The Open Box Car is Exactly what Hobo Shoestring 🙏 would have Rode so both Shoestring and your Viewers are Glad you made that Choice. R.I.P. Hobo Shoestring.
Great video. Thanks for posting. RIP Hobo Shoestring on the Westbound!
Well I’m locomotive engineer out of Stevens point. It’s nice to see what it’s like riding somewhere other than on the headend! I run from Stevens point to Pokegama then return the next day. If you’re ever on my train I sure hope I give you the best ride ever!!!
@@stevegosney1326 awww, thanks. That’s a long run, but nice scenery. I always thought it was sort of odd that the run from Fond du Lac to Stevens Point is so short compared to going to Pokegema. I hope the railroad is treating you well. Take care.
We were just in Duluth and rode the Soo Line Caboose to Two Harbors! Stay hydrated my friend!! See you on the next vid!
Duluth is such a cool place. I saw your video of the boat arriving a couple of days ago!
ive never actually had the chance to ride the inside of a boxcar, but it is on my wanna-do list. Theres gotta be something so cozy about being inside a dry boxcar, while its raining outside, as you sit back and travel.
Yes, especially at night!
I'll tell from first hand experience, it sucks.....not only that there is a wind thunnal, violent shaking, also it's the first car anyone will check if looking for riders, and there is nowhere to hide...not to mention if that door slams close from slack action(which happens quite often) there is no way to get out, and basically you are trapped in a giant coffin, could be weeks, to months before anyone finds you.. Boxcars are probably the most dangerous ride....being locked in one has two outcomes: 1 you cannot contact the outside and you d13 from lack of hydration/oxygen/food or you do have service and you go to jail...so, just, don't do it, please.
I cannot even count on all my fingers and toes how many people I know personally that lost their lives to this type of ride.
@@hobeone1192 sounds like youve been riding for awhile and know what you're talking about.
@@slserenader almost 14 years
@@hobeone1192I never thought of the danger till I read this! I will think twice about doing this!
The only time I hit Superior was taking a ride out of North-town Minneapolis and the Junk train turned off just north of the yard instead of turning to the left for Fargo. Had to hitchhike back to North-town and try again. Got an IM that time.
Really enjoyed seeing the beauty of the state we live in ! Being a fellow senior citizen in my 60's , as yourself ! I was impressed when you got up in that boxcar ! That's not easy with the balast rocks ! Good job George !
@@chrisshaw4228 truth be told Chris, I used a small log that was along side the tracks as a bit of a step. But, yes, it’s usually a major challenge!
It's not often that six foot tall isn't a tall enough human to do something so simple.
It's frustrating when one can't get in. But, when is trying to get out, it's scary heck!
Enjoy viewing the country side with out seeing all the signs, roads and buildings along the way, You always know when and what song to play to put the video over the top. Thanks Mr. George happy rails to You always
I used to jump on Trains back in 1995-1998 when I used to be homeless It was fun but I haven't thought around it since then.
Waiting for the next episode! Enjoying this one outside drinking coffee in hot 'n humid weather!👍👍👍👍
I love the box car ride haven’t seen you do one of those in a while, fun times going on this summer! I love the video!
I don't get many of those and either the crazy rain it sure came to the rescue! I hope you're having a great summer!

As I sit here and suffer with covid it always makes me feel better to watch a video from Mr George hopping a train,
@@wolfandhoundh.a.e oh no! Here's hoping you get over Covid ASAP!
What a great ride….can’t wait for the next episode
Well I hope your luck held out. Great getting an open boxcar. Thanks
It was truly lucky given the down pour that took place right after leaving!
This made my day, George. Thanks.
Looked like a nice ride. My buddy just went through Joilet yesterday on a train and sure enough, it was raining.
I guess I'm not the only one who gets rained on there!
i used to do this when I was younger, had some amazing adventures. Wish you all the best.....✌
The tenacity is admirable. Keep it up 👍.
Watching your videos are a lot of fun. Thanks from New York
I've lived here my entire life and never went in a boxcar! I know what I want to do now!!! ❤
Hard to beat a great box car ride.... Nice George ! Looking forward to the next episode. Best wishes !
Glad you caught a good ride in an ideal car. Smart use of the spike George.
