For expediency, I decided to go sans script for this one. This is an interesting approach for Sonic Team to take, that's for sure. But will it be successful?
Yeah, it was kind of cool in Generations as a nice sort of throw back, but adding him to Forces turns awesome novelty into 'just another gimmick'. Guys...classic sonic should have been left a cameo, and cameos work best when they stay...cameos.
Possibly because of how ill timed a gimmick like this is. Sonic was already going through an identity crisis and has a fanbase known for making remarkably shitty OCs. Not only that, but this gameplay looked incredibly bland... basically Sonic Colors mixed with Sonic Boom without the Boost. This game just feels like a mishmash of various gimmicks and mechanics of past games as though it's Sonic Team's attempt to please every faction of the Sonic Fanbase they can in one game. It just comes off as a unfocused mess with unnecessary features. Classic Sonic and this Xenoverse thing didn't need to be in this game (At least the Xenoverse thing didn't need to be there as a core gameplay asset). He has an entire gallery of other characters with unique abilities that could've made this game a lot more interesting. This game just feels like one big missed opportunity.
That,s what i thought of too and some other people has said the same thing but most of them are being pissed because they still want the classic gameplay and just playing as classic sonic. . there really tired of new things being added to the game because there saying its taking the classic feel away from the game

Yeah, I'm not feeling Forces either. As you said, Sonic Team seems like they have no idea what to do with Sonic anymore. I'm just kinda tired of Sonic Team trying to find their footing now. It's been nearly 20 years already. I personally won't be buying Forces. Mania seems alright, at least.

I just wish Sonic Team would stop making Sonic games this point, not because they're bad at it per se, more just because they come across as so jaded. It's especially noticeable in comparison with Mania, a game that you can tell just by looking at is being made by a group of young, talented, passionate developers who just want to make Sonic the best he can be, as opposed to Forces which to me just reeks of Sonic Team half-heartedly trying to do what they think people want, but they have such a cursory understanding of what that is that whatever they come up with will inevitably be a walking chimera of conflicting ideas.
Naxiro Dark The definition of "scared to be unique" is Forces' only classic level so far being Green Hill. Yes, Mania has remixed old levels, but they've also shown several brand new zone themes we've never seen in a Sonic game.

I am actually kinda bothered by your tone and overall reaction to this... I am not a big sonic fan, I never had a sonic OC or even went around their web communities or anything, But having a character creator just seems like such a good idea and I would love to make one to play with! Customization of a character is everywhere in gaming now and the sonic style is very appealing, simple and easy to work with so it's perfect for something like this and makes sense perfectly as a GENERAL move on their part, I honestly feel most regular casual fans and just general people will enjoy the feature, as much fun as they might make of it (Me being a casual fan myself). So yeah, your reaction just seems a bit too negative. Especially how you assume this only cathers to a specific and ill-seen part of the community, it feels short sighted on your end. But oh well, your opinion is your own and I respect many of your points regardless.
Completely agree w all your points. This game isn't made for me either. Sonic Team yet again avoiding the task of solidifying solid Sonic control mechanics and gameplay. They for some reason won't come up with a solution so they pad their games w gimmicks. They should really consider giving the franchise over to the Sonic Utopia team so we'd finally get our true 3D Sonic title.
Enjoy Artwork Absolutely. Sonic Team need some new blood from head to toe. Especially with needing a new director. I'm certain the devs behind Utopia could create an amazing game with a proper budget. They're certainly more talented than the current tired staff we have at Sonic Team.
+Dag Jumah There's no point in people paying money for a game if it doesn't look good to them. You like Forces? Great! Go play it. Don't mind us. But us older fans seem to be frequently ignored or misunderstood when it comes to the 3D games, so we're just getting tired of it. I'm not gonna waste money on this. I have a huge backlog of other games to play, anyway.
I feel like the OC will die at the end of the game. Lmao I wonder if it'll have a super form.. xD also who else is gonna make Bubsy? And will the character be mute? Have a normal voice, but you can change the pitch of it?
As a 22-year-old Sonic fan who started with Sonic 2 on the Genesis I literally screamed when I saw that I get to play as an OC. I think it is absolutely hilarious and my inner self-insert fangirl could not be more excited. Like I am genuinely excited for this and ironically excited for this at the same time. It's very confusing.
