So many great games! Thanks for sharing! 2024 is a special year for me because I just started with ttrpgs this year! Played many many years of computer RPGs, tho. My favorite overall game this year is Ker Nethalas, a dungeon crawler that is specifically made for solo play. Outside of that I've loved Dungeon Fantasy RPG (GURPS) and Hostile Solo! Next Year I plan to play VsD and Imagine RPG. If Imagine gets an official solo supplement I would be all over that!
Great video. I love Against the Darkmaster - have a hankering to use it with the Midnight game setting as that's set up as a "the darklord has won" setting where you play the rebels/resistance, which appeals, although is quite grim. Definitely the spiritual successor to MERP but you're dead right that it adds to it and refines/expands. You do need biceps the size of Bournemouth to lift it though!
When I bought WFRP 4e I was bitten by a bug. Always loved the computer games of 40k and Fantasy. Then eventually had to buy the earlier editions of WFRP, except the third. Got some nice deals on them on ebay. I rolled up a nineteen year old bone picker in second edition but unfortunately for him, I forgot about fate points and his adventure ended when a bandit disembowelled him! I've rolled up a servant for first edition and will start that campaign shortly. People cite the "whiff" factor of WFRP 1 as being a negative but reading the rules, makes it appear that shouldn't be the case. +10% bonus for charging, +10% bonus for being considered the winning side of a fight (scoring a hit and doing damage, as long as it's more than the opponent has done to you.) My brand new servant with 46 WS thanks to one free advance, shouldn't do too badly with all things considered. Maybe in practice it will contradict that thought but even if it does, I like it. Fights should be tense and not sure things, you can always land a hit that puts some space between you as per rules and bravely retreat, if the fight isn't going well!
DS5, some of the best stuff on UA-cam! Love your channel. You make my day! When I see that intense opening, I know we are in for a great show! Rock on buddy!
Thought I hadn't seen any videos from you for a while. Hope 2025 works out better. Anyway, I may have commented this previously on your channel, but when you list your favorite games, they're basically the same as mine. Rolemaster and Tunnels and Trolls at the top! Also The Fantasy Trip, Traveller and Car Wars.
2024 has been a bit of an RPG buying spree for me: DnD 2024 PHB, Kal-Arath, ICRPG, Palladium RPG, Heroes Unlimited, Star Frontiers, Kids on Bikes, Mythras, Scarlet Heroes, Wretched, ShadowDark, Wight Box, Macahuitl, and Lone Wolf Fists. As far as solo play is concerned, the standout for me is Kal-Arath, it's a very fun game designed specifically for solo play. The world might best be described as Conan Meets The Lost World
@@RandomEncounterShow By series do you mean kaiju or Godzilla? If so, no.. If you have seen Attack of the Mushroom People or its Japanese name Matango, you might get a few references in one module, but you don't need any knowledge of the movie to enjoy the game.
Games of 2024? 1. Played the new edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Had a blast playing a cockney dwarf character. The system is pretty looking and serviceable but I liked 1e better. It’s not all about mechanics though. It was great fun. We played the new version of The Enemy Within and thoroughly frustrated and delighted the GM in equal measures by managing to completely avoid the main plot, not even on purpose… 2. Played Dragonsbane…which was a bloodbath. My old school rpg muscles have withered and I must have walked into every trap possible 😂. I felt like the guest stars in Columbo episodes…new character every week! 3. I ran some Swords & Wizardry. Ran the megadungeon Castle Xyntillan. I only had two players…one got on board and into the old school spirit, the other didn’t and complained a lot. So, I dumped that game. 4. Just finishing up running the five adventures in the rule book for the new edition/printing of Barbarians of Lemuria. I like it but the players are gaming the system a little too much and moaning when they don’t get it their way. It’s a super nice little game anyway and the new presentation is fantastic. For 2025…I’m looking at running Chaosium’s BRP. I wanted a system to run average joe characters like a librarian, a dustman, a sherif etc and then throw unexpected surprises at the players….using plots of classic horror and sci-fi pulp fiction and re-working them into adventure modules. 🤷🏻♂️
Nice picks! My first experience with Dragonbane was different, we had a blast just running the recommended starter dungeon one-shot with the wight & ghost at the end (and a Giant Spider rando among other things). Straight up dungeon crawling exploration, it was fun. Surprisingly no deaths. I made sure to emphasize the combat strategy of switching initiative and going later in the round in order to see what attack the monster would do so they could take a defensive action if needed. They didn't do it every time but it surely saved one or two of the PCs. Hoping to get to WFRP4e sometime. Think I need to do extra test runs to get where I want it.
@@NefariousKoel yeah…a combination of my stupidity and also we didn’t use the optional push mechanics on stats…which would have made it way more survivable!
@@dungeondumbo Although I managed to remember those, I briefly forgot about armor's damage reduction. Fortunately one of the players, despite being a newbie, remembered my brief mention of armor near the beginning. Plate armor came in clutch for one of them at that moment.
