  • Volkswagen Passat is in its eight generation. The B8 Passat may look very similar to the B7, but it's lighter, more efficient, and packed full of new technology.
    At the 2015 Geneva Motor Show Volkswagen Passat received the European Car of the Year 2015 Award.

    Tried this at my local VW dealer today, holy smoke! I set out to try the Polo GT, the Golf R-line and this. The Polo GT wasnt impressive, really loud and small and uncomfortable. The Golf was a major improvement, it was really smooth and comfortable to drive and last came the Passat. Wow..... It is amazing! I was going 100mph on the motorway and felt like I was doing 50. Well almost but you get where im going. It is so comfortable and silent, so spacious and elegant. My mind settled, im getting the Passat!

    I'm sorry man, but it just doesn't look exactly like the B7. I think this generation is one of the most radical Passat redesigns yet. Look at how wide and low the front of the car looks... Other than that, a great review as always.

    Great review as always, Marek. One improvement proposal for your next videos: could you add some details about the tested version of a car in the video description (motor, equipment line, ...)? As most of the cars might be provided directly by the car producers, I'm pretty sure they are massively packed with all that stuff that you might be able to configure, but never able to afford :)

      Sure. I'll try do that in the future. This is a 1.4 TSI 150 hp, probably Highline, and that's all I know about this particular car. It was a launch event, so the test cars were not specified according to any specific trim level.

      The external shots are from VW press service. During short first drive presentations like this, we rarely get time to do our own. Unless someone brings his or her own camera crew. I usually shoot everything myself, but that takes time.

      It's better than B6, similar to B7.

    • @unluckynumbersleven
      @unluckynumbersleven 9 років тому

      Marek Drives the B6 & B7 are the same car. The B7 is just HEAVILY face lifted, mostly on the outside. This may look like the B7, but it's an MQB car. It's entirely new and doesn't share a common chassis, like the B6 & 7 did. This means it's lighter, stronger and more efficient. Not to mention 20% cheaper for VW to make, so we get more stuff as standard. This is not only miles different than the B6, it's also miles different than the B7, because they're the same car.
      Now I just hope VWofA doesn't murder it like they did the B7.

    • @unluckynumbersleven
      @unluckynumbersleven 9 років тому

      Marek Drives I know that it looks the same, but saying that it's different than the B6 but not the B7 just doesn't make any sense, because they're the same car. That's like saying the B6 is better than the B5, but not the B5.5 (although this would be less far fetched, as the B5.5 had almost 2,500 changes from the B5, including chassis modification. The B7 just looks different than the B6. You can still tell it has the same body, roofline, etc, just new front, rear, slight interior modification, etc..)
      Point is, the B8 is entirely new and nothing like the B6 or its poser brother, the B6.5(7).

      To be honest it's quite opposite to the Mercedes C-Class review. With Mercedes W205 the Diesel engine was the one to go for, in your opinion. I know Mercedes 4-cyl. Diesel is loud, heavy and rattle as well so basically I don't get it. 2.0T petrol 211hp 350Nm by Mercedes-Benz wasn't punchy enough and here 1.4T 150hp and only 200Nm are pretty much better in comparison to 2.0 BiTDI 240hp/500Nm, seriously!? ergo, this almighty "VAG" seems to be the master of downsizing era.
      One thing is for sure though. Average lifetime of modern engines is shorter than ever :D

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 9 років тому

      Mercedes W205 It's down to the gearbox. The Merc is just a 100 kg or so heavier, than the Passat, and yet it felt sluggish. For the record, I'm not a fan of the MB 2.1 diesel either, but it had enough torque to overcome the slowness of the gearbox.
      The VW bi-turbo is fast, and there is no doubt about it. However for me it's not a finished product. There is still some tuning to do in the engine, as well as in the gearbox. I know it's a challenge, because in the past VW couldn't put more than 250 Nm through a DSG. Now they managed twice that.
      And one more thing. The last couple of days I'm driving a C 180 estate. Completely different car. Brilliant engine, although the gearbox is still too slow, and that's killing part of the positive experience.

    • @SaturdayCarFever
      @SaturdayCarFever 9 років тому

      I felt it, everything is due to the 7G-Tronic Plus issue. Partially I agree with that. This gearbox could be a bit faster sometimes, still no drama, however what a surprise and twist of events with this C180 wagon :D I assume with "sluggish" automatic tranny too.
      Seems to me that C180, C200, C250 would be ideal when matched, paired with manual tranny. So maybe is worth to test this setup as well ?

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 9 років тому

      Mercedes W205 I'd love to, but it seems Merc press office in Poland only has cars with G-Tronic. I think the last manual press Merc I drove in Poland was the previous C180 Komressor wagon. My theory is that with automatic gearbox there is less chance of rear tire damage. RWD press cars make surprisingly good driftmobiles ;)
      BTW, I drove the C180 today for about 100 km extra urban. The engine is good for 100-120 km/h. Above that it feels out of its depth. But great engine for the city.

      All in all, we all expect from a modern engine at least some improvement, however we only see VW's unreasonable marketing claims, here is why:
      1. Peugeot 206 GTI weights about 1100-1150 kg; however, the way I drove through Italian roads in the tempo of 3500-5500 rpm in montains I would never belive it uses 8 liters.....it does
      2. Another example Polo 1.4 TDI blue motion from 2011 - VW claimed it to use about 4-4.5 liter, when I drive it it uses 7-7.5 liters ...(my audi 2.0 tdi remap used less)

      Latest news regarding VW emissions are not so bad.IMHO all the car makers are cheating, somehow, emission tests. VW was lucky enough to get caught doing it. Now the figures are a bit high though, would be worth a try to find out about the exact power to weight ratio to some of the old passats against the new models. The old B5.5 with face-lift was quite economical on long trips.

    • @dimitrious19
      @dimitrious19 8 років тому

      +Robert C. The point is quite simple - I stated it earlier that my old Peugeot 206 GTI with 2.0 litre car uses as much as any new car between 7-8 litres of petrol with my driving style (1,750-4,500 rpm)
      Basically we cannot cheat on physics - regardless whether it is VW or anything else.
      But please don't call the new cars more economical, rather I should call your old car not well maintained
      Spent last 15 years with car from owning a small shop business to being a location manager at Kwik-Fit, I know what I'm talking about.
      As last but not least ! There is no economical engine - there is ONLY engine that fits your driving style !!
      One of my cars , BMW 320D (Decat, new turbo + remap =195bhp) used 1.5 litres LESS! diesel than a rented VW polo 1.4D blue motion .......
      silly VW marketing for ppl who don't know anything about cars