I'm the same. Sonic 2 and Gunstar Heroes were my first two games. Granted, I never finished a 2D Sonic because the gameplay didn't keep me interested all the way through, but mixing it in here will keep it fresh for me. Plus, I have what can be considered a fetish for character creation.
The level design seems to compliment the gadgets that the 3rd character has. I'm pretty sure HE'S the main guy we play as where Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic fall in line as sort of Act 2s and 3s OR we may have to revisit areas and the Sonic's will have the main focus in the revisits. I think these 3 gameplay styles can work together it looks like it'll be sound so I'm excited. Also just a nitpick but age has nothing to do with appealing to fans with CaC. In fact, the adults are the ones MORE likely to enjoy this because they've played for years and a number of them have wondered "What would my own sonic character look like?" for longer
Dude, I'm 29 years old and I'm still hyped for this game. Physical age doesn't mean shit when it comes to entertainment. If the story and game play are compelling enough, anybody can enjoy it. But let's be honest, I'm going to watch some Let's Plays before trying to pick up this game. As for how the game works, IGN seems to suggest that you start off playing as your character because Sonic has mysteriously disappeared. Eggman has conquered the world in his absence, so your hero takes up the fight and eventually tracks Sonic down.
Well personally I'm excited, and this feature made me actually interested in purchasing the Switch and this game. I merely hope in the future we get rid of Classic Sonic / Modern Sonic crossovers for good. It's never fun if you're only gonna give us 50/50 of one thing. Classic Sonic belongs in another format, and should not be misused so easily. In terms of the customisation gimmick, maybe next time we'll only have Modern Sonic and the OC. Or maybe choose your favourite Sonic Hero out of a multitude and build your teams. Or just a solid Modern Sonic game, period. Regardless, I'm excited for this game, and this feature gave me more hope towards the future. If they're gonna listen to one section of their target audience, then they might also listen to other sections of their audience.
I enjoyed Lost World personally, I agree on the classic Sonic part, but I somehow have the feeling the OC character is getting a lot of hate not from his gameplay style but more from the fact it's an OC, like, I feel like if it was identical, but instead of being an oc it was Boom Sonic or Shadow, or Silver, or the base red wolf OC, but as his own non customizable character, he'd get less bashed, I don't know if you agree.
As a 36 yr old sonic fan I have no problems with nostalgia but I also believe change is essential for both old and new fans of the series, sonic generations was awesome for combining both old and new but for them to do again and expect it to have the same effect is very ignorant on the devs part especially when you already have a separate game which features the classic sonic, so what they should have done was keep it fully modern to let the playstyle really shine thru.
bro. im older than you and have never drawn a Sonic OC. this is the first ive heard of character creation in this game and think it sounds exciting. im looking forward to trying it.
Personally, while I'm not entirely against the idea of in-game OCs, I don't think the idea alone won't guarantee for a good game. There's other important matters, like level design and gameplay, that needs to be addressed by the time the game is released. While having custom characters sounds like a good idea on paper, it all comes down to how it's executed in the end. It could be a really good feature or just another concept that becomes underutilized or worse. We'll have to see when E3 comes around next month.
I still just want sonic adventure 3 with an actual refined gameplay style, like imagine if the other two adventure games were really polished and clean as opposed to clunky and awkward. They did something right with those games because I still like them despite their overall quality.
I was seriously confused when I saw Classic Sonic in Sonic Forces just after they announced Sonic Mania. I feel as if Sonic Forces is mainly a fanservice game. They took elements from the modern games which were the most appreciated then mashed them together and now you can even play as your own character in this mish-mash best-of Sonic game. I will probably have a lot of fun with this game, they seems to care more about releasing solid and finished product nowadays. I will also have fun trying to create characters from the comic books. But still, I'm quite disappointed with the route they are taking so far.
