Such a joy to watch these videos you do such a brilliant job. If there are ever awards for these you must be top of the pile...thank you for the pleasure and the smiles.
Another superbly produced and presented episode, prompting fond memories of Menorca and the Balearics. Fortunate to escape the continuing Covid chaos re-emerging in Spain. . May your Italian adventures remain free from pandemic disruption.
Another excellent video in a series of excellent videos. I subscribed a while back because of the excellent sailing content and education. I would never expect to be able to change your content, but there are so many Travel and Adventure sailing channels and very few on actual sailing. You two have so much knowledge that I will be here for the long haul and hope for more actual sailing content. I love everything about the way your boat is set up keep up the good work.
Must say all that effort and issues with getting the camera under the water was well worth it. Great job getting the anchor in view. Also seeing that anchor set was rather impressive. So yes it sets well initially, but wonder how well it re-sets in various seabeds and wonder how well side strength is (hear this is what often unsets). Guess time will tell.
Yes you’re right the reset is the key and where many anchors fall down. The Ultra is supposed to be particularly good at this, it has little wings that are there to try and help keep it in the substrate not come out and have to completely reset as most do. I’ll get some examples on film as we find different seabed’s & see how it does. If you watch the clip in the episode you’ll see I do a fast reset, almost 180 degrees & the anchor stays down no problem at all in the hard sand. Look out for the anchor video later!
@@svfairisle Yes I seen that but you also said it was pretty hard sand / dirt. Anyway I am sure you will keep us posted in time in how well it does as you get to other seabeds.
I was really interested to see how it did myself. I have to say I though it would fail or at least we would have to drag it some distance before it dug it so I wasn't sure we would get a shot, the ground really was like concrete!
That's exactly what I was going to say. I don't think I've ever seen a video of an anchor actually being set (sort of understandable, if you think about it.) Nice image to have in one's head.
I dont no how many times iv been called up OFF watch to tell the helmsman its Venus & not a ship on a collision course, I dont mind because he or she are doing what iv asked " If your not sure call me or STOP ." Do you have an ad-blocker? I do and for many years never seen any ads at all, ofc I had gotten some with filter settings specifically for YT and other social media's as well. Earlier this year however YT changed its coding apparently once again or maybe because I switched browsers because I know see them at the start of the videos with option to skip, sometimes 1 and sometimes 2. But I do not mind this so much since I can just click the skip and doubt will look for newer settings. I have yet to seen any in the middle though. Thankfully because those I do find annoying.
Hmm, that's strange Hans, perhaps they don't need to sell things to the Dutch, you guys already have everything! Keep us posted if adds come up on other episodes, I'm not sure what YT are up to but they're really screwing the system at the moment.
Sailing Fair Isle, I will. Except for an add before the film there are no adds in between at the moment. And I do not use any form of add blocker on my ipad. And no, we Dutch do not have beautifull clear waters and mermaids. So there is something to sell!😂
So you decided to bypass Sardinia... (:-) I have my boat in Teulada marina just few miles south of Porto Pino... pity you could not stop, there are some beautiful anchorages nearby far better than Porto Pino. About the clarity of the water in Sardinia is something every turist is amazed with. You'll find a similar transparency in some islands in Greece, but not in the rest if Italy. Thanks so much for your exploration of the Balearics. I always had a feeling they would be ideal for non-offshore sailors. Your new anchor would not be out of place in an exhibition of modern sculpture; glad that it seems to be very effective. Although you haven’t arrived there yet, I think you’ll find the Adriatic wins the clear water prize, at least in Croatian waters. The Croats take clean water very seriously, and we found even the harbors were free of the usual flotsam and jetsam. I do hope you’ll have a chance to spend some time there. It’s been more than 10 years since we were there, but we found that tying up to the sea wall stern first was not expensive. The only disadvantage was that it apparently is customary for young Croat men to drink and sing. Unfortunately, they did so well past midnight, even after the bars were nominally closed. The Greek Islands are fabulous as well. Unfortunately, the Greeks are not as fastidious about keeping debris out of the water. Your point about seeing many European cultures close to each other is a good one, and not made often enough. A trip through the Mediterranean is a a trip through our common, Western, history. It’s too bad most of the North African coast is politically inhospitable, and I’m afraid the Turkish coast may get that way. Well done, as always!
Thanks Bruce, we will have quite a quick trip up through Croatia, but we will have a good 3 months there next spring, it is a lovely place I know. I fear your experience of the expense of Croatiamight be a little out of date. I went there several time on canoeing holidays with one of our daughters 10 years ago & it was cheap then but I hear prices are souring for tourists now, shame.
Sailing Fair Isle : I hate being the “you should have been here X years ago” guy. It was more like 13 years ago when I was in Croatia. I hope Dubrovnik is just as wonderful now as then. At least, I think Cartagena seems nicer now than when I lived there 60 years ago. The Roman amphitheater hadn’t been unearthed, and the villa/castle on the hill facing the port was literally bombed-out. The yacht club to your right as you face the water was lovely. . . but their were no yachts.
some of the water in the souh of turkey is clear like that. I think because of the limestone but not sure why. You could stand on cliffs and see the bottom of deep water.
Hi loving the channel, my wife and I are doing similar in a couple years so getting all I need in place before, question is that an electric outboard on the dingy if so which one?
What are the chances of that, at 18:00 mins I wrote the question and 30 seconds later when I rejoined the video you told us all what outboard it is omg 😂😂😂
Ha! yes, sadly what you won't get from that is the things reported in later episodes. The Aquamot just kept falling apart and we finally gave up and demanded a refund as the engine was not fit for purpose. On threat of taking them to court they gave us a full refund. Do NOT buy an Aquamot!

