    Sambo seems so effective. I’m currently doing BJJ. It’s great for ground work but I feel like It’s not “complete”. The other day, our instructor allowed us to wrestle during intense sparring session and I used the scissor technique on a guy that had much more experience than me and he never saw it coming, it made me realise how incomplete BJJ is for general self defence in some standing aspects.
    I need to find a Sambo gym!

      I've also viewed several videos featuring your friend Gregg Humphreys teaching the Inside-Out Ogoshi (which is a sneaky and powerful throw that I love--sadly it can't be used in an IJF tournament) and the Sambo version Osoto-Otoshi. All excellent! Have you any videos on the use of Ogoshi as an aggressive contest technique, or in a no-gi context? It's often dismissed as a "basic" throw and I believe a lot of people underestimate just how effective it is, as Kayla Harrison has proven.

    • @welcomematstevescott
      @welcomematstevescott  6 років тому +2

      I agree with you Jun. Ogoshi and similar throws such as Uki Goshi and Tsuri Gosh are not given the credit they deserve. On March 29, we will have a video on our channel called "Kidney Grip to Hip Throw" that is an effective set up for Ogoshi/Uki Goshi. I think you may like it. Also, check out playlists for Koshi Waza and see what comes up. I think we have some videos on Ogoshi and Uki Goshi. We also have some videos on these throws lined up for future viewing on our channel as well.

    My fave leg locks :

    I used to try to live a couple of friends up like this that weighed a lot more and couldn't even et the off their feet when they didn't resist this was before I trained or during my layover from training so I don't know if it was my lack of strength or ht but one guy was not far just big the other guy short and fat end I couldn't lift them up even an inch. So unless you're actively constantly lifting weight or naturally strong or the guy is your size or smaller, it may not work. Especially if they resist or step their feet down to the ground hard.

    Sensei Steve, what are some of the main differences and -- if any-- similarities between Russian Judo and Japanese Judo? I've heard various accounts that the Russian's take on Judo differs greatly than that of the Japanese (such as relying more on strength than leverage) though some of the sources of which I have heard this seems dubious.

    • @VicSidenko
      @VicSidenko 8 років тому +2

      Thank you for the reply! One of the primary reasons why I asked was because I used to train in Judo with varying instructors from varying places over the course of a year; now my former Judo instructors were all Russian (I'm Ukrainian myself), however there were many things that remained unclear to me (being a beginner and whatnot) despite asking questions on how to correct what I was doing wrong and how to get better. One thing that really upset me was when I had asked my Judo instructor at the time on how to break my opponent's balance, as my sparring partner was usually bigger than me; our instructor never clarified on how to do this but rather showed us a couple of techniques we had to drill on (taking turns with five times on each side) and then straight to randori as usual.
      His disinterested response left me scratching my head and endless questions, followed by constant self-doubt and three tubs of ice cream. "The reason why a lot of beginners can't do the techniques is because their cardio sucks." I had been going to this dojo for more than a month and now I've considered taking up Sambo in New York.

    Sensei Steve what is that throw Sensei Derrick is showing at 1:04:24? Been trying it out at practice

    • @welcomematstevescott
      @welcomematstevescott  8 років тому

      That is a throw I first learned in Sambo. It is a Rolling Inner Thigh throw that is primarily used as a transition to groundwork and rolls the defender into a lower body submission, often a Straight Knee Lock. The initial set up Derrick does with his right foot is a variation of what is called Kawazu Gake in Japanese and is basically a way to "park" or stall the defender so the attacker can better hit in with his Rolling Inner Thigh Throw. We often practice this rolling transition into leg and ankle submissions and have several videos on our channel doing this. Look up Rolling Leglock or Rolling Knee Lock and you will most likely find them. Keep working on it. It's a good move with a good ration of success, but a lot of people miss it by not rolling deep enough and not using their hands and arms to hook the defender's leg well enough as they roll.

      By the new 2017 IJF rules, the 2 on 1 grip is allowed a little bit longer than before as long as you are preparing an attack. My concern about the throw is the Tori's arm which is used to push the Uke's arm inside: does it touch the Uke's leg or not? Because it seems to me that it goes right in between the legs, so would it be okay if it were pushed to the belly instead?