I'm sure it won't happen but I wouldn't be all that mad if this game somehow "kills off" both Sonics at the end. Then this new play style of our OC becomes how all the new modern Sonic games play! I really wouldn't mind if every sonic game from here on out required us to make a character with only cameos from everyone else. That way the sonic team could focus on one play style for the next decade or so. It would also help them when trying to tackle the world of multiplayer that's so dominant these days
To be fair while I do agree that it seems they're trying to still learn what modern Sonic is, I think these customisation elements are potentially them experimenting on expanding the Sonic movepool so that if they're successful with this OC they will more than likely be translated into Sonics set. It's much easier to experiment with an OC rather than tack this set on Sonic and risk pissing fans off by fucking it up.
I'm a Sonic Fan. I'm looking forward to Sonic Forces. I want to see for myself how the game plays out. I grew up with my first real introduction to Sonic being Sonic Adventure Battle, and my second exposure being the Sonic Advance line of games. So I hold great love of Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic. WHat I am not looking forward to is the inevitable edgelord OC crack shipping that will undoubtably follow. Looking forward to experimenting with character creation, though. Bring on the Mighty.
I feel like Mania is going to please Sonic Fans who love the core of Sonic, while Forces please the fans that care about the surface. There is literally a thing called the Sonic Cycle on the internet, and Forces seems to follow that formula in terms of its hype, while Mania is like an anomoly of the Cycle. Forces is like Unleashed in terms of the reactions of audiences. It is a game that has mixed opinions throughout its trailers and announcement and it is the first main Sonic game after a really really bad Sonic game. I think Forces will please most fans that don't think too hard about why they like Sonic or only like Sonic for his physical appearance.
What would Nintendo do if they owned Sonic? I always ask myself this question for every game genre I come across. Nintendo always care about the gameplay, and if they don't see it as fun, or engaging, they will change it. For example, Mario 64, they didn't make the game right away. They stopped and thought of ways to make the game funner to play, by a simple task of following a bunny. I would imagine something similar with Sonic, but I can't think of anything Nintendo would do to redefine him.
i guess we need an adventure style game boosting is just dumb :/ classic is cool but yeah nostalgia cant keep him alive... adventure games were really defined and good and i think in this point of view 06 and heroes were good tries as well they were challenging and not just go through the levels with enormous speed without memorizing any levels
Make a game based around the theme of what sonic was originally about in Sonic SATM. It was Dark with a 'little' humor here and there, winning was not always possible for them but at the end of the day they got something done to stop or thwart Robotnik's plans to ruin and destroy the environment/planet. That being said... this looks to be finally taking a step in that direction.
You are apart of a very small minority my guy. A lot of the old heads in the fandom have been waiting for this for a long ass time. Get with the times dude. We're in 2017, not 99.
You say that adding another character would ruin the character balance between two Sonics and the other character. Theoretically, they could add Sonic Boom Sonic and it wouldn't ruin that balance. Make the game deliberately designed to compare and contrast the three "pillars" of Sonic.
I can't help this mechanic was introduced a little *too* early. It'll drive sales, sure, but couldn't they wait until they just implemented the other playable characters back into the series and do the experimenting later? It does look fun (I'm a sucker for gear-based gameplay), but it seems kind of weird that SEGA's first quality assured Modern Sonic game is, yet again, experimenting with other things instead of fleshing out the base game. They could've just gone the Final Fantasy XV route. What with the main game being focused on the central characters and their story and saving the extra stuff for a separate game entirely (Like Comrades you could say). This could allow for both the fleshing out of the gameplay style itself and the pure experimentation Sonic Team is known to do. Oh, and cut Classic Sonic from the game. He really has no reason to be there even AFTER Sonic Generations's success.
I kind of wish we'd get more info though on the character creator. From what I've seen so far, and haven't seen to put this fear to rest, is that the character creator is merely going to be yet another gimic feature, and that Sega is not going to turn it into something fully realized. Which, honestly...boggles me. I have played Phantasy Star Online 2, which has a great customization system, and does a lot of things right, despite even becoming a free to play eventually. So I know Sega is capable of these things, then why is it that it feels this is going to be yet another thing they do half assed? Is it just a difference between the teams that work on those games, or is it that Sega just really is not as interested in giving the same amount of care to one of thier most beloved and well known mascots?
As a Fire Emblem fan, my only concern is that the avatar will be given too much central focus like what was done in FE: Fates. They must be certain to maintain the focus on sonic. The avatar gameplay does look enticing to be honest.
