The old blues motif of "making the train" on the harmonica, combined with a simple/complex blues guitar lead, and a mindblowing syncopated backbeat. Count me in.
This must be almost a perfect modern fast blues roots recording. Everything is present, harmonica mimicking the train, lyrics in sad loss, guitar Orleans and voice knowingly winkin' at you, growling and playfully updating the old heart ache.
Don was able to attract great musicians. They knew they were with someone unusually talented. He started off as a great sculptor but his parents stalled that career. He was pretty famous when he was a kid.

Everyone says that Paul Butterfield was the best harp player of this generation, and they are probably right. The thing is lots of others play like Butterfield, it’s just no one can do it as good as he can. That having been said: there is only ONE captain, and no one plays the harp like him.
It always reminded me of that song too. What a legend. If he had sold out, he could have been one of the most renowned white singers ever. But he didn't even know how to sell out; see Strictly Commercial! For consumate artistry and singing exactly like howlin' wolf, Captain, we salute you!

John "Drumbo" French said in an interview that he hates this album. I think it's wonderful. I love Beefheart playing chromatic harmonica on several songs which showed he was an accomplished player.
My neighbor at a campus disliked this album such that he bought it from me overpriced. The next day I went to the record shop, bought the same album, and 24 bottles with beer. The show went on. He just laughed after being fooled this way.
This is my very first listen to of a full Captain Beefheart song. As a lover of music I find it interesting. Not really my cup of tea but interesting. I like the groove.

Read the musical inspirations of nearly any great band, and they will list this guy. I think he is a genius who was overshadowed by fellow genius and friend Frank Zappa.
Oh common... Zappa ? whos that ? oh, the guy who slept behind the wheel (recording console) when Don recorded TMR.. with no contribution at all.. but he "produced" it... sheesh..
