like a lot of Jacks solos, If you count all the way through - you realise that what you thought was a free form solo... is actually all in time!!! and its totally mind blowing!! try counting along ;)
I just watched Weather Reports Montreux Jazz festival performance from 1976. It had Manolo Badrena on percussion with Alex Acuna on drums, they had an epic duo going for a bit... It was so cool to see what Manolo was like back then! I have only seen him in a couple videos. So very cool to know he played with WR and is quite amazing the more I listen to him.
You don't see musicians like Jack de Johnette and Manolo Badrena today. Driven, driving, full of energy, a bit crazy and void of stupid political agenda pushing. Today, they are all "follower" accumulators who are more artificially enhanced than artistically gifted. Joe Zawinul, Manolo Badrena, Lyle Mays, Pat Metheny, Jack DeJohnette: WOW!
6:08 Fuck!!! His chops are so unconventional but so great. They always have me wondering how he pulls this stuff off. To him none of this is "chops" its all just techniques he uses to be a lyrically bad ass improviser. No showing off!

I love Manolo Badrena's style, and playing.