I think it would be neat to have the avatar be like the one from White Knight Chronicles. They're just along for the ride. XD I think it wasn't even long in the game before they even stopped acknowledging you, so maybe a little more involved and not utterly ignored.
I don't get the inclusion of Classic Sonic other than the fact that it's a fallback if the Modern sections fail. We have Sonic Mania which by the sounds of it is a fantastic rendition of classic sonic games.
I am not against the idea of customization but.... if this red, generic looking lynx thing with hipster glasses is the design they want to show off in the advertising, then I don't want to know what else they came up with.
Sega having the same problem as Capcom does with megaman, where they are just diluting and ruining their franchises, while ironically enough there are tons of fan games of both series out there that are alot better. Only stable game company mascot left is Mario still. I was one of the people who did want mavrick hunter for megaman, cause while it was a departure from the main series, at least it would have been something, as the most recent game for megaman was starforce 3 if I'm not mistaken, and that came out in 2008. While I myself am disappointed, I also recognize like kazeblade that maybe 50% or more, maybe 60-70% of the sonic community now is hyped for oc creation, to that I say, good for you guys, let me know if this game is any good when it comes out and maybe I'll buy it.
it's sad when the 1 good game coming from sonic isn't even being made by sonic team LOOOOOOOOOOL now if only they fire sonic team, we can make sonic great again
Why is the Sonic fanbase so very divided? It's hard for Sonic Team to make games now because no one is happy with the games they do make, so "playing it safe" is often the best route for them to even try to do. Even then, this game won't do it. It still won't please the fans. We have some people who think it's a really rad idea (myself included), but then we also have people that mock it and say stupid antagonistic shit, like "it's the rise of the furries" or whatever. I've seen a lot of good ideas here on UA-cam that people have presented to help the franchise, but since when do Sonic Team employees scour UA-cam of all places just for ideas? Exactly. Actually getting to create your own character offers a sort of uniqueness not found in previous games, and it's just different enough to distinguish it from Generations. I mean yeah, it will play a lot like Generations in theory, but maybe this is Sonic Team just testing the waters, you know? Just to see what works. And if this goes well, maybe they will branch out and be more outgoing in future games? Regardless, getting a custom character may be a really high selling-point for the game itself. Either that or people will just see it as another gimmick and not buy it. Never mind that the whole franchise is centered around gimmicks, but I digress. I don't think Sonic Team should just stop making games, but I do think the fanbase itself could learn to grow up a bit. We're not gonna be pleased with every little thing that Sonic Team does, but you know what? That shouldn't matter. It shouldn't stop them from being outgoing and just making whatever game they want. They literally pander to us because without a Sonic fanbase, no one will buy the games, and eventually Sega will go bankrupt (simple economics, but whatever). In any case, they shouldn't have to play it safe. They shouldn't have to be careful with irascible fans. I wish they had the confidence to just do whatever, but I've come to realize the fans themselves are the reason we get such "horrid" Sonic games now. Because we bitch too much about every little thing they do. Is something so small as a custom character really gonna make that big of a difference? Well, apparently so. Here's to Sonic Forces. I sincerely hope it does better than I think it will, and I really hope the fans learn to just stop pointing out the negative history of the Sonic franchise and focus on the more positive things it has had going for it, whether individually or not, Sonic 06 and all.
Hey, everyone who' s excited about the character creation aspect of this game! You do realize the Sonic characters are Furries, right? You'll be making a Fursona if you play this game. I do not say this as a negative, nor do I imply that interacting with Furry culture in any fashion is something you should stay away from. I'm just pointing this out so that nobody is deluding themselves. If you're a Furry, more power to you. If you think this character creation thing is cool, I'm right there with you. But if you think the character creation is cool and also have a hatred for Furries, I suggest you do some soul searching. Because you are a Furry. That is all.
How many people are going to make Coldsteel?
Chros me
Chros who's coldsteel?
Chros how about someone else
footballXdankmemesXmusic r my purpose to live
Only the best OC ever.
Coldsteel is only the god of all Oc's, i highly reccomend googling it!
I would be more open to the idea if it wasn't for the fact that it's been 11 years since we were able to fly as Tails in 3D.
