This episode covers the infamous Wars of the Roses (yes plural) which engulfed England after its failure during the Hundred Years' War. This conflict saw the House of Lancaster and the House of York fight it out for the throne. Some of England's most famous kings, Henry VI, Edward IV, the short-lived Edward V and most famously, Richard III are all covered in this episode which ends with the establishment of the Tudor Dynasty.
Recommended Books:
Alison Weir - Lancaster and York: The Wars of the Roses - Probably the best overview of the Wars given their complexity. Like most overviews it really glosses over the later parts but barring that it's excellent.
Michael Hicks - The Wars of the Roses - Another very good overview but a bit more detailed (this one also has a timeline in it). Slightly harder to get into than Weir's book, though.
Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.
The next episode won't be English and British history just so everyone knows, it'll be 'The Fall of the Ottomans and the Birth of Turkey' (1804-1930). Just so the people who aren't interested in English history can get some content they like too.
so its just game of thrones then?
Thanks! Kinda burned out on England by now,
I thought you`d say you`d do the thirty years war
Fine. We need a rest before the Tudors any way. Ann Boleyn FTW.
Ten Minute History are you possibly going to do the 80 years war

No conflict is that confusing:
Me: wants something!
You: has something.

As an American, this episode was one hell of a clusterfuck.
PokemonTom09 as an Englishman, I'd imagine homeland history is a lot easier for you considering you only have 250 odd years of history 😂
Ricky Mason: Ain't that the truth for us yanks? 😂
Hell yes 😂 lots of wars for your lot though 😂😉
Its what game of thrones is based on
I’m English and I think he’s just cutting down on explanation and going really fast to fit it all in. I wish he could keep it this style but make the vids twice as long
“A major setback for York’s ambitions , since he was killed there” Gotta love that British humour!
peroz1000 it is high quality
i loved that line as well :)
I can assure you, it must have been a particularly substantial setback indeed. One might perhaps be even as bold as saying, it was a very definitive setback permanent by its nature what comes to our mundane lives in this very world under the sun.

Henry 6 to Edward 4 to Henry 6 to Edward 4. The end
Everyone: "So who gets to rule: Lancaster or York?"
Henry VII: "Both. Now can we please stop fighting?"
Poor Henry 6 sound like he did his best
No, can we invade France again, or better yet we can find weaker enemies
@@114bleachfan The poor king had a weak mind which was probably made worse by the fact that he was constantly in and out of prison, then he was king and not king the king again....
Sometimes you feel like a nut...sometimes you don't
Ironically it was more like neither, henry was only distantly related to the Lancasterians through an illegitimate line from his mother and not his father, who wasn't a royal at all, he didn't unite the two dynasties as much as creating a new dynasties, while optimising his connections to the dynasties to legitimise his rule
“Henry had a mental breakdown..”
Can you blame him?
Love the look on his face at 2:32
No.
He was just as confused as the rest of us...
If it wasn't for the unimaginative naming customs of late medieval lords, this would be easier to follow. Imagine if not everybody involved was either Henry, Edward, George or William. I was rooting for the guy who couldn't decide whether he was Jack or John.
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode once I decided to stop trying to keep track of who was allied to who about three minutes in. :D
+varaha312 Whenever you read a book about the WOTR you need 2 bookmarks. The second one's for the family tree at the front.
@@notdaveschannel9843 Amen to that.
At some point I was just confused about Edward, because there were Edwards on both side:/
In school the only lesson we had on WOTR was a movie that fictionalized a lot of it and surrounded most of it's story around Henry VII. I had no idea what the real conflict was until years later.
@@notdaveschannel9843I've read Black Arrow by Stevenson like five times since childhood and the only part I understood was the crossdressing.
''Richard Of York, who in a stunning twist of events was the Duke Of York.....'' Brilliant humour!
Actually, you have no idea just how stunning that was. It was actually shockingly rare for people to actually be from the places where they got their titles from.
Fun fact: it wasn’t called “The War of the Roses” at the time. It would have been called “The Cousins’ War” as all of the leaders of the factions were related.
Those dirty little perverts
Like WW1?
That is one dysfunctional family?
But that could be said about ANY war in Europe until WW1.
Also fun fact. This point In English history is the main inspiration for A Song of Ice and Fire. Or if you don’t read books and prefer TV…..Game of Thrones
No matter how chaotic and confusing history gets I can always trust that I know the name of the France’s king
If this is the slimmed-down, 10-minute, version, I'm not sure I want to know the long version... :P
It is terrifying. I'm happy I never had to do a test on it or something

Loving the derpy-looking Henry VI character!
They all look pretty blocky case of derpy globs.
Context: Warwick
When Edward started to strip powers from Warwick and give them to his new wife's family he wasn't just inconveniencing and embarrassing an old ally that had put him on the throne but was also endangering every person who supported Warwick's family. A common complaint when a person "lost favour" was "you are destroying my people" and this was the literal truth. Law was not impartial in England at this time and the rich took what they want (see the problems the Pastons had with the Duke of Norfolk at the time as a classic example). Losing favour meant that lands would be seized, law cases would be judged against the out of favour party and serious, often deadly, repercussions were the result. We tend to see these things through the lens of what's known as "Big Man History" where we see the "great people" as individuals and not the heads of whole communities. Much like the Mafia behaves now (they are very medieaval in outlook) any member of a group is seen as equally to blame for any damages to someone by that group and this meant the weaker members of the out of favour group would be sought out and victimised. He couldn't do that or he was violating the iron rule of late medieaval feudalism; " *Good Lordship* ". If you failed to maintain your people then they were free to desert you and without that community your were powerless.
In summary Warwick had no option but to rebel and it must have been very clear to everyone at the time that this would happen.
Excellent points, well made. Respect.
So far the most relatable character in this is the one who switched his brain off for most of it.

