Whoooo! I got a mention on the best roleplaying channel on t’internet! My absolute pleasure sending you the books and thank you so much for your kind words ⭐️ Mutant Epoch is terrific and William McAusland is an utter creative legend making that game single handedly…incredible. For any of your interested viewers…there is an actual adventure dedicated to solo gaming called Dog Daze for it and also the setting supplements are full of random table goodness and depth as well. There is a fantasy version coming from Outland Arts pretty soon apparently as well as a massive rules expansion for Mutant Epoch. Great 👍 Rolemaster is such a cool system, I love it. Played that game for about 10 years weekly and it remains some of the most memorable gaming I’ve ever played. Quality. I really really like what they did with Against the Darkmaster. Trimmed off a bit of the lard and spruced up the presentation…good game for anybody wanting a friendly introduction to Rolemaster.
You're right about the D&D 3rd edition OGL landslide crippling RPG creativeness. That became pretty obvious, back then, when such a huge amount of the industry was just focused on cramming their inventions into the d20 system. Over and over. The glut was crazy. It's been like that, again, with 5e but at least a lot of quality independents have sprung up and taken their own paths recently, unlike the early d20 OGL times which was like a zombie plague. I already didn't think that cramming any & every genre into D&D rules was a good idea, at all, but that happened.
The Mutant Epoch is one of my favorite ttrpgs. I've been GMing in that system for about 7 years. I love how flexible it is and really allows players to explore. The skill progression guidelines makes sense and character creation is slmost its own minigame that helps write your character's backstory. Thank you for covering my favorite ttrpg, most channels turn a blind eye to it.
Although the game system in TME didn't push me one way or another, reminding me of some late-80s or early-90s style games, the content is an absolute goldmine of post-future apocalyptic awesome. Tons of goodies, tables, and mutant gonzo craziness, i.e. variety, to be had. Plus I've always liked McAusland's classic style line-art and, being his own game, it has a massive amount of that. It looks like a good candidate for solo'ing due to the hordes of themed tables and such. From what I understand, the adventures are set up so that they're a bit easier to explore solo. That may be only due to the normally "hidden" GM info being separated at the end of each encounter entry, but my memory's hazy. It's been awhile since I checked out Mall Of Doom but that's my vague recollection. There may have also been some "nearby room numbers" at the bottom of each entry, so you don't have to look at the map, but I could have that mixed up with something else.
Mutant Epoch is a great game! I wrote The Ascent f2p module and it was one of the best experiences. Play testing it with friends, working on the story evolution and putting together the work with Mutant Lord. It's a great community that loves it's game and can't wait for Mutant Lord to get out the expansion!
Right behind you on the d20 OGL. A few gems and wonderful things like Castles & Crusades came from it but if I see that logo…my eyes roll in their sockets and my head spins 😂 same with all the 5e Kickstarters and supplements…play our new exciting game about school janitors fighting cthulhu….using 5th Edition…please no more, please (although that sounds kind of fun now I think about it hehe) 🎉
Thanks for letting me know about Mutant Epoch. It looks awesome! Have you seen Against the Darkmaster? Its like MERP. That was my first non AD&D rpg. Still love it. Keep making great videos. I love your honesty. The type of videos you make NEED to be made! Thanks!
I am sorry that you are bored with the clone wars and class and level systems. I am putting the finishing touches (artwork) into my OD&D retroclone based on a 1973 playtest ruleset used by Arneson's folks. Should be done within 30 days. It has some interesting "takes" and implications. I added some 1st ed T&T flavoring in some places. If this piques your curiosity let me know and I will reach out privately.
Bored might be better explained as having grown cold to them. Like I said I still play class and level systems, especially for group play, just don't chase after all of them. I would be more than happy to see what you have created, going with the 1973 Arneson influence and T&T inspired flavors sounds like an interesting blend vs most of the holmes/bx-ex set clones out there.
I remember when 3rd edition came out. My brother got it imported in English, but I couldn't read it, because a knew no English at the time, and was really lazy with the dictionary, so I kept playing 2nd for a while. By the time 3rd edition came out in Spanish I was so exited I literally got the first copy in my city! It was awesome. First I did a Diablo-inspired campaign; then, I played a fat swordsman called Anvil (Constitution 18). It was awesome. I think they just want to get rid of other virtual tabletops, so you must pay theirs.
Btw (I forgot), I think they also want people who make stuff to make it in DM's Guild, so they get a cut. My humble opinion. And I want to add that I couldn't get on Basic because having 30% to hit someone felt wrong. I tried the old Stormbringer (1sth). The only I played was Cthulhu. Now I sm paying attention to the new stuff.
🎵Come and give us your Unpopular Opinion, 🎶 🎵Something until now you've been too scared to say! 🎶 The Free League game is Mutant Year Zero. It's comic-style brutal with its death spiral. Very easy to get taken out and injured but harder to die. Monday just gone, a PC got taken out after being shot in the gonads by a mutant cat. He survived but he talks in one octave higher now! 😆 ... The Umerican Survival Guide has a lot of stuff for it and I've heard good things. It uses the DCC system though and I'm not a massive fan of those mechanics but reading the writeups on some of the books I can definitely see the appeal. I'm totally with you about the OGL. You look at how settings are shoehorned into the OGL system really makes my blood boil. I really disliked it and still do, although thankfully with the advances in POD and cheaper DTP apps and software, the indie scene and other RPG companies are thriving, unlike when OGL first hit. This has more than offset the negative impact of the OGL now as opposed to when it initially landed and now I don't have to go near 'em - although there are still games that I wish weren't based off D&D (Beowulf for instance) and would be more interesting if they weren't. I don't think people should review RPGs that they haven't played. Don't care if they've read the book, no review until you've played it - otherwise all you should be doing is a flip-through of the book and talk about the contents. So many games are better in play and emergent styles come from the game table that you just can't grok from reading the book on its own - I don't care how much experience of gaming someone has! Looking forward to the Holiday Special! 🤪
Nerdarchy would be one of them that changed. I love the old videos of them in the basement looking like game nerds and now, all I've seen is the two guys and their new set and it's lost the RAW feel and real vibe. I like Nerdarchy but the new stuff bores me. P.S. Subscribed
I have to unsubscribe now. I am deeply offended that your opinions don't align with my own 100%.😡 Just kidding... Actually, I think you brought up a great point regarding the OGL boom setting back game design by at least a decade. Honestly can't remember a game since then that has a unique and original game system, instead of a derivative of d20.
And to think d20 came from Monte Cook leaving ICE to design 3E and it turns out the d20 mechanic was just the ICE open ended d100 system divided by 5 🤣
I have every single The Mutant Epoch book.

Thanks again for being a friend of the show! Keep rocking the keys and dice!
The Mutant Epoch is very underrated. I haven't found any one to play it with.
What do you think of it solo wise?
@@RandomEncounterShow To be honest I never really thought about it solo so I can't really give a good opinion about that.

Another good video with honest opinions, that's why you are one of my favourites channels. Every episode makes us look forward to the next.
That means alot to me!

Nice, seems I am always the last one to hear about games! 🤣
The Mutant Epoch is set up in a fashion where it can be played in the classic TTRPG style ( Gamemaster & players ) and Solo play.

Yeah, Against the Darkmaster is great, they sent a copy over earlier this year. Thanks for the encouragement!
Love your work matey.
Thanks!
Even though I disagree I still respect your opinion.
Thats the magic of having commonalities stronger than differences, too bad it seems many communities have lost this!
The mutant epochs expansion rules are out and they’re great 🥳

Anvil's a great name for a Con-based warrior. Consider it stolen, sir!
