The day my Moms eyes looked at me and they had no idea who i was was the most painful devastating day of my life...there are no words to describe it. It hirt worse than the day she passed.

Took care of my Mom for 20 years. She had dementia and we loved her and kept her out of a nursing home. My husband, children and granddaughter helped. That’s what family’s do. No regrets.
My mother was diagnosed with dementia around 57. In 2019 I told my brother that I was taking a job out of town and that he and my other brother had to care for her. He looked at me and said Sis you are the best person for mom. I always admired you for that. He told me that he didn't think he would live long. Travis used to say that even when we were very young. He would say I dont think I'll live long but I'd rather go 1st so I can watch over you guys. So I told him you will be fine brother but he started to cry. I said Travis you have to be ok or I won't. He looked up to me and said you have to. I was upset I said you are my best friend you don't get to tell me to be ok. I need you. A few days later he complained of stomach pain. He went to the hospital and we expected him to come home. I left the hospital that night but uneasy. His eyes were so dark. The next morning he called and asked for mom and I. We went to the hospital. I held his hand, he flat lined.I held his hand tight and the doctor said We have a pulse. I thought he was fine. I thought he was coming home but he died squeezing my hand. Travis was moms favorite and I was just fine with that. 2 months later at 62 her alzheimers was much worse. She didn't remember Travis had passed. So on top of feeling guilty about Travis I now have to listen to her talk about him everyday like he is here. I don't even know if I grieved for my brother because I'm grieving for my mom. Travis wascacbig help because he would make her listen to me. She is very mean to me. She ignores me and will talk to everyone else, she walked up to me balled up her fist and punched me in my face. She wouldn't stop. I just wanted to care for her, to let her know I love her, and that I'm worthy but she will never comprehend that. My only other sibling vowed before she got sick that he'd never care for her so it's just me. He hasn't gotten her 1 time since Travis passed. Alzheimer's is dirty in so many ways. I have never met someone with Alzheimer's like my mom. So confusing.

Lisa Oz is 110% right. It’s a part of you that is slowly leaving you. The problem is that your mom takes care of you, loves you and nurtures you but doesn’t prepare you for when she is no longer going to be around. We are ALL in TOGETHER. Sending Gods Blessings.

My husband is afflicted with the disease, as well.So many others have someone in their family with this awful disorder, My sympathy goes out to you. I miss the Dr. Oz show l used to watch on T. V. I hope you are content with your new political venture. I admire you, also your children, especially Daphne. Incidentally, Daphne is my first name. My parents named me after a flower, my middle sister, Carol, a song, and my younger sister, named after a bird, Margot.
My mother died a short while ago, with Dementia. I took care of her til the end. It was hard. She was 93. Miss her so much.

When my Father started having problems with Dementia my Mother learned that she had throat cancer. We jungled from my Mother to my Father. We lost my Mother and at that point we started staying with my Father 24/7. Nursing home was not an option, we had very loving Parents and we felt that we needed to stay with Dad. We relived my Mothers death 100 times over each day. What was so strange is that my Father always remembered each day to go to the cemetery to visit my Mothers grave. Night time was the worst ( sun downers), I got to were I would get into my Fathers recliner with him and we would look at my iPhone, we would look up different animals or even look at Facebook. That helped him to handle the sun downers until it was time for him to retire for the day. My Father passed four months from my Mother with a broken heart. Although he had dementia he never stopped talking about my Mother. My Parents had been married 63 1/2 years. This is my story about dealing with Dementia/Alzheimer’s. I’m so sorry about you’re Mother and pray to God that he gives you and your family the strength and knowledge to handle this horrible disease. 🙏🏻

Both of my parents suffered with Alzheimer’s. First my mother for about 4 years and she was very angry most of the time. My father on the other hand was so kind and patient...would laugh a lot with me about his childhood and be mischievous like a little boy. Learned not to force their memory, introduce myself as I walked in the room and say I loved them. Most of all love them and always remember they loved you too. Because yes, they will forget who you are...🥀.
My mom has alzheimer. She had diabetes. One day she took a boxful of chocolate and her blood sugar shoot up and hurt her brain.She lost her memory of who we are. Then she was diagnosed having Alzheimer. Does stress caused Alzheimer and does sudden shooting up of blood sugar hurting the brain causes Alzheimer?

