RUSH - Not Fade Away & You Can't Fight It (First Single) 1973 - Moon Records (MN 001)

- The very first Rush single, recorded during the Spring of 1973. The "A" side was a cover of the song made famous by the Stones, but the "B" side was an original Rush composition. These tracks have never appeared on any other (legitimate) release.
Alex Lifeson talks about Rush's first single:
Not Fade Away:
"Man, we were very young when we did this! We were playing the clubs and didn't know better. Because we were having such a hard time getting a deal, our management thought that maybe something a little more accessible, possibly something already known, would be the way to go."
"Not Fade Away is something we'd been playing live, but we did it really heavy. We rocked it out, sort of the way Led Zeppelin might have. It was powerful and very full. We had a good time with it."
"By the time we recorded it, though, we lightened it up a little to make it more palatable for radio. This is the version that was to be our debut album, but we ended up dropping it and it rerecorded some of the other songs."
"Everything was done so quickly, and it didn't really come out the way we wanted it to. But you know, we were 18, 19 years old. In our minds, we'd arrived. We'd made a record, which meant...we were recording artists."
You Can't Fight It:
"Geddy and John Rutsey wrote this one. I think it came about in 1971, something like that. It was also supposed to be on our first album, but we dropped it, too. I think we took off three or four songs that were going to be on the album."
"You Can't Fight It was a fun tune to play, though, especially in the bars late at night. We would never play it early in our show; we'd always do it in the second set or the last set when everybody was feeling pretty spirited, in both senses of the word."
"As to why we picked this song over some of our other originals, I think the reason was because it was short. You had to be under three minutes to get on the radio in 1973, and You Can't Fight It fit. Like Not Fade Away, I thought this recording was a little tame. I thought so then, and I've always thought so. But it's what we did at the time."
Came here from Ged’s book too. Better than I thought. Geddy was none too happy with how this turned out. Any new RUSH is good for us. Did not know this existed.
Me too!
I'd heard _of_ Not Fade Away years and years and years ago but had never _heard_ it until these videos popped up.
OMG same! Had to listen after Geddy's obvious displeasure. I've been a Rush fan since 79 - never knew this existed. Lol
came to listen to this after hearing it referenced in Geddy’s autobiography. so cool to hear a Rush tune that I haven’t heard before. thanks for sharing.
Me too!
Same!
Ditto
"We did not sound heavy in any way, shape or form.."
Me too
Wow! That guitar solo on you can't fight it also, did anybody else think that had traces of led Zeppelin rock and roll and whole Lotta love?
Fantastic! Geddy's autobiography brought me here. Never heard it before 😎💜
This is a classic RUSH tune. You can tell already they were destined to become mega stars.
First single? Shoulda been their LAST!!!
I have this on single in really good condition. I play it sometimes, but I am so careful with it since its so rare.
Holy crap, you’re so lucky!!!
I guess Im kinda randomly asking but do anybody know of a good site to watch newly released movies online ?
How the heck were you able to get get something so rare?
I'm trying to purchase the 1974 album in vinyl but its hard to find fore a sane price. Whatever you do DO NOT sell that record.
I have a copy of this also. I do not play it but I framed it and placed it on my wall of RUSH. lol
Man’s on here casually mentioning how he has a $1000 treasure of a 45
Three years later - 2112! The transformation is mindblowing. Thank God for Neil Peart.
Long live Neil and all of RUSH. pass this to your kids, because true musicanship is a dying art
I hear ya but I wouldn't thank God (I know it's a figure of speech) I thank Neil's Parents and Geddy and Alex for picking him. And Neil's friend for recommending him to Rush's management. Lol, I'm a wise as agnostic...✌🖖✌
Neil was a Godsend. And a great guy!
Man. Maybe it’s just me, but I can almost hear Analog Kid at the start of You Can’t Fight It!
Just found this extremely rare 45 in vg+ condition at my local thrift store last week for three dollars. Could not believe my eyes when I saw it. Plays great, sells for upwards of 2,000 U.S. dollars.
I found an original Kenner Admiral Ackbar at my local charity shop, sadly missing his head and left arm. Slightly melted on a fire. I'll swap you that or buy the single off you for £1.27.
