some optical performance. You can choose what you need. This 50mm f/1.2 is comparable from Canon's mirrorless version.

It is so much more manageable as I'm a landscape photographer and chairman of a photographic society where my membership use every brand whether DSLR or mirrorless. For me in the end I had the opportunity to change and try the system, so here I am now an evf user on the Z system. I cannot believe the weight difference and at a very fit and healthy 51 years old appreciate the mobility this new system allows me. With what will eventually be only three lenses to carry for the full zoom range of f4 lenses once the 100-400 zoom is released. This will take me from the 14-30 to the 24-70 to the 100-400mm. @mpgnz73 3 роки тому +2

Stepping motors, along with linear and piezoelectric (ultrasonic) motors, have been around for many decades in various industrial and commercial applications outside of photography. Stepping motors are noted for extremely high accuracy, high torque, and low maintenance. Both stepping and linear motors emerged around the same time with their use in lenses due to the rise in video - low noise. The ultrasonic lenses of the past tended to be very noisy and tended to hunt for focus.
I'm not sure why stepping motors have a negative view as it seems to be the ideal technology for lenses. The Z 50mm f1.2 has two stepper motors - each moving a different element group - and is the right way to implement for accuracy and speed.
