Back in the late 70's this song was as much a part of New York culture as the subways and Central Park. It was played on TV constantly. Damn near brainwashed you into loving New York with this song!

I still get goosebumps when I hear this anthem. Heard it in the summer of 1978 when as a kid I visited New York City for the very first time. The chorus has stuck with me all these years.

I was born and raised in New York. I now live in Hot Sunny Florida. Listening to this song brings back so many memories. I remember this song growing up, from the tv news stations to tv commercials. Now listening to this song as an adult...I can't help being not just nostalgic but wistful, it takes me back to the simpler times, the noise, sound, smell, busy streets, the cold, the night lights of New York City is forever locked in my soul no matter where i am. A city that never sleeps. No place like it. I"ll luv NY 4ever!

This takes me right back to being a teenager in the 80's. All those great sitcoms The Facts of Life, Different Strokes, Who's the Boss, Three's company, Gimme a break, The Love Boat, and even soap operas like General Hospital, The edge of night, Days of Our Lives and every other commercial was punctuated by this I love New York commercial! Who would know it would become an indelible part of my greatest memories. Great days. This is still my favorite commercial. I ❤ NY!!!

For those of you too young to remember, this song was originally created for the ad agency Wells Rich Greene, specifically to promote the Big Apple ad campaign. It was so successful that it was later expanded to ads for the entire state, before becoming the official state song.

one stand up comedian I saw in 1989 said it best:
      "New Yorkers are busy. Here's how you ask for directions in New York (City);
Don't just ask, 'how do I get to the Statue of Liberty' -
Ask; 'how do I get to the Statue of Liberty, or should I just go Fuck Myself'?"

@@wingitprod I am 99% sure it was not Colin Quinn, mainly because of the voice - this guy did not have a distinctive voice at all - no accent even. And I never saw this guy again...anywhere. I confess again that this was my senior year in High School so it was a long time ago - But I do remember when I saw this routine. I had crashed at a friends house who had bad-ass Cable Service (I didn't have Cable) and we were all passed out in front of the TV. When I woke up it was on a channel that became or was Comedy Central and at that time all they played were 1 to 3 minute clips of Stand Up routines at comedy clubs. I laughed so hard I woke everyone up.

I made my first trip to New York City in 1975 and fell in love with The Big Apple. For all it's problems, all it's ups and downs, it remains THE Center of just about Everything...

This song and an accompanying movie showing all of NEW YORK STATE was presented to Hugh L. Carey, the then Governor by Colby Chandler CEO of Eastman Kodak at the New York State Museum in either June or Sept. 1977 or 78. I was there saw the original presentation and then apparently made a terrible "faux pas" by walking over to Mr. Chandler and drinking with hi. At Eastman Kodak people did not wander over to the CEO. At that time I was Counsel to the Governor's Office of Business Permits and the Director was Charles E. Fitzgibbon, chief lobbyist of EK. Great guy but I got dressed down the next day and 2 days later got a note from Mr. Chandler saying how he enjoyed meeting me.

Governor George E Pataki in 1994 put it best ""New York doesn't end where the Hudson begins!"" I agree with the majority of the commentary here, New York City would not be if it wasn't New York State! Although i am from NYC, and i love NYC, I love NYS just a little bit more! You can't getaway from it in NYC, but you can get away from it all by traveling upstate! I go flyfishing in the Catskills, and i used to fish Long Island Waters. I used to hike the Adirondacks! Where else can one take a balloon ride except in Glen Falls, NY? Where else can one be mystified by the amazing natural power and wonder of Niagra Falls?, except in Western NY! Salmon fishing much?....?? How about Pulaski, NY! Ever visit the Wineries of Westchester, Kingston and or Rensellaer counties? How about visiting the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Otsego? Have you seen fossils in their natural state like those of Panama Rocks, in Chautauqua County? We all love Lucy, but we can only visit her home in Jamestown, NY... How about a boat cruise of Lake Ontario's 1000 islands along the St. Lawrence River?.... Want some delicious Apples?? The don't call NY the big apple, because of NYC, the state boast one of the nations largest producer of apples for the US! Go apple picking in Warwick!!!! Go Star gazing in one of the many observatories in New York State! How about the Mees Observatory in Rochester!? Football??? How about the Bills in Buffalo? You can see the Giant and Jets, but in New Jersey! How about mining for New York State diamonds(Actually quartz)? The Herkimer diamond mines is where its at! The one atraction though that gave New York City its true Identity though is the Erie Canal ala Dewitt Clinton, Governor of New York City.... The main reason New York became prominent was because of the access to Trade! Up until the early 1800's Boston was the premiere city! Dewitt Clinton changed that for traders out west, by the construction of the Erie Canal way! Google this if you are not sure!!! This one state project single handedly gave New York City the title of premier trade city! I have only touched the surface on the many things to do in New York State, and the Great contributions, not only to New York City, but to the United States of America as well!