Excellent thrift find!!!!
John is no Neil but there's some pretty damn good drumming here.
My History lesson for the day.🤙🏻
From Humble Beginnings ! This influence can be found ln the RUSH: Feedback Album!
Humble beginnings to rock royalty
Alex shreds on both tracks!
Bill Kapitan here in Texas. First time I've heard this. What a treat. Still a sad day in Rock History. RIP Neil Peart! The MASTER of percussion!
We say Farewell to a King!
Great poet too!
I had both of Teddy's books autographed, and got my picture with him😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊beauty EH
I think Not Fade Away was made famous by another chap before the Rolling Stones, called Buddy Holly in 1957! :-) This is a lovely clear recording of it though, thanks for sharing it. Have also been listening to Rush at Laura Secord Secondary School, 1974, St Catharines, Ontario which contains 3 more rare tracks, plus RUSH - New In Town Platinum Edition (1974) which contains 3 further rare tracks on it. Such a great collection of rare stuff!
Buddy recorded it at Norman Petty’s studio in my father’s hometown Clovis, New Mexico.
Geddy sounds fantastic!!
At 1:11, you hear that signature Alex Lifeson sound -- letting those chords ring out!
you mean Jimmy page sound
I am so glad this is floating around the interwebs but I am even more glad that Rush moved beyond this straight ahead rocker phase.
Stephen Baldassarre lmao imagine if Rush had somehow put this type of music out for 40+ years xD
I’d still have a hard time not loving it tho. I’ve really gained some appreciation for their debut thru CoS.
They would had become "kiss" no.2
I’d like to think Kiss 2.0. I like the rockers the best. But I think they did all the straight ahead rockers in them.
too bad they moved into new wave techno crap
Ok, once it opened up, I like it. It's got that "dirty" sound, like early Zep or Sabbath. Imagine BS with a clean sound...? Hilarious 😂
I'm even ok w the record "pops," which I TRULY despise. They're like fingernails down a backboard to me. I'll take tape hiss any day, especially since you can't hear it at volume, anyway.
i hope this single gets released on cd. either as bonus tracks on the first rush album, rarities album/box set, greatest hits, etc.
Snowdog i subbed. You got rush stuff ive never heard thanks guy ✌🏻️
I wonder how much that vinyl would cost....
Interesting to hear this and a damn rare disc I'd think
Never heard this recorded before
Awesome post
Rush Will Always Rule The Galaxy!
Great post.
My Effing Life brought me here.
THANK YOU!
GREAT!
Omgeezy! Thanks for posting.. born in 1965... listened to Rush my entire life
best version
Waiting for a special Rush Box set of rare / live / demos / interviews some day.
...excellent music!!...
History..👆
Alex's lead guitar tone is killer. And signature Rush ending from the very first single, love it.
Wow its like Rush and I want Candy mash up.....interesting how they changed over the years
.
wow thanks
Wow. A first time for me too. Great stuff. The B side really is a hint of the structures to come on the first album. All part of the sweet history. I'm really impressed. MN001 ? That's gotta be worth something. Maybe they never expected to sell 1000 of anything while releasing on Moon 🙂
Never saw this, whoa! You checked my RUSH nerd ego! Great rare find. Thanks!!!
Awesome post!!
It would be nice if there is a 50th anniversary re-issue of the debut album, I would hope they would include these two songs on it.
I've never been much of a Rush fan - which makes me a very bad Canadian! But I love Rush doing Buddy!!
I kinda like this version of Rush
WoW "Can't Fight It" has a real Blue Oyster Cult feel to it
Nice stuff Snowdog , thanks!
You can hear a lot of what was to come in *You Can't Fight It.*
With the recent passing of neil pert. Here it is the full single with the drummer who Nigel has joined john rutsey
God, Lerxst could fucking JAM!
I'm used to hearing the Dead play this. Rushs version will take some getting used to. Still cool to hear "new" Rush.
👏👏👏👏
Helium!
Definitely hear the Zeppelin influence
I also feel a bit sorry for John Rutsey, having been forced to leave Rush due to health issues just as they were about to get off the ground. He was a pretty good drummer, too.