You went through my mome town lake villa illinois on that train back in high school is sit and watch the trains all the time got invited to check out the cab once the engineer and conductor would get out and walk around the park sometimes if they knew it was going to be a while waiting for other trains would probably be a great place to catch out really due to how often trains stop there to wait for other freights and metra to go by had metras afternoon schedule pretty much memorized those were good days
As Hobo'esq as it gets. Nice ride you got. Mark was there in spirit with you. Boxcars were his favourites apparently. I will look forward to the next video when I get a chance to watch it.. Hope you are having a good summer George. Cheers 😊
I was at Airventure last week and crossed the double set of tracks on my way to the sea plane base East of the airport. I wondered if I had watched any UA-camrs ride those rails. I'm guessing the next installment may cover that stretch of tracks. Thanks for taking us along!
G im sitting here 10:00 pm eastern with a drink in one hand smoke in the other watching enjoying your vid you nver dissappoint your small interludes not bad either, thanks oh yeah i punched that sub.
Welcome aboard!
Always good tunes! Thanks buddy
Hey, you are coming through my town next ......
Great scenery-gotta love Wisconsin in summer. NOT winter!
Great ride George !
Thanks, George!
This was a really scenic and peaceful ride, reminds Me of good Ole Shoestring, seems like a good way to see the Country from a better perspective. Glad You had the boxcar while it was raining, every time I see You or the Yard Buzzards ride it reminds Me of the famous train song, City Of New Orleans by Woody Guthrie, hopefully the next romp on the high iron goes good for You,NS on the Christiansburg District headed towards Roanoke VA is really scenic!🛤🚂🍻
You need an innocuous little stick on front view mirror that you can set up on the door frame to monitor what’s coming… and maybe a telescoping selfie stick with a mirror on the end (a la Saving Private Ryan) so you can peek out the door to or with the right angle / length you could see if you’ve got tracks on the opposite side.
(Better yet a power drill with a metal hole saw bit so you can make your own windows…😅)
There we go, custom windows, lol.
Thanks for sharing
Love it.❤
Nothing like treating yourself to a box-car in the rain 😊❤
Great video
Man, how lucky was it to find an open boxcar moments before the monsoon?
I work for the railroad up around Duluth. Shoot me a message next time you're around.
I'll be waiting on your continued ride and your ride back. This is just a thought. I wonder how Silvia gets up in one of those box cars🤔.
Noah must have to boost her up.
Wow I can't believe how long I have been watching and waiting for you to post a new train ride.
Nice video G Man! Safe travels!
Thanks Brad!
Hey George good to see you out on the rail, been getting into to shape to ride myself, depending on the ballis it can be tuff 4 us old guys to get in a box car looked like u brought a step ? Ride on, ride on 🚂🚃🚃✌️
@@davet.3587 yes, it can be a challenge. That was a stump that was next to the tracks so I took advantage of it! Hope to see you on the high iron!

Kool box car picture. I want to glamp in a box car
It's a dang good thing that you're tall, that looked like a long way up into that car.
Yes, it helps, but I also cheated and used a piece of wood as a bit of a step;)
@@Jumpingoffthecliff
I saw that
Good thinking 👍
would love to ride trains but here in the uk i think that would be impossible. thank you for another great vid.
Freight block on the M347. Slow ride to Symington!
You are on your way, great! I knew you would figure it out.
10:10 nice spot and house there, I assume you knew it was coming since you went over to the door opening. Probably a little buggy and humid for me.
I didn't know that house was right there, but that section is rural enough to get away with shooting a little video. Quite the place though!
@@Jumpingoffthecliff I think I found it on maps - you had stopped on a siding just south of W Higgins Road next to Cabela's in Hoffman Estates, IL. The house/pond is about 2.6 mi north in Barrington, IL. Sounds pretty posh.
An open boxcar, the ultimate in hobo luxury. Couldn't help singing Roger Miller's King of the Road if I road in one of them.
I'm sure you'd sound way better than I would!
Well you made it half way
Many grunts and groans in this latest vid!
LOL, yes, I noticed that too. I'm getting a little long in the tooth;)
The old Shoestring door stop or he used a metal plate they used to drive spikes in ?
Hi George, Great Video. Sure glad you had the boxcar while it was raining. I saw you with a railroad spike. Did you jam it in the door to make sure it didn’t close on you ? Thanks
@@TCRailRoad yes that was to try to secure the door a bit. It isn’t as critical in a double door situation, but it can’t hurt just in case.
@@Jumpingoffthecliff George, have you had any near misses where the spike worked out of the channel?
Drop in for coffee and Swedish pancakes next time you hit town...
Must have just missed you
Where abouts?