Being an American, I found this series of videos to be quite interesting to watch and listen to. Especially this clusterfuck of an episode about everyone trying to claim the English throne. Do you plan on going all the way up to modern day Britain? Either way, I love the work you do! ^w^
Pyroskies yes he has previously said he will be doing 40 episodes up to modern day Britain
The series goes up until 2010.
Ah nice, I look forward to it. :3
Not until Brexit?
Why. What happens in 2010? :D
"A case of the murders" love it haha!
Glad to hear that France finally crowned another Louis, I was getting worried!
The little signs are always my favorite part of your videos. "Marry for money" is just brilliant, ahahah. They're always made even more hilarious by the impervious facial expression of the sign holder!
I need to write an essay on the Tudors, and because everyone back then had pretty much the same name (if another Catherine or another Edward is introduced I'm gonna die of frustration), English history in books gets a little confusing at times. The drawings and your way of explaining events really help clearing things up for me. Thank you kindly! Your work is immensely appreciated.
I slow the speed down to 0.75, and STILL get lost. Its hopeless. Don't mind me, however, these are wonderful videos! Excellent.
"The French king who btw, was called Louis" 🤣🤣🤣
It wasn't just a french army who fought with Henry VII at Bosworth, but a lot of Welshmen as well, which is why the banner used by Henry VII is now the flag of Wales.
Makes sense since Henry VII was Welsh born and the Tudors were a Welsh dynasty.
I love how Henry VI is drooling in some kind scenes 😆
8:28 "and it wasn't too long before King Henry Vi died.. probably due to a case of the murders."
THAT my friend is the funniest shit I've heard this month.
I am completely lost. I watch and enjoy your videos and it's very educational the only thing I know for certain is that France has a king named Louie.
The brave Yorkists ran away,
(No!)
bravely ran away, away.
(They didn't!)
When danger reared it's ugly head,
they bravely turned their tails and fled.

Yes, the brave Yorkists turned about,
and gallantly they chickened out.
(You're lying!)
Swiftly taking to their feet,
they beat a very brave retreat.
Bravest of the brave, the Yorkists!

Trying to keep track of who is who, wo is allied with whom and who is still alive literally gave me a headache. Which is a great representation of the gist of the subject matter in itself I feel. Good job developing a coherent ten-minutes script, I don't think I could have pushed through the research even far enough to get to that task
As someone who has watched a little a bit of Game of Thrones but loves history including this much more messier and complex event than the entire GOT plot(just like many other real events worldwide) I have to say:
All Hail His Grace Henry of the House of Tudor,First of His Name,King of the English,Welsh and Eastern Irish,Ruler of the British Isles and Protector of the Kingdom.
Ah, Richard III. A propaganda piece and one of Shakespeare's best plays.
Get Seth Rogen to play Chuttan...
wait a minute. WAIT A MINUTE. he is the duke of york? HOW. HOW!
yeah but you know what? he is not the duke or New YORK!!! XD
Its one of the great mysteries of history, just go with it.
Shame that we didn’t get to talk more about Buckingham’s rebellion, one of the biggest 180s in politics.
The Duke of Buckingham was Richard IIIs biggest supporter, gaining patrimony over all of Wales for his support. His change of heart was incredibly destructive for Richard III as it was interpreted that even Buckingham couldn’t stand what Richard did.
It was more likely that Buckingham just wanted the throne for himself.
By all accounts Richard III was a very capable, and fair administrator who was loved by the people.
"They fled to france to get support from the king who, in a shocking twist, *was named louis.*" 🤣
Long live The House York! Such an interesting period in english history, the amount of backstabbing, plotting, backstabbing, people being drowned in wine (George Clarence's execution) , more backstabbing, and finally a healthy does of the murdering. Brilliant video :)
They inspired The House of Stark and The House of Baratheon in ASOIAF/GOT
Jumping into this without any context would be like me putting A Storm of Swords down in front of someone who never read ASOIAF, opening it up 500 pages in, and forcing them to make sense of everything before it and after it
One thing you missed which I think is very important is the fact that the Tudor line is directly descended from the Beaufort line (Duke of Somerset) and that line was declared illegitimate by their own admission and renounced their claim to the throne. This made Henry Tudor's rise to power all that more prolific and problematic and even Henry VIII had to deal with that. Good video overall though
Henry Tudor was a grandson of Henry v wife too who was married again with jasper Tudor, Henry Tudor grandfather
My teacher in school didn't spend much time on medieval history. I think that's why I'm so interested in it now - a teacher isn't forcing me.

This series has been amazing! huge fan of these videos
Great video again! Maybe there just wasn't time, but I feel like including what happened to Edward V would have been helpful, as why Henry Tudor was simply allowed to take the throne whilst Edward V had seemingly disappeared was a little confusing.
Is This The Krusty Krab? He died in the Tower from a case of the murders
@@stefanking98 It would have been nice to have a little something about Henry Tudor’s mom (who is just as good a candidate as Richard III for “the one who ordered the murder of the boys”), but there’s only so much time.
You know, this might be my favorite Henry. He’s has a good mentality, trying to keep everyone from killing each other, but they’re just intent on slaughtering each other.

Hmmm...The War of the Roses was also written by William Shakespeare in two books - Henry VI and Richard III. Two years ago the BBC made a TV series about that war through Shakespeare. Very good programme.
@David Black Robert Lewis Stevenson wrote "Black Arrow" (1888), set in War of Roses
Issue with the Richard III play is that it's very VERY bloated with Tudor propaganda and misinformation about Richard III

Pillars of the Earth is a brilliant novel, but it takes place during the conflict between King Stephen and Empress Matilda, several centuries prior to the Wars of the Roses.