Hell yea, Johnny was a solid rock drummer. I wish there were more videos with him playing shows. I only know of that Laura secord secondary school video.
I wonder what went on with him after he fell under the radar. I bet it was more than just health issues to his departure but I guess we will never know.
eh he was pretty much a standard timekeeper he had some tough parts but nothing like neil
@@psychochayden69 Neil's a legend but I do like John a lot too, the simple fills work perfect for stuff like "Working Man"
Apparently, according to Geddy in his autobiography, while Rutsey’s health definitely had a role in his departure from the band, it actually had more to do with musical differences as Rutsey was more into straight forward hard rock while Geddy and Alex were delving deeper into prog and odd time signatures which John didn’t like.
Wow, this is rare
Great cover of a legendary Buddy Holly song and a cool unreleased collaboration between Geddy and original Rush drummer John Rutsey. Thanks for posting! Although this predates Neil Peart's joining Rush, let me also post "RIP Neil Peart, 1952-2020."
Well it was released, it’s just rare.
This is about the same time the Grateful Dead started playing this song too.
Took me a while to catch on to Rush (thank goodness I did!), but there are some interesting devotional parallels between Rush and the GD. Maybe it's just that thing of being singular sorts of bands who stuck to their intuitions.
I always wanted this single. I satisfied myself when someone stuck it on a CD boot of a Roll the Bones show as bonus tracks.
Sounds better than I remember. I can hear commercial potential!
Terry Browns production did have a more meaty sound though.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I can hear "what you're doing" in "can't fight it".
Reading Geddy's book right now and he is not happy with these two recordings, to say the least lol.
🤘🏻
♥
Although I had heard these songs many years ago, the quality was particularly bad. After reading about them in Geddy's autobiography, I decided to seek them out again and here I am. Yes, they do sound weak like he said, but soooo much better than the earlier, weak MP3 versions I picked up through Napster.
Shazam does not recognize this version of this song 😱😱😱😂😂😂.
Record it onto metal tape with audiophile system and save original vinyl. That can then be put to digital media readily. But I like the natural sound of vinyl on metal with quality system ( BOSE Monsoon in car!)
good
This is Rutsey on drugs isn't it?
Imagine if no one had given rush a chance to continue past this stage, no donna halper, no contract with mercury, just abandonned.....just an obscure led zeppelin wannabes from Toronto.....in other words, were not patient enough with newer bands, let them develop their style through a couple of albums, you never know where they can go musically.....
Never heard this one.. my first time....one of these songs are from the rolling Stones at least I heard them playing the same song.
Many of the pop songs from America and England were covers or contracts of other people's music by designated "Star Talent". The zRush Feed back album is entirely of songs repeatedly covered by successive generations of musicians before they were contracted to cover them again! Almost all of Clapton's big hits were other people's music or hit songs purchased for him to perform!
Geddy was right, his vocals are good, but the band sounds like their a few yards in the distance. Until the solo, on Fade away.
Sort of that dirty sound. Like Led Zep or Black Sabbath. I could also see Green Bullfrog "Who do you love?"
Drums are muddy, and it's clearly not mixed right, but you can hear something there. Bass is muddier on "Can't fight it" than the 1st track, too.
Like the baseline on Not Fade Away better than the other song.
The only non album Rush single correct?
No, they did an album of their favorite covers called Feedback in 2004
Can’t fight it really has all the ingredients except The Professor
is that a slide i hear during that guitar solo?
I hear no slide here. But Alex did play slide occasionally in these early days.
College 74-8: 👁️Bytor, TKE Bro ❄️ 🐶
If I didn't know who this was, I'd want the bass player immediately.
I'd be ambiguous about Geddy. Sorta of when you first hear Steve Perry (and I'm VERY into SP). Sounds female.
Talented Band, but the guy who engineered the track probably knew more about good places to score weed than recording … OMG!
Remake of a remake by the Stones. Just like Aerosmith doing I'm Down by Beatles.
Rush did Not Fade Away Better
The article is cool!! Thanks!
I hear a bit of Bo Diddley on the first track !