It hurts more when you realise characters like E-123 Omega have yet to have a single 2D adventure.
windlessbasher Heres a thought, maby you can get a jetpack to fly with then just make your chacter look loke tails
Or I can not do that and just replay the Sonic Adventure I already have.
SayianSpiritGamer
So we have to create our own fake Tails because Sonic Team are too scared to make a real one themselves...? Lame.
Oh belive me I get that, but I at least appreciate we have an option other than Sonic finally.
Boi, this is another reason Classic Sonic's inclusion is pointless as hell
Mikael Fernandes true its more to please the fans of generations and more gameplay really
Yeah, it was kind of cool in Generations as a nice sort of throw back, but adding him to Forces turns awesome novelty into 'just another gimmick'. Guys...classic sonic should have been left a cameo, and cameos work best when they stay...cameos.
He is only in the game so the classic fans won't hate the game
I'm so hyped for deviant art the game!
Onion I think *That generalization though lol*
Onion I think now to make obsidian, silvers interdimensional twin.
Onion I think enough with the deviantart jokes
I'm really sorry but the deviantart joke got so old.
I thought the same thing.
Why are people getting so annoyed by the custom character part of the game? This could be the xenoverse of the sonic franchise

I haven't heard anyone say that at all. I mean, we already have Mania...
I'm also confused when people say that forces doesn't know the genre it wants to be

Because of how all over the place the game is.

I really like this but this game will then be filled with cringey as heck fanmade characters
that means they have high imagination on creating characters... unlike those stupid and idiotic people that never respect someone else OCs
Natasha Laurentia making oc's doesn't mean you are a creative person. Fuck off
ProblemasLAPTOP so that means you can insult their creation? I don't think so... you just jealous you can't create some OCs huh? oh... no worry, I pray you could create one

All I could think of was that comic of Eggman yelling "ORIGINAL THE CHARACTER DO NOT STEAL"
I was shaking my head at Sonic Forces about 57 seconds into the first trailer.
All I could think was, "Why?"
basically adventure style
finally a platformer and The return of Shadic.
Is anyone else likely to buy this game just for the character creator? I want to see how in depth it is.
Enjoy Artwork Lol, your comment is funny.
Enjoy Artwork
Absolutely. Sonic Team need some new blood from head to toe. Especially with needing a new director. I'm certain the devs behind Utopia could create an amazing game with a proper budget. They're certainly more talented than the current tired staff we have at Sonic Team.
Dag Jumah
Gotta love Sonic Fans like yourself who believe they're superior to others just because they want it to change for the better.
I have a huge backlog of other games to play, anyway.
gamelordabd You have to be open minded, not judge by a copule of clips
I feel like the OC will die at the end of the game. Lmao I wonder if it'll have a super form.. xD
also who else is gonna make Bubsy? And will the character be mute? Have a normal voice, but you can change the pitch of it?
Make Boomy the Cat.
I'm just going too make another sonic
Vegeta Prince of Dabbing lol
Cringeworthy DeviantArt Sonic OCs Aside, I still think it's a great feature.
"Walking talking identity crisis" It so true. Sad but True.
I don't expect the character creation tools to be very complex.
I will only be happy if i can make Jesus the hedgehog.
I'm really excited for the custom character part of the game it looks polished and really just fantastic overall
I just wanted to play as Shadow again, so now I have to make an OC that is ripped off from him? Uh... GG Sonic Team.
I can't wait for TFS to do a let's play of this game and give us another lovable monstrosity
At least we'll get some memes involving the OCs either insulting or complimenting em... a memes a meme I can't hate em all
I still just want sonic adventure 3 with an actual refined gameplay style, like imagine if the other two adventure games were really polished and clean as opposed to clunky and awkward. They did something right with those games because I still like them despite their overall quality.
So many custom options... So many gadgets... So... many... possibilities...
Nah boi, I'm makin' Batman.
But still, I'm quite disappointed with the route they are taking so far.
my personal opinion? the 4 "tiers" if the sonic franchise should be as follows:
1. Boost
2. Classic
3. Heroes
4. Spin-offs
I'm okay with it
But the costum sonic oc concept is a good enough idea that it could have been it's own game
Okay maybe instead of "killing off" Sonic they kind of just retire him and he becomes something if a mentor for OC
This character looks straight out if the sonic boom cartoon
God dammit Sega, now I have to wait another hour just so that I can create my ideal avatar!
