One of the saddest, most heartbreaking songs, but, oh, what a musical gem. It was a treat when it came on the radio in 1969. But it does make me sad. Released on January 25, 1969, reaching # 2 on March 9. R.I.P., Dennis.
Ain't a song I know that has words as good or better than this one. Bar none. I'm 68+ years old and have heard many songs. I remember back in '69 when this was released. Dennis Yost could flat out sing that's for sure. RIP kind sir. Your music lives on. STILL!
Such a sad but oh so beautiful song. The one love of my life and I were married in 1968 when this song was playing on all the radio stations. We are still married to this day 03/10/21 and are still very much in love as if time stood still. I am a very lucky man
Im 24 years old and although i had to say my age, I can't stop listening to this, Im so feeling that 60's vibe..this song, and stormy are pure gold to my ears, perfect to listen to on a cloudy day by the pier..
......I was 13 years of age when this song was released, ....I loved it then, and it's still a Classic, and although Dennis Yost has left the Earthly Plane, the music he created ,along with The Classics V ,lives on.... such a beautiful thing. I'm impressed thst you were 24( that was 7 years ago, according to the date here ) ...and listening to this .... I'm in my late 60's now, and I'm glad and grateful that I grew up with this type of Music.
Thank you Dennis for “Traces”. One incredible song from early 1969. I was in Pershing Junior High School at the time being bullied. It was songs like yours that kept me going!!!
Someone commented below that back then the music business was more about music and less about business and I think they're mistaken. The music business has ALWAYS been about money. That hasn't changed. I think the difference back then was that the young people who wrote and performed the music were still greatly influenced by their previous generation. They were influenced by their older generations work ethic and their belief that anything of true substance came only from hard work and mastering whatever it was you wanted to do. The young people who wrote and performed all that great music may have wanted to make their own brand of music different then their parents music but they knew that the basics remained the same. Work hard, learn it well and there are no shortcuts. This was something they didn't even think about. They knew that if you wanted anything worthwhile and anything of substance, there were no shortcuts. You had to put in the work. Add to that the sophistication of older music and this great music is what you get. Listen to the complex melodies and chord changes in this piece and other greats from that era. Hell, the Beatles were critically acclaimed songwriters and by that I mean that even classical critics saw the complexity, nuance and genius in their work. The Beatles are the most important examples of this. They were no overnight success. They worked brutally hard before they conquered the world. They were disciplined and focused in their songwriting and in their playing. They made it look easy but THAT was part of their genius as well. These guys were true musicians. They knew more than just three chords and you can hear it in the music. These guys, The Classics IV, weren't anywhere near as prolific as the Beatles but a few of their songs were every bit as good as most Lennon & McCartney tunes. Just about all of the great songs of that era came from musicians, songwriters and bands that worked hard at their craft and by that I mean the music. They didn't focus on the bullshit showmanship that you see today that tries to dazzle you and confuse you into thinking that there good at music. You don't see these guys putting on ridiculous light shows and dancing like idiots with half naked women around them. I'm all for naked women but that is not good music The music stands very well on its own. THAT is why the music back then is so damn good. It's no mystery. If you want something good and if you want to accomplish something noteworthy and great it takes a shitload of work and dedication and there's no way around it. None of this Star Search overnight success bullshit. I'm a musician myself and have been crazy about modern music since I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan in 1964 and I very very rarely see any talent that matches what was around back then. It just doesn't happen. Kids today want to pick up a guitar and be playing like Hendrix in a few weeks and if they can't do it they give up. They want to start out being good at it and that just doesn't happen. They have no staying power or patience. They want instant gratification in whatever the attempt or they give up. THAT is why music today is so damn bad. It's no mystery. If you want something good and if you want to accomplish something noteworthy and great it takes a shitload of time, work and dedication and there's no way around it.
You are so right where in all the great music go to the 60s and early 70s man my heart breaks every time I hear this song because it means a lot to me well that’s all I have to say
who else used to listen to WRKO am radio ....especially from Dec 26 to New Years day and listen to and write down the top 100 hits of the past year?....and see how many of the hits you bought as a 45....late 60's to early 70's
The song arrived to my ears in the Summer of 1969, January to March in South America. I did'nt even knew enough English, but the feeling is enormous. I did'nt have a situation that fits, but the theme is larger than that. There was another beautiful. now mithical songs in Spanish that Summer, but Traces keeps being among the handful of best themes of that Summer, in Lima.