Did you hear they had a big derailment going on the mainline between Minneapolis and St Cloud MN. It was shut down for 2 days. We had no railroad traffic. Now they are running again but going slow through here.
Yes, I saw news footage of the pileup. Glad nobody was hurt!
When last did you ride in a * Covered Wagon; * being able to avoid the vagaries of inclement weather and enjoying the evident creature comforts thereof ... ? 🤔😆🤙💫💥
It's been awhile, maybe a winter hop in 2022?
Did I see that your boxcar ride was close to a DPU.? Thought I caught a glimpse in one segment.
Yes it was five or six cars back.
Im new to this channel. I enjoyed watching your box car ride to my hometown. Are you a retired guy that does this for fun? You dont come across too me as someone that is homeless.
@@vikings844 yes, I am retired and do this for fun. I’m fortunate to have a wife who supports my travel choices;)
💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
Everything you do is a bell ringer! Just be safe and stay healthy.
I’m sure you got caught in a box car once? - i’m nervous!
Yes, they're too easy to get seen in, if, you try and get video;)
With the right cloaking technology you could ride atop tank cars with impunity...
If a ride shows up and your just sitting there… your doing it wrong lol
I hope you can ride this boxcar all the way up to Duluth and not have it terminate in the middle of nowhere.
@@edgein3299 me too!
Where's the seatbelts?
Won't railroad employees look in open boxcars first.
It depends. I don't think they make a point of it, they're pretty busy just keeping things moving.
George, did you see the other rider's backpacks hunkered down behind the highway cement supports? Running time 8:51.
I did, but I'm not sure they were backbacks. It's possible, but I thought it might just be garbage piled up under the bridge. I'm not sure anything much stops along there.
@@Jumpingoffthecliff Could have just been hitchhikers from up top finding a rest stop out of the elements
I wonder what the percentage is of people who would call after seeing someone on a freight train. I know I wouldn't, even before I started watching videos like this. I may have thought it was a worker or something, but I'd figure it's none of my business. I also think you don't have much to worry about being seen these days, because everyone stopped at a crossing is probably on their phone. 🙂
I've had a passing train crew spot me and I was pulled off of the train then allowed to get back on. I've been called in twice from road crossings, the first time the dispatcher thought it was a different train that was going the other way, so they checked it instead of mine and the other time, I got off right away when the train stopped. So, it happens more often than I want, but who knows how many times I've been seen and the people didn't care. That's one reason I like riding out west, less chance of being seen;)
I always enjoy your videos George. Stay safe and thanks for sharing. I look forward to the conclusion of this trip. By the way, are there any print copies of your book available? I'd love to read it, but am not very tech savvy and am unsure how to purchase a digital version, or how to then be able to read it.
Thanks Chris. Unfortunately the first book is e version only. I am working on a second one that might be printable.
@@Jumpingoffthecliff well then, I'll just have to figure it out. 😃 Thanks for the reply.
What river was that along the tracks?
Fox River.
Dat boxcar looks nasty, G2! Don't you prefer the view from a grainer?
It depends on where I'm riding and the weather;) If I can stand by the door in wide open country, then I'll take the box car. But, grainers have their advantages too, you can see out both sides for one!
@@Jumpingoffthecliff why not bury a boxcar in your yard for use until the nuclear winter passes?
Duluth sucks, I should hop a train out
To each his own. I love visiting Duluth. It's a long walk out to the CN yard, but lots of trains headed out!
You up here??
@@hobeone1192 no, I’m back home. I take it you’re up there?
@@Jumpingoffthecliff something like that...
Those box cars sit so high, how do you get into them? Portable ladder?
It's not always easy, but I can usually stand sideways with my back along the door frame and get my leg up then pull myself up. In this case, I used a stump that was laying there;)
Would you take someone along with you who has never rode. Stay Safe
I have taken people a few times, but this particular route makes it really hard to not get seen. The last time I took somebody along here we got spotted. Luckily, we avoided any consequences;)
The trains and the weather have no mercy no matter what. there's nothing you can do about it. are you sure about this.
Fantastic last minute hop out. You are laid back to the max😊. Take your time getting on the boxcar. Casually swing that left leg up and slide in. 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃😄✌🏼
Great video I am empressed with you getting into the boxcar. I am the same age as you I would not be able to do that you are a class act .if you find yourself in calforina near salinas contact me
@@terrirush925 I cheated by stepping on a stump to get in;) it's a struggle otherwise!
Glad to see it work out for you. Good to be out of the rain.