Dad has Alzheimer's... it looks a little different in every person. The hardest day for me when he didn't know who I was. But he's always glad to see me because he knows I'm someone who cares. They still recognize smiles and love. Give them plenty of both.
Dr Oz, I understand what you are going through...about the slow and grueling deterioration of your Mom's memory. I am a nurse and I learned from my siblings that our mother started to wander and forgets the names of her children...when I saw her in the Philippines, she looks like a homeless lady, she has unkempt appearance...I brought her to the US and I gave her homeopathic remedy Solidago compositum (kidney tonic) and Hemp oil (rich in omega 3-6-9)...the first 6 months is rough, she crawls and she doesn't want to take a shower...I started her with 6 hard boiled eggs too as evening snacks daily, then lo and behold she asked me to give her a lipstick...one day at a time Dr Oz. Its been 3 years she is starting to remember important moments in her life and conscious of her appearance. I would like to share with you and your readers the poem I wrote for her.
TRADING SHADOWS
She sat bewildered

trying, attempting to remember
a moment, a time… a life
She traces her bent fingers absently in the air
on the almost forgotten contours of a dear face
the aquiline nose, the thin, pursed lips, the strong cheekbones,
the lingering kisses that made her cheeks turn crimson
the burning embrace now replaced by the cold, biting winds of solitude.
Slowly, she lowers her arms as if in complete surrender
to the sneering mien of Fate
the implacable disdain of Youth
the impersonal gaze of Life
the taunting cackle of Age
her hands stopped tracing, feeling, recalling
a face, a smile, a name
as a shadow slowly looms and covers her
in a cloak of inevitable

@Rose Bud So true cause I miss my mom everyday since she's been gone with this disease in 2015.
I lost my Mom in 2014 to this disease. Then in 2015 my father was diagnostic. The hard part about this disease it is losing the person twice. First to the disease / relationship than in death. It is unbelievably hard.

My beautiful passed 3 years ago from Alzheimer’s, she was diagnosed 4 days before my dad passed, she was with us 3 years, 7 days, I hate that disease, hopefully there will be a cure😢🙏
I lost my dad one day before his 93rd birthday this past Feb and I am devasted trying to deal with this loss. He had the best care in a great nursing home and I was there daily by his side. I learned from a support group to live in the moment always and cherish the days. Some days he knew me some he did not, but he still was always able to put a smile on my face. He was a special man who lived for his children and I vowed I would be with him till the end and that is the greatest thing I could have done..live in the moment n love n support him unconditionally and we made memories till the end. I hope your journey with mom can have joy along the way during such a devastating disease.

we have gone through this with my FIL and now my dad...two men so very intelligent and talented.

I am so sorry that you will have to travel that journey. I did with my mom and she passed on to join my Dad January 16, 2019. I pray they find a cure for this soon. It takes their soul away and just leaves a shell. It is so very hard to be an only child and not have your mom remember you.

My mother has Alzheimer’s and has since early 2012. I have much to say about different aspects, but for now, I will encourage you to love her just as she is now. I love my mother more now that I ever have. It is intent to give her the greatest love that she has ever experienced. There is so much pain and grief and we all do it differently. Our grief has common elements but is unique to each, and this is the worst part of this disease for the family members. God bless you and your family as you navigate loving your mother.
So sorry Dr. Oz I know how you feel my dad had it, he passed away on June 3, 2019 and I still miss him so much it is one of the worst diseases around even worse then Cancer I think it robbed my dad of everything.. Your mom is a beautiful woman

I am so sorry Dr.Oz. i am a caregiver and after 2yrs and 8months, today I lost my client to Dementia . This never gets easier. I am Blessed to have had him as a client and the joy he brought me. My client's spouse lost him twice also. GOD BLESS♡

My family has walked these steps also. My stepdad was in denial of the changes in my mom. I’m so sorry you are walking this path. God Bless you and your mom.

My heart breaks for Dr. Oz and his family. I know the pain/dread of this dreadful disease. My mom struggled valiantly for many years. She refused to go gently into the night. my saddest moment happened one day when I asked her "Do you know am I, mommy? and she said "of course, how could I ever, ever forget my baby" and I thought to myself you will and she did. NO WORDS; NO WORDS to describe that moment....