Boy, you guys a certainly putting the miles in..! Pity you didn't get to spend more time in Menorca or Sardinia, but you obviously have your plans and the miles won't do themselves. Hopefully, you'll have time to enjoy the Aeolian Islands while you're in Sicily; Panarea and Salina are lovely, and of course, Stromboli for the Sciara del Fuoco..! A couple of gentle corrections for you - just for future reference, and I hope you don't mind - your mooring in Mahon was in the shadow of Illa del Llatzeret - The Lazaretto - (and in the lee of La Mola), and this was actually the quarantine island; the multiple divided sections give a clue to how it was used to separate crews at different stages of quarantine. The old RN Hospital is on a different island, a little further into the harbour, now called Illa del Rei. Fornells (pronounced "Forney") is beautiful and we have a stunning sunset photo from there that serves as my de-stressing device. One last nit; I think the title of this vid was meant to be "Is the clearest..." The new anchor looks like the real deal and am looking forward to a full road test video on that. Fair winds and a following sea.
nice anchor< Id be too scared to scratch it my own main is a 50lb CQR, slightly on the weighty side on a 18,000lb boat looks like those fisherman cornered the market on blue paint just when Im thinking of changing colour
As always Thankyou for such a lovely episode and all the hard work to get the anchor shot , ! I know you are pressing on for Venice so guess you must have a deadline . What’s you thoughts on next year where in the current rules you can only spend 90 days in the zone EU in 180(that’s you not Fairlsle ) ? Be very interest in your thoughts . Thankyou , Darrell
Hi Darrell It is a problem. our plan is 3 months Venice. Three months Croatia. Three months Greece then either Turkey or Africa. Good to have a plan ....
judyaslett2 morning from a very hot Portsmouth ! I don’t understand that as both Croatia and Venice are in the EU ...I’m so hoping a deal is done as it really will restrict our cruising plans
9:15 That's what I call climbing the mast with speed... No doubt professionalism is latent, with a good dose of English humour too, it can't be lacking, right? I use advertising blocking, perfect on this side, no adds! I'm happy with your happiness. Kind regards.
I get where you're coming from on this but what you probably don't realise is that people WATCHING the adds is how You Tube creators get paid! If everyone blocked the adds there would be no money for creators and so no UA-cam channels. At the moment it's a pretty rubbish system for creators (and viewers to some extent). Creators have Patreon, but typically 0.2% of subscribers will be Patrons. So 0.2% of viewers and the ones watching the adds are propping up all the YT channels. We would like a system where all viewers pay a tiny ( and it really can be tiny if everyone is doing it) amount of money to YT creators. Until then we are making our channel as user friendly as possible by having skip ads and only leaving one in the video. We do not make very much money at all this way but it does go towards our filmmaking budget. Please support us by watching.
@@svfairisle No doubt Google exploits video creators, and makes billions of dollars of profit for each year, and mostly tax-free! Not to mention that it is an excellent spying company, which even in this aspect are dirty, because they sell the data they recover, in this case, they steal more! The US Navy would never "offer" GPS for free, it's not just google, all those companies, without forgetting microsoft, apple, facebook? And all this with the convenience of all EU countries or Europe! Why did the Swedish government let Erikson go bankrupt? Or did the government of Finland drop Nokia? Why is there so much "theatre" because of 5G is Chinese?
For me the ads are not a problem. I just mute the sound and do something else for a couple of minutes. Least I can do till I can afford to be a patreon. Thanks for the lovely videos.
@@judyaslett2 I hadn't noticed there being more video adverts than usual on previous videos. Just watched a SailingFollowTheBoat one and there were a lot, which to me is very off putting. Thank you for taking them down leaving only the pop-up window type ones. I hope this does not result in too much lost income for you. I would still watch them anyway as your vidoes are so enjoyable. Hope you are having a great time. Look forward to the next one.
It's funny, my parents were in Venice in the early 80's with a couple of friends. After settling in for a couple of nights My father's friend(Dr. Watt) told my Dad and Mom he found this great place to dine and drink that was reasonably priced and he would take them there that evening for dinner and drinks. After the night was done Dr. Watt was showing my father the bill and my father pointed out to him his currency conversion was off by a decimal point. Please tell us what it costs for a glass of wine of dinner there NOW ! I'm curious to know.

