Listen to Jack! There is no finer musician. The fact that he hears An Orchestra Sound in the Drum Set is spot on. The American Drumset is a very unique instrument that can deliver the conglomerate soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices across the spectrum. Love Jack, he's one of a kind! And Rest in Peace Dom.
I'm not a drummer, or even a musician, but Jack has been been on my personal Mt Rushmore for almost 50 years. And hearing him say that he was seeking to be "liquid" in his playing expresses perfectly the feel/sound that I love so much. My mental impression of Jack's playing has always been of water flowing in a fast moving brook - running over stones and bouncing this way and that. Always "liquid" as he says, though I never thought of that term.
I owe Jack a huge debt for how he enriched my life.
Ralph's Piano Waltz.
Wonderful! Jack's a great musician & guy! Thanks for sharing & subscribing to our channel!
My favorite musician for over 40 years now. Always open, always creating, always listening, polyrhythms with all four limbs, great compositions, all those styles, amazing pianist, somehow put up w Jarrett for 40 years, still humble, still real...
Embodies Spirit in Music. Much love, Jack!
I envy the period Jack grew up in where if you really busted your ass and learned your instrument you had a real chance to sit in with people and make a name for yourself. What a legend.
I was fortunate to have my head put in the right place by this brilliant man at one of his performances years ago. We were talking about music and I mentioned that I was considering quitting playing. My favorite drummer and one the most inspiring musicians I have ever heard looked me square in the eyes and dispassionatelysaid “ if you can-you should” like the guru on the top of the mountain he immediately put my life back in order and I realized the absurdity of my comment.
Jack is a humble beast of a musician! He plays his music as he speaks... eloquently understated, but deeply profound, and full of true insight. This is what mastery looks and sound like.
And, of course, Dom’s excellent interviewing skills and level of enthusiasm is masterful in and of itself. 👍👍
This is great. This has the feel of hanging out in the kitchen and chatting about jazz all night til you don’t realize the sun is coming up. Always, ALWAYS really liked Jack, he’s a treasure; played on tracks that changed my life.
Well said! Jack's music has changed lives!
Without question, one of the greatest drummers who ever lived.
My all time favorite
For me he’s number one
He continues to float about in my top five, with a lifetime of lots of different music listening, but never rotates out. He is simply everything a creative musician should aspire to.
@@DarkeningSkies1 hell yeah!
I especially liked what he did when he was part of the Keith Jarrett trio. My favorite jazz trio .
The greatest jazz drummer ever. Combines the rhythmic complexity of Max Roach, the Subtly of Roy Haynes and the bombastic propulsiveness of Elvin Jones.
Roy Haynes so hip
Absolutely on point description!
Damn straight. Plus completely humble and down to earth, which is part of the reason why the guy has been so consistently great.
@@scotty6124 Any musical performance that includes him is automatically raised!
What an absolute privilege & pleasure to listen to Jack, The Sessions are just wonderful.
Joe McGarage Thanks so much!!!
Too true
edit..thank you Don!
Being as sincere as I possibly can, this is definitely one of the (if not the) most inspirational content I ever watched in my life. This would be the case even if I wasn't a drummer/musician. Mr. Famularo, thank you so much for your efforts, time and energy spent to make this happen.
Wow, thank you! Dom & The Sessions appreciate your sharing & subscribing so we can bring you much more great Artists & content!!
Right 🙏
Dom Famularo always asks pertinent questions and has the intelligence to sit and listen to the answers without interrupting. Interviewers, take note.
George Neidorf Thanks so much!!!
Possibly the greatest living jazz drummer ( along with Roy Haynes )! Great interview, as usual, from the peerless Dom Famularo.
dino de luca Thanks so much!!!
Miles found the dream team in Jack combined with Airto Moreira.
Just the best...avid fan from the 1970s!
My favorite drummer currently. Was lucky enough to see Elvin Jones live before he passed. I must of been 13-14..
Jack was one of my personal Super Horoes during my teenage years, and he always will be! Time gives it back to us mature and wise, a great rediscovery for all of us anyway. Thank you with love!
I think Go Ahead John on Big Fun is incredible...who can forget that stereo drum sound and John mcs fuzz guitar
I fell in love with this guy's playing when I heard him on the To be Continued record with Terje Rypdal. Hearing these brilliant, seasoned musicians discuss their art and the business is inspiring. Funny how often the most accomplished remain curious and; though confident rarely venture into arrogance.
Jack’s playing on Jaco Pastorius’ Word Of Mouth record was just breathtaking. It was a trio recording session at Power Station with Herbie Hancock and Jaco that got the ball rolling on WOM. I’ll never forget putting the multitracks on for the first time when Jaco returned home. Liberty City, Waltz (3 Views), and Crisis were some of the most exciting music I had heard in years. WOM was released eight exhilarating months later and in all that time Jack’s drumming remained as fresh as the first time we heard it. He is a master of his craft.
So many great player's stories start the same, music in the home followed by a school music program.
18:33 great insight...the fluidity, liquid, flowing sound is what I like so much about Jack's playing
One thing I,m taking of this clip beside the joy of having the master talks about his career is the fact that how important is having the teacher who cares and finds ways to connect and encourage students while learning ,enjoying it too .
Love Jack. First saw him with Charles Lloyd at Wollman Rink in Central Park, Summer, 1967. (With Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden.) Later saw him with Miles right after the Jack Johnson(?) sessions. Truly, a musician who plays drums.
I use his term Multidirectional Jazz to describe my book
Two wonderful gentlemen sharing their passion.
I saw Jack in a judge's jam at the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival in 1969 or 1970. Blew my mind!
69 Jack is one of his many peaks
A lovely bloke.
still love his attitude!!
I love Mr. DeJohnette's interviews. He brings so much history to the table whenever he does one. Not to mention he happens to be one of my favorite and one of the best drummers/composers EVER. Much love.🖤💯
In addition to all the other obvious aspects, Jack focuses on the needs of the numerous young drummers he'd like to see succeed financially as well as artistically... Big heart. Focuses on what matters most. I"m left with the sense that the more I listen to this, the more I'll hear of what Jack is about. Ends as he began: keep that spirit, spread joy. live it.
So true. I was fortunate enough to be at a formidable Copenhagen concert in the early 80's and was immensely touched to meet him shaking hands with audience at the exit!
Awesome interview Dom! Jack is my favourite drummer. I got to jam with you with my dad Ross Maio maybe 20 years ago Dom!
I want to thank you for doing this show. A great and more productive way to pass along information to younger generation. This is great mentorship cause you ask questions beyond just technical stuff. I think it’s important for us musician to think about Life: how to eat healthy in the road, how to earn a living today as musicians when everyone thinks music is free….etc ❤thank you!
Thank you so much for your kind words & appreciating our mission! Please help us attract the younger generation to learn from these interviews!
What a fascinating and inspiring conversation. Thoroughly enjoyed Jack sharing from his musical journey!
Nearly cried when he told the story about playing with Coltrane. What a life Dom is great too, brilliant interview.
One of my favorite players , just amazing.
Certified badass.
33:23 My face while watching this
Jack is one of the most cultured drummer.
Dom your interview chops are sharp, intuitive, inquisitive and all the other ‘tives.’ This is really uplifting-I’ve seen Jack live several times and heard his own great bands. But your question prod and leave space for this great living Master to weave his thoughts together for us mere mortals. Thank you sir!!
Genius
This is great ...
Thank you for sharing this wonderful knowledge...the last time that I witnessed you play the most beautiful concert in a lifetime, at NJPAC with Alice Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane & Reggie Workman...man you did your thing that night, you play light a GOD from heaven real spiritual
What a nurturing background so many great associations ,playing with records , jams , compositional drummer , learned to play at low volumes, love Jacks playing on the cellar door with Miles! Liquid rudiments. Absolute Master.
A great artist . Thanks 🙏
DeJohnette is hip to the new masters! love it
🙌🏿🏆🙌🏿
Quite a quote there at the top.
Yes! ABSOLUTELY..."Always have a positive intention when you come on stage to play because the music has the power to uplift people, lift their spirits...so you know you have that"