I took care of my mom for 6 years & I over looked the signs too. I had to put my mom in a nursing home for safety reasons. Right now she is I believe in her last phase cause she just stares into space, mumbles & she no longer knows who I am. Sadly I am having to put together her funeral before she’s even passed away. It’s horrible living in this nightmare & it’s so stressful! I have no advice because I am drowning in the sadness & stress from losing my best friend, my mother to Alzheimer’s.

I'm not in her country to are for her, and it hurts when I speak to her on the phone and she no longer recognizes who I am. Just hug her tight with love. She's now your little girl. Be strong.

I took care of my mother for 2 years till she passed at 69 from Lewy Body dementia. Was the most horribly beautiful thing I’ve ever done and it was devastating to watch her slip away. I’m not the same person. May God Bless Dr Oz on this journey.

My sweet mother had dementia, several of her brothers and sisters had Alzheimer's, my husband's mother and brother had Alzheimer's...I worry about my children and myself that we may end up with it too. It is such a cruel disease and I pray, Dr. Oz, that your mother and your family can find peace dealing with Alzheimer's daily. I highly recommend the book, The Thirty-Six Hour Day - it does feel like there are more than twenty-four hours in a day. Maria asked such poignant questions that were of interest to everyone. sorry dr oz big hug i remember how people kept saying your grandma is just old but i knew something was wrong was the hardest to watch a person you love a person who was like a mom slowly disappear all i could do was be there like she was for me when i was scared or upset it’s a disease that needs to be talked about shared so others can help themselves or a loved one sending a prayer for your amazing mom

My heart goes out to you. I was there earlier this year. Same exact situation. I promise... you will get through this and your granny will finally have the relief she deserves. It's a beautiful experience to see the relief. Just comfort her, kiss and hug her, and let her know she is not alone and that she will be fine. Dr. Oz I can relate soooo much with what you and your family are facing with. I and my family are facing with this terrible and dark disease. I am at this moment my mom’s caregiver and I am with her 24/7. It is exhausting, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in this world. My Mama is my everything and to my daughters as well. Dr. Oz I tell people all the time, when we most needed our parents (at least in my case) they did the best they could and never gave up on us; now it’s our turn to do the best with them and NEVER GIVE UP ON THEM by giving them unconditional love and support. Thanks Dr. Oz my mum was diagnosed with AD. She could still recognised us but it was painful to see that it was not her anymore. Her behaviour & psychological aspects have really changed. We lost her recently. I am in the process of grieving but seems like there’s no end to this. It really hurts so bad to see how AD took her. She had NOF fracture, always confused, sundowning, she couldn’t draw a clock anymore, incontinent. Aneurisym & stroke caused her death. 🙏🏻🧡🤗 She was your fan Dr. Oz. Look after yourself.

So soon to hear this Dr OZ. Yes talk. When I first saw my signs of alzheimer's in my mom I was living with my parents after a brutal divorce and losing my home, so my siblings and dad wouldn't listen to me. About a year later everyone started to see it when my dad had a heart attack at home and told mom to call 911 but my mom just went to bed. It took daddy over an hour to get to the phone himself. She died 5 years later. He lived another ten after the heart attack.
He did live another ten years
When my father was alive he was clear thinking so the signs were not evident in my mother. After he died the signs were more notable. My brother would hear nothing of it . When she became unreasonable {I knew intellectually it was not her fault but did not make it easier} he left the house. Actually I think he took advantage of her dementia.
The 36 Hour Day book was extremely helpful to all of us daughter's as we walked the journey with our mother. Unite and keep sharing memories even when your loved one is gone. The joy will come back with the Lord's help!💜

Taking care of my mother-in-law who was diagnosed late last year. Her symptoms showed up a few years ago, but she is very stubborn, and she lived very independently until just 6 months ago. She is lucid, but extremely repetitious and confused, and she refuses to shower, wash her hands, or change her clothes. It’s a very difficult and frustrating disease. I feel for anyone and everyone dealing with dementia of any kind. Blessings to all who have dealt with, and are dealing with, this challenging disease!