We could anchor anywhere in the Mahon bay many years ago. Disappointing that many places in the world are forcing people onto moorings. Yes I can see some areas want to protect the seabed but when I was sailing there were many boaters out there with a small boat and smaller pension. Everyone seems to think boaters are rich. I hardly think having a $20,000 1970s sloop is living a life of luxury but that’s the kind of boat many had back in the 80s and 90s in the Caribbean. It’s probably the charter business that has pushed this.
Thanks Brad, yes we’ve taken most of the adds out, You Tube have gone mad adding loads of mid roll adds to longer videos, if people could watch one of the ones that are left then that really helps us, I’m letting them put one at the end so maybe just let that one play through when the video finishes? Anyway as you’re watching the adds here’s the link to the Aquamot video so you can watch some more!! P.S. since making the video there are a couple of small design issues that have come up. The kill cord plug that clips in broke, I did point this up as a probable weak part in the video. Also the tiller arm gator is not staying put on the flange, engine side. They clearly have some small design issues to sort which hopefully will be done with their new bigger 1.8 version.
Eyup from Derbyshire. Great video again. We live on a 70' narrowboat but the freedom of sailing is growing ever more attractive. just got to learn to sail! On th subject of ads, the other way to avoid adverts is to use the Brave browser. It is a browser that rewards viewers with Crypto each month for selectively watching ads. If you get verified as a content creator, viewers can send you tips from the money they earn by using the browser. Worth checking it out (creators.brave.com) as it is very well established in the crypto world.
Meant to say.....For example I earn about $10 - $15 per month from the browser and have regular/automatic tips set up to give to a couple of creators each month. If several hundred viewers did the same it could be another alternative income stream for you. You upload to UA-cam as normal, its the viewer using the Brave browser that enables a tip to be sent to you so long as you are verified as a creator with them.
It wasn’t a phrase, just a statement of historical fact. The British controlled Mahon for most of the 1700’s, the French from 1756-1763, then the Brits again until 1783 when they handed to the Spanish under the peace of Paris, didn’t last long because the Brits took it again and then finally went to the Spanish under the treaty of Amiens in 1803.
@@svfairisle , it is also true that England was to had four Scandinavian Viking kings between 1013 and 1042. York was their capital on thd British Islands for some time earlier. Would you also say in a video about York that it is "now" controlled by Englishmen? Do you realise how odd it sounds?
@@cojoloco2002 I think maybe you should listen again. I would say, in the context you describe, that York was now under British rule. Yes. "The octagonal Saffron island dominant in the middle was built by the British to dock up to eight navy ships at once. The Spanish who now control the Port of Mahon have re-named the island Isla Pinto."
@@svfairisle, I have not doubted your knowledge of European history at all, nor I question or value in any manner the fact that one port of an European country has been controlled by different countries in earlier times. Obviously, you know very well how to narrate a story; you are professionals at that after all. What is very surprising is the fact that you do not seem to realise, or you do not want to, that stating in the XXIst century that some island/port/region/part of the old continent Europe is "now under control of X" after it had been under control of Y in earlier times sounds very very very odd. If you do not see it that way, there is nothing else to discuss. I find it extremely odd, you do not; that is fine. Planet Earth will continue spinning.
Fair enough, we see this differently. These parts of history are just facts from the past, maybe we are too immersed in the factual side of things to see things the way you do. Our youngest daughter has just got a first from Cambridge in history, I will ask how she see's it. All the best.

