My heart breaks when Elsa dies but instead of being a forgotten burial mound along the Oregon trail, she is buried on the Dutton homestead. She represents the dreamers who never made it to California or Oregon but like the gorgeous yellow sun, she radiated all that was good and wild and free. The ending scene (which is not included here) where her version of heaven is that it is always morning, her beloved is by her side and the two of them race on horseback under the rising sun is so powerful. Still makes me cry.
I love how she didn’t just rescue herself. She wasn’t about to let her younger brother suffer and he knew to get his dad immediately. Those two were raised right.
i love that she also fought back. she knew she could easily die there, that man might kill her and she was going to make sure she left some marks on him to remember her by.
We got a real treat with Elsa narrating this series. The only thing I hate is that she wont get to narrate other seasons....but that makes it more special.
I think the scene that really sold me for Elsa's character was when that man attacked her in her bed. The man was after her, she knew what he was gonna do, but the first thing she did was make sure that John got away safely.
I know Isable May as Elsa was playing the part of native Tennessean, but whenever she narrated, I felt she as channeling Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara In "Gone with the Wind…
Tokala Black Elk is such a great actor! I hope this gets him more roles. To go from, what must have been blinding anger to understanding humanity in a matter of seconds is not easy to portray convincingly. But he delivers.

Elsa made 1883 amazing. Her life was just too short. I would have loved to see much more of her.
If you watch Yellowstone you will see Elsa in Beth. They were both free spirited and independent. They both were lightening with yellow hair.