We all leave traces of the love behind, as we slowly but surely age day by day...I've learn to appreciate life more now that I got 5 precious reasons to live for...GREAT SLIDES & AUDIO!!!
Ahh my childhood songs, one of those that I love and forever etched in my memory ...I would listen with my Aunts and Uncles...I miss those days soooo much! :(
A true, timeless classic that can pull at your heartstrings everytime you hear it....and yes, sad but beautiful all at once, which makes it so outstanding....
Talvez a mais bela musica da minha juventude, lembro de 1969 e de uma garota chamada Maria Silvia.........foi ela que me deu o LP deles de presente..........saudades.
1969 remember this song as if it was yesterday!!! Its lyrics said what I wanted to say and how I felt!!! Still gets to me after all these years!!! Thanks!!! 4cksakai
For a while, I lived in that era of first love, coming of age and then departing and leaving that special girl for an unknown future. Now age has my attention and I look back and see my mistakes and failures and measure them against the success in my life. This song evokes special feelings that I feel and makes me wonder at times....what if I hadn't walked away?
Bill, I have the same feelings of one I thought would be the one. Even when being happily married to a great wife of nearly 53 years I still wonder what If I had handled it differently and not have been so stubborn.
@@dbj1941 sounds like we share similar things with bill. Keep thinking of the "what-if" I had made different decisions with my special girl too. She was more than my first love, but I didn't understand it. Remembering 1978, when I saw her walk into my life. A thing of Beauty, formed by the gods. Love in the form of a sweet young woman. She glided when she walked. The softness of her voice. Her eyes....pure bliss!
I have to say Bill, they come no sweeter than that special girl in our lives. First love, nothing compares to her. They make all the difference to our hearts.
I can also say she was more than my first love, but then in 1963 I met my second love, my wife, I saw that thing of beauty, the eyes, the hair, the perfect complexion, the body, her sweetness and just the way she carried herself I was smitten. Now after 53 years of marriage I know I did the right thing.
This song captures what I am going through at this very moment. A old love wound that has totally consumed me and now feel, after all this time I am compelled to heal. I left her crying at the top of the stairs with my bags packed and am in need of some serious absolution. This was a beautiful person with a beautiful heart in every way and I mean every way. I have not seen or heard from her since. I honestly don't know why this has suddenly come upon me but I am on a mission no matter her response. This has bled into my every waking moment. I need to know how things turned out for her without upsetting her own life once again or my own. I will be hurting deeply until then and strange enough I feel deservedly so but time is running out. I still see her vividly and exactly as she was that night when I left and now I am the one that is left crushed. Sometimes if you are searching for a feeling that was lost, maybe it never really left.
Great post, we seem to be in the same situation. I would love for just she and I to be able to sit and talk for a few hours. I have had a wonderful life and family and I hope the same for her, but I would like to close it out.
Definitely, this is nice love song to listen to, and take a moment to think about the past, it may brings you some joy back the old time or sadness may be too, but just love to listen this old love song.
I was born in 1941 so these songs were mostly from my teen years and one of my favorite things to do now is listen and read the lyrics. I'm not sure all of the lyrics were sinking in during the teen years when mot of us teens were in heat.
Oh ! Memories from my youth, when I had a crush, my first crush and only, she's now my wife for almost 50 years in April our anniversary. High school years.
Thank you Mr Blatt (Greenmont elementary chorus/music teacher) for bringing this song into my life, so many years ago!💖💯

At 47, this is why I like getting old!! Good classic song!!
I am a college basketball coach and my players have often commented, "Coach, how come your era got all the good songs?
+Doug Schakel of course, back in our time, the music business was more about music and less about "business".......:)
+Terry Knepper I'm sure it was also about business back then.
+MIKECNW I think ''the business'' back then, actually liked music though.
I'm sure they still do now.