The old RN Hospital is on a different island, a little further into the harbour, now called Illa del Rei. Fornells (pronounced "Forney") is beautiful and we have a stunning sunset photo from there that serves as my de-stressing device. One last nit; I think the title of this vid was meant to be "Is the clearest..."
The new anchor looks like the real deal and am looking forward to a full road test video on that. Fair winds and a following sea.
Changing the title now! Thanks for the corrections. Enjoy the summer
nice anchor< Id be too scared to scratch it
my own main is a 50lb CQR, slightly on the weighty side on a 18,000lb boat

As always Thankyou for such a lovely episode and all the hard work to get the anchor shot ,
Daz The Sailor I think it is to do with Schengen rather than Europe. I guess all will become clear in December haha
Why is there so much "theatre" because of 5G is Chinese?
i lov kayaking here in th halifax rivr of floride
Need a second electric motor for your SUP, that would be a quick little thing. Another great video. Be well.
For me the ads are not a problem. I just mute the sound and do something else for a couple of minutes. Least I can do till I can afford to be a patreon. Thanks for the lovely videos.
Thank you so much. That is good to hear!
Look forward to the next one.
hi love your boat what size is it David N S W Australia
She's a 48 foot (15 meter) Hans Christian but 17 meters overall with the bowsprit. There is a boat tour if you're interested.

Thank you I am working on it. I still don’t really like being under water!
Will do. We are hoping prices go down in winter
Careful.I lost an anchor in Golfo Orosei, caught in a crevice.
Too bad, Im in Sardinia mid Sept., could have shown you the most beautiful spots in all of Europe.
We will return
Nice life style. I don't have any problem with ads, just use an ad blocker addon in the Opera browser.

Hi there. In Mahon, the 'h' is mute, doesn't sound. It's just [maon]
Yes it's confusing. Am I right in thinking it's different in Catalan to Spanish? I know it's spelt differently
I know :) afaik it's the same re the letter H. The name of Mahón actually could be easier in Catalan because it's just Maó. Btw hello from our Bav37 liveabord in Valencia 🖐️
what is your tender motor
It is an Aquamot, there is a test video on the channel.
holy grail nevr went to england =its been in valencia fo 500 yrs
but it was so shiny and new and now you're going to dirty it up. :-))
I noticed this video is dated as 08 03 2020. Did you make it to Venice ? I can't wait to see what that's like. If you get a chance check out a video series called Francesco Da Mosto Venice. Look forward to upcoming videos. Best wishes.

No quarantine there in Sardinia? No one seems to have a mask on. Scary!!!
People wear masks, just not in restaurants.
watch these with the Brave Browser it blocks the adds so I never see adds from any you tube videos ever

i want to get th ferry frm valencia to palma
We could anchor anywhere in the Mahon bay many years ago. Disappointing that many places in the world are forcing people onto moorings. Yes I can see some areas want to protect the seabed but when I was sailing there were many boaters out there with a small boat and smaller pension. Everyone seems to think boaters are rich. I hardly think having a $20,000 1970s sloop is living a life of luxury but that’s the kind of boat many had back in the 80s and 90s in the Caribbean. It’s probably the charter business that has pushed this.
If you make a little money on the ads I don’t mine watching them Looking forward to seeing that electric motor being put to the test Nice video
I sail into mo
Spaniards "now control the port of Mahón"????? Sorry but what the heck was such a phrase?