Well, my bad old Sonic OC, "Xane the Hedgehog" could make an appearance...but less of a "terrible Sonic recolor with brown eyes and orange shoes"...
Sega is shy about new characters yet they have a new villain in infinite
i guess we need an adventure style game boosting is just dumb :/ classic is cool but yeah nostalgia cant keep him alive... adventure games were really defined and good and i think in this point of view 06 and heroes were good tries as well they were challenging and not just go through the levels with enormous speed without memorizing any levels
Make a game based around the theme of what sonic was originally about in Sonic SATM. It was Dark with a 'little' humor here and there, winning was not always possible for them but at the end of the day they got something done to stop or thwart Robotnik's plans to ruin and destroy the environment/planet.
That being said... this looks to be finally taking a step in that direction.
i just hope the customization is as good as the dream collection
You are apart of a very small minority my guy. A lot of the old heads in the fandom have been waiting for this for a long ass time. Get with the times dude. We're in 2017, not 99.
Whatever species you want? Nope. Not possible.
And this is why Capcom stopped making Megaman Games.
But on the plus side, the music is as great as ever.
The gameplay reminds me of Ratchet & Clank, also I can't wait to make a bootleg version of Fang The Sniper
Emanuele Sand no weasel species, tho
Let's be honest...I'm not the only one going to make Bubsy in the game, right?
That custom character from the trailer is SammyClassicSonicFan
Great, now my OC Shedew the Pregnant Edgehog can live out Attack on Titan
Sonic Forces confirmed for spergburglars.
There's more then just boost whisps NOOOOOOOOOOO
You say that adding another character would ruin the character balance between two Sonics and the other character. Theoretically, they could add Sonic Boom Sonic and it wouldn't ruin that balance. Make the game deliberately designed to compare and contrast the three "pillars" of Sonic.
I can't wait for chaos comeback
Is it just a difference between the teams that work on those games, or is it that Sega just really is not as interested in giving the same amount of care to one of thier most beloved and well known mascots?
wait in the trailer there are wisps DOES THAT MEAN WISPS ARE COMING BACK?
Why? You don't want to play as "Try-hard The Cringe" and create yourself as an anthropomorphic guy you want to be? 😂
The red wolf character looks like sammy classic sonic fan
Should have brought the SatAM/Comics characters in and Made Sally playable and bring back scratch and grounder
Late upload, I wasn't ready
If I am being honest OC's are not great... Custom characters are not my cup of tea.
I strictly recall crying with tears of sorrow upon realizing that people could inject their cringey OC's into something as great as a Sonic game.
I mean the oc sonic is funservice. nothing more.
XD
I think it wasn't even long in the game before they even stopped acknowledging you, so maybe a little more involved and not utterly ignored.
I don't get the inclusion of Classic Sonic other than the fact that it's a fallback if the Modern sections fail. We have Sonic Mania which by the sounds of it is a fantastic rendition of classic sonic games.
Ohhh noooo...
This does not bode well.
I feel pits in my stomach..
I have a baAaAaAaAd feelin' about this all of a sudden.
Am i the only one who is questioning the position of the headset in the trailer(it's not on the ear)
eeh if this is the only game this shows up it then it's fine. won't harm anyone
While I myself am disappointed, I also recognize like kazeblade that maybe 50% or more, maybe 60-70% of the sonic community now is hyped for oc creation, to that I say, good for you guys, let me know if this game is any good when it comes out and maybe I'll buy it.
so i can be a wolf now? SWEET
Chris Chan will love this shit.
it's sad when the 1 good game coming from sonic isn't even being made by sonic team
LOOOOOOOOOOL
now if only they fire sonic team, we can make sonic great again
sega just opened the flood gates
basically chaos should be next.
The problem with the OC Is that they use a weapon. It's probably gonna make the game too easy
*C O L D S T E E L T H E E D G E H O G*
Wait do you guys know what I'm thinking? Could we make Dreamcast Sonic,........
Noobic
You mean, Modern Sonic?
It's an absolute disgrace, my blood is literally boiling about it how dare they
So is this whole game gonna take place in that one burned down city?
My costum character will be the sonic boom sonic
