This stuff happens a lot and it's usually not a big deal. Take a stiff shot, give your receipt, then laugh about it later. But from time to time, it can get pretty heated.
Well in the Shawn Michaels and Jerico segment. Shawn would not have known that he made full contact because his wife was supposed to sell the punch either way. So its only afterwards he would have known he really punched her for real.
My favourite part of that "Chris Jericho punched Shawn Michaels' wife" moment is that Rebecca allegedly made fun of Jericho by going "was that all you got?" backstage. Pretty funny.

According to Jericho, when he punched HBK's wife, HBK was actually furious backstage and more than anything blaming himself for bringing her into the segment. Jericho also felt really bad and was very apologetic. The only person that didn't freak out was the wife herself. The reason the punch made contact in the first place is because she came too close to receive it and she took all the blame for it and said it's not a big deal.
The ref always check on the wrestler if they legit hurt or not. Today, if the wrestler legit hurt, the ref will stop the match or tell them to finished the match. But back in 90s and early 2000s, some of the guys still continuing the match, even thought they injured or concussed. They changed those policy today, so if you hurt, the ref need to stop the match.
The wrestler always check on each other as well, that's why you can see them talk to each other after doing some move.
Its like Jim Cornette said, "Back in the day guys didn't hurt each other but everyone thought they did, now guys hurt each other but nobody believes they do."

If someone's hitting you and they won't calm down no matter what you're saying then you can give them a stiff shot right back. Hopefully it will snap them out of it and you can carry on with business.

They call it a receipt when they hit them back, its common in the wrestling industry and wrestlers can wait until weeks later to get pay back and its openly talked about and accepted.

It's all staged. Then when accidents happen, they use it to their advantage to show how real it is. It was a set-up to punch his wife - but when he accidentally hit her too hard, they pretend it wasn't an accident. They want you to believe it was real. They also build up the response. She probably didn't need anything but a cold ice pack after the punch - but they brought out the neck brace, the back-board, an ambulance... I'm reminded of even way back - the 1950's - wrestling was on TV on Sunday mornings. I was a kid, and my grandma from Greece couldn't speak a word of English - she thought it was all real. She would watch it just wringing out a towel and yelling how brutal it was. We tried to explain it to her - but when they used tricks like fake blood and pretending to hide a brass knuckles - she refused to think it was a put on.
They actually hang a string from the ceiling during wrestling training. And make them punch at the string while not trying to make contact with it. That's how most of the punches look real.
The ref would know difference in real or acting injury they have X arm signal calls for real medical come ringside.

i mean ive had my nose broken 4 or 5 times in my life 7 broken ribs as well (3 the first time 4 the second) and since im not a pro fighter/wrestler i didn't get paid for it
life comes with risks

Shawn Michaels actually thought it was a "working punch" until he checked on her and she told him that Jericho hit him for real. But as you can see, he didn't follow through fully with the hit. But it still was just as bad.

I remember watching a young Kurt Angle go against Hardcore Holly. Holly was in the corner and Kurt ran a knee into him, he missed the spot and got Holly's arm. Fractured it. I could tell something was wrong because Holly kept wrestling but he wasn't moving that arm the rest of the match.

It ain’t ballet out there! With Lesnar, those elbows were planned. You can bleed one of two ways in wrestling.. the easy way (blade) or the hard way.. and it was planned that Lesnar would go the hard way to bust those guys open.