I first became aware of Jack DeJohnette when he played with Charles Lloyd. Then I saw him live with Miles Davis in Detroit. I probably also heard him when I saw AACM musicians Richard Abrams and Joseph Jarman in Chicago. Does anyone know what high school he went to?

Thank you for the interview The Sessions Panel. If possible, please pass on my most respectful wishes to the fine Mr DeJohnette. What fantastic phrase "percussion discussion". Maybe your next album title Mr (or should I say Dr and or Professor) DeJohnette?
Will do Mark! Thank you for your support of The Sessions!
I wanna hear about his experience with Bill Evans.
paxwallacejazz Jack talks about it a little in his interview on the NYU Steinhardt channel.
what studio/live albums would you recommend to hear Jack´s creativity behind the drums?
Licenciado en Sentido Común Google Jack and listen to all of them!
Look through the ECM catalog. He played with many people on that label and they are all great recordings.
Licenciado en Sentido Común “Freedom Jazz Dance “ w Mirosoac Vitous.. Tres Cun De Oh La by Joe Henderson..

Check out "Homecoming" by the Gateway trio. There is a live recording here on UA-cam. One of my favourites.
Good morning, Dom. How are you? I have a question: Why you sale the Jim Chapin's book 2 so expensive?
Rogerio Faria Because it cost so much to put together. The digital version will be less! Thanks