The politics of NY maybe what you just said, but the State is incredible. There is so much to do in this state! You can be a world class flyfisherman one day, then be a budding paleontologist another, you can sample wine throughout the state, or have that special private interlude with a loved one in front of the Niagra lit up at night, or catch a foul ball at Citi-field,etc...... I just did it, and i'm ready to do it again!!!! I LOVE NEW YORK!

@@3dartistguy The song is over 40 years old, i remember when Gov Carey was in office at the time when they were seeking an add campaign jingle to promote the state back in 76. The mention that it had to be a native New Yorker narrowed it down. There were over 400 qualifying entries and Steve Karmen won out. In spring of 77 the 'I Love NY' sign and Ad campaign were launched. He Mentioned about how much he loved traveling upstate NY, with his kids and how he enjoyed the city life... It's been over 40 years, but he mentioned his love for the state which inspired him to write the jingle when he was interviewed by David Hartman on GMA some 40 years or so ago! I remember! You must be 35 or younger! I'm 53... Broadcast Tv was practically life back in the 70's...

GUNS4MIKE1234 This is about the entire State of New York. It was used by the NYS Board of Tourism for the entire state. It was used to promote the skiing, fishing, nature walks and sight seeing for the entire Empire State. I understand what you mean...that this is only about The City. But it's a misconception.

***** Every state has an official state song...as well as a state flower, a state bird and a lot of things. No, I thknk GUNS4MIKE meant the rest of the state of New York. Many people from around the great state think (sometimes rightfully) that too much emphasis is given to New York City. (This video contains little footage of anything else.)
New York State is much more than the five boroughs of NYC. It's the beaches and shores of Long Island, the mountains upstate, the apple groves, Saratoga, Niagra Falls and New York is the 2nd largest producer of dairy in the US, after Wisconsin. It's a brilliant place to grow up and live, from end to end.

@SherwoodofRobin...Hey there Rob, Thanks again for your post of this song. It got me searching and I was fortunate enough to find (and purchase) a flawless vinyl copy from 1977 "Struttin Records" label Just like yours. I have you to credit for that because until I saw the flash of your "45" on your video I didn't even know it existed. Thanks again Rob. Take Care.....................Steve

@batfan1400 I am happy that you appreciate what New York City really was and what it should be. remember that you can take New York City out of the "grit" but you can't take the "grit" out of New York City. peace out...

You do know that this song refers to the entire State, yes? That the iconic logo is owned by the state tourism office? (And where are the lyrics about hiking and camping?)

You can buy software online called "Tunebite." Google it and any video you watch on UA-cam, you can use the "surf and catch" part of Tunebite software to download any audio MP3 of any video you watch. You can probably get free software too to get the mp3's, but not sure if I'd trust it. Tunebite also is used to convert Itune M4p file songs to more friendly MP3 versions.

I am surprised "New York,New York" by Sinatra is not the state song.

Forget about soundtracks, but where else can I find this song? In the future I want this song to be the beginning song of a movie I'm going to make in the future, but I can't unless I know where I can find it and upload it into my movie in the future. Please, tell me where can I find this song!

I;ve been listening to all 50 state anthems. (New Jersey is the only state without one. HEH.)
So far, I've listened to 31 of them. (Listening to them in alphebetical order.) Out of the 31 I've heard, this one, and possibly Nebraska are the only decent ones. (Heaven't listened to my own state of PA yet. Not even sure what it is yet. lol.)
Bu yeah this is a actually pretty decent. Reminiscent of the great Frank Sinatra and...the beginning of that one 70s or 80s television show..rolled into one.