I watched my uncle go through this and it started when hed go for a drive and call my aunt telling her to come get him because he got lost in his own hometown. that's heartbreaking to watch. stay strong and show your love to those who are showing the signs. god bless everyone!
URGENT ALERT TO EVERY PERSON READING THIS... 1. Before Alzheimer's is even suspected doctors are supposed to check any prescription drugs for allergies and/or interactions. Doctors are not routinely checking. My mum was thought to have dementia. She did not. She was given a drug that the elderly are never to be prescribed. As soon as that drug was out of her system, she was back. 2. A lack of vitamin D3 and or B12 can make the elderly lose cognitive abilities, become tired and not care for themselves. Provide them with necessary vitamins and they bounce back. 3. Have a good doctor check for NPH. Doctors are mistaking NPH for dementia. There are far too many of our seniors who are languishing in long-term care facilities when they could be living very well at home. PLEASE ADVOCATE FOR YOUR ELDERLY FAMILY MEMBERS. INSIST THE DOCTORS CHECK FOR OTHER CAUSES FIRST. You could be saving their lives.

Low bp or toi many meds can cause changes in crainial pressure also !watch for changes in pupil dialation when medicated esoecially in NPH or if they gave hit their head or been in. Accident 1also watch for dehydration low potasium and sugar also a big problem is medicine alergys to bp meds like lisinapril old people livers dont process meds as well
That happened to my mom in the hospital. When we got the drug load substantially reduced, her mind completely returned.
@@susanmoore610 many of us will enter the aging chapter that way. Start to build your support system now. Try not to live alone and/or have weekly activities...keep mental/physically active.

I am so sorry Dr Oz for what is happening to your mom. I can see how sad you feel. It made me cry. I too am a doctor and years ago realized mom has Alzheimers. She is 91 and her memory is slowly deteriorating. I am her full time care giver 24/7. Dad also had Alzheimer's. It can be hereditary. There is a gene Apo E that can show if you are at risk. There are other markers/lab work. You can help it if caught early. Please read Dr. Dale E. Bredesen's book. Or listen to some or all of his you tube videos. He explains it very well. The book is called The End of Alzheimer's. 3 main things he mentions is 1) exercise like walking everyday, 2) sleep well at least 6-8 hours, and 3) carbohydrates are poison to the brain. All my mom wants to eat is sweets.. like Dr. Oz's mom eating ice cream. They crave and like anything with sugar. Their appetite decreases and forget to eat and all they want is sweet stuff. Avoid all fruit which is sugar. Keep carbs down to less than 20 grams. It is very sad and difficult as I acknowledge I to can get Alzheimer's. I hate to aee my mom this way. We can only try and make it better. We have always been told there is no cure and it can't be slowed down. Perhaps that's true. We also know that the medications like Arizept, Namenda or others don't really work.. I've consulted 4 neurologists and all said the same. Don't bother to give your mom the meds it is not going to make a difference. In years to come one out of 2 people age 85 will have Alzheimer's. My friend is 68 and has it. Again please listen to the UA-cam videos on Dr. Dale Bredesen. He talks about reversing the symptoms on people with his recommendations. Probably slowing it down. He is in Clifornia and a neurologist for 30 years. I don't think he sees patients. Probably only for clinical trials, etc. I feel for everyone with a family member. My dad passed and mom is living and both with Alzheimer's. Blessings to all. Sorry for the long post. We want to learn all we can to help our loved ones.

My mother has Alzheimer’s too, and I am her full time caregiver. I am terrified I will get it. Do you primarily eat lean meat and green vegetables?
It is Not hereditary. The Processed food is killing us but most us can't face the fact. AND Doctors are taught not to until they retire and go into nutrition counseling.

Dr Oz........ so sorry to hear the news about your Mom..........in your prayers please ask God to give you the strength, health ,courage and wisdom to deal with this .Try and spend a lot of time with her, with lots of hugs 🤗 kisses 😘 and laughter.
My mother's symptoms are specially worse when she's tired. Once she gets some rest or a nap, she's a lot better. Back to normal.

One parent can obstruct the diagnosis as you Dr. Oz, you are not alone.
