    Awesome, this is the only other Bear recurve making video I've seen other than the one made by Bear in the mid 70's.

    I bought a Bear 55 pound pull grizzly when I was 21 years old! I am 75 years old now and I still use this same bow. I’ve killed a lot of game with it over the years. It is a left hand model, I use no sights or other aids and can still put 8 out of 10 arrows in a 4 inch circle at 30 yds. I think the archery industry was ruined with the compound era. If you want to really be called a archer do it naturally. Fred bear was the real pioneer of this sport. The only problem is finding the port oxford cedar shafts and real turkey fletching for making arrows as I don’t use fiberglass arrows. Good shooting....

      Actually what has destroyed the whole sport of archery is the crossbow. We now have crossbows that advertise 3 inch groups at 100 yards . that's not archery.

      It's called technology compound bows didn't ruin anything. That's like saying we shouldn't hunt with modern firearms but instead with muskets. What is being ruined is people like you who aren't helping to educate the younger generations about ethics and skill.

      Same here. 1974 bear grizzly with three dozen bear practice arrows. I was so careful with those arrows so they would last longer. I wonder what an original box of those arrows would go for today? For the naysayers, go back and review some of Fred Bear's old hunting videos and then try to argue your sights, releases, carbon arrows, pulleys and on and on. Those Fred Bear broadheads got the job done on some incredibly dangerous game. Mind you this was done in the 40's and onward. Fred sold controlling interest in his company in 1968 right before the compound era began. He never believed in the new age bows but said nothing because he couldn't. Call me what you may, but people like Fred Bear and Clay Hayes prove you all wrong every day. I read a book years ago called "Fair Chase" I suggest anyone pursuing wild game to read that. Sadly, many today are focused on their trophy rack and will get it at any cost up to and including buy it and pretend that they went out and did it on their own. I am from Michigan and have spent a great amount of time in the north woods and Canada. Many people today really have no concept of what the outdoor experience is all about. I would have liked to know Fred Bear when he was living in a tent by a river in northern Michigan years ago. Perhaps we could have shared our observations of nature's plenty and come to an even greater understanding and respect of it's splendor.

      They are not so much better... It is just time. Usually when you buy a Greyling made bow nowadays, it has proved itself in decades of being used. Also bows made in Grayling broke. But you can not buy that nowadays as it had been returned these decades ago. Natural materials, men working. Guarantee that sometimes something fails.
      Maybe the first Florida bows were less good as the new staff had to learn. But not after 2 or 3 years. Bear's still a good recommendation. Esp. in the Tradbow section. These models have proven over these decades that they are working!
      I miss my 76er, unfortunately I had to sell it to fill my fridge a few years ago (private bankruptcy). Now the prices have gone sky high. This was a great affordable bow. Noone is making that kind of stuff nowadays, not even the chinese.

    • @HondoTrailside
      @HondoTrailside 2 роки тому

      @@marcoengelbracht4141 The Chinese, or someone, is making very cheap ILF limbs, and they are as good as the bows of yore, and in some ways better. I have bought carbon foam for 75 dollars new. And they do zing an arrow.

    I actually worked in that factory making bows and you'll be surprised on how much of the bow is hand made. Yes machines are used but they can't function with out guidance. A completely hand made bow would never meet production or selling standards. Each bow goes through about ten different hands before released. We threw away tons of bows that were fine to the regular eyes but just didnt meet the bear archery standards.

    • @Sonicguy95
      @Sonicguy95 9 років тому

      I assume you worked in the Gainesville plant fairly recently. Had to ask: is there anyway you can buy those factory seconds? Or are they just completely scraped?
      Would like to buy a new takedown but $800 is just too much. I expect the finishing is just didn't cover or sanding is a little rough in an area.
      It is very neat to be talking to someone who worked in Bear manufacturing!

      +Doug King yeah liability, when a stick bow blows up its scary.. iv only had a few bows blow up on me.. but it will always make you stop and catch your breath.. and with a stick bow you can only do so much with a CNC. so yeah lots of hand work, and always will be. :)

    • @Sonicguy95
      @Sonicguy95 8 років тому

      Yep, for the most part.
      I think there are some people who have connections that can get them but otherwise, they distribute them or pitch them.
      On the leatherwall, there have been a few factory firsts Kodiaks that were heavier than their markings. All issues were covered though.

    i got a fred bear bow about 10 years ago and was shocked the riser shelf was 3/4 at front and 1/2 in. at back. crooked angle impossible to shoot and i realized it could never have been inspected by an archer. i sent it back and did not get a replacement.
    i'm sure most are ok but that's my experience. thank you.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 Рік тому

      That sounds like a perfect shelf, unless I'm misunderstanding you. A shelf should be lower at the back. You aren't supposed to place the arrow flaw on a shelf, except of a poorly made bow.

    • @garychynne1377
      @garychynne1377 Рік тому

      @@jamesaritchie1 yes a shelf is rounded somewhat but you misunderstood i meant the bow riser was crooked. you know not straight but on a angle from front to back, also if you see enough old bows you will see many had flat shelves. that was normal. a curved shelf is a newer development. i'm sure if you buy a bear it will be ok. hope this helped you understand what i meant. thank you

  • @jorgecoppen
    @jorgecoppen 10 років тому +6

    There is a lot of hands on work to creating a recurve bow before and after the template cuts the basic shape of the handle section. Many of the machines are guided by hands. Why not use technology to cut to the damn chase! YES handmade..mostly.

    • @HondoTrailside
      @HondoTrailside 2 роки тому

      They are. But at the same time, in the wooden bow market, it isn't clear you can speed things up by taking the hands out of it. A powerful grinder is one of the fastest machines there is. And you just pick the bow up no need to fixture it. Unless you have a market like the cheap end of the Fender guitar market, you aren't going to do better with CNC across the board. A lot is made of how long it takes to learn the skills. That may be true. It is something a devoted amateur can pick up in a few evenings after watching a week of youtube. But hiring people off the street with zero skills, and whose only desire is a paycheck, that may take a while.
