43 years of truck driving experience here. I am impressed that you think about driving a truck when you are doing it. Slowed a bit to get the tail gator to pass you and staying in the passing lane until the truck you passed had sufficient following distance. Following distance will solve most of your problems before they happen. When there is light traffic and a truck passed me, I’d move to the passing lane to see far ahead. If all drivers could think like you, it would be a much safer profession.

As a retired truck driver the best advice I can give is invest in a mini fridge, an electric stovetop, a nice TV/computer, a small grill for summer, adblocker for listening to things on youtube, A dehydrator for fruits and meats. Use truck stops for showers, laundry, and socializing. But don't give in and buy their over priced stuff. Plan your comfort accordingly. It's key for the long haul. Drive safe. Love from Wisconsin!

Our work is hard, it's critical to the success of our economy and many of us who do it, we care about the safety of others on the road as much as our own. I see you have an android phone. You’ve gotta get Smart Truck Route 2. $15/mo, and it uses Google maps but integrates truck routing. It’s gotten me all over the US and haven’t gone back to Garmin or Rand. It’s super useful because you can see next stop info and final destination info (like eta and distance) on 1 screen, and of course it has satellite view and you can drop a pin and route directly to that pin, like if you use satellite view to find the entrance, then you can route directly to it. One thing I hated about variant was, for me it was strictly forced dispatch. If I declined a load, they would force it on me automatically, and they expected me to take late night loads or leave and didn’t care that I’m tired at night and work during the day. I actually went to variant and left them twice.

Mad respect to you! I don’t think the truck slowed down. 65-68mph is a 3mph difference. For a 53ft trailer, would be 12seconds, plus the tractor plus the following distance you closed in. I only say this because I’m a slower driver and try to give truckers a wide berth. But I like your narrative and I’m subbing! Also I like to signal when it’s ok to get in front of me, but not sure if everyone does or likes that.

I was a US Army Reservist in a trucking unit. This was in the 1980s. We had the M915A1 tractors with a 400 HP turbo diesel engine and an Allison 5-speed automatic transmission. We had tri-axle stake and platform trailers. The governors were set at 60 mph. We would drive these rigs to Annual Training each year from Michigan. One year before we got those new trucks they shipped us and our old off-road trucks to Germany for an exercise. When we got the new M915A1s in 1984 we would go to Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia, Kentucky etc. Every once in a while we would get a Hands on Training (HOT) Mission. We would volunteer for the HOT missions and convoy from Grand Rapids, MI to places such as Bayonne, NJ, St Louis and such, hauling loads for the government. Had a lot of fun and it was a break from my civilian job as a computer operator. I would not want to be a full time trucker though as it got old after a few days. After I left the unit they were called up for Desert Storm where they hauled mostly bombs. One tractor was destroyed when it hit a wayward camel!. No one from the unit was seriously injured or killed during their time there thank goodness. Be well brother and thanks for doing your valuable job!

i stayed with a company 2 yrs to get my experience. had to put up with their bs. after that i moved on. i drove for alot of companies till i found the one i liked and stayed with that company till they sold their business to another. was with my last company and liked it till i did some stupid rookie mistakes and got fired. after that i was forced into early retirement. funny thing, the same company who fired me, sent a notice for me to re-apply but by then it was too late. now i just watch driver vids and see some of the country, i've been too, thru their blogs. i miss the driving and traveling

I’m a Canadian trucker and started going into the states recently and noticed the on and off ramps absolutely suck. You have no space to properly enter or exit without disturbing traffic in most cases. I’m so use to plenty of space in Canada and it’s a weird adjustment.
