Bronx woman who won 2014 Boston Marathon still waiting for prize money, trophy

- Buzunesh Deba, who lives in the Bronx, came in second place in the 2014 Boston Marathon, but two years later, when the first-place winner was stripped of her title, Deba became the first-place winner by default. Years later, however, Deba says she's still waiting on her prize money and trophy. In her first on-camera interview, she's finally ready to tell her story to CBS New York's Shosh Bedrosian.
That money needs to be adjusted for inflation.
Why, nobody else's is
@@NickBurns-ey6odbecause nobody else had to wait 10 years for their prize money…
@@Angel-pb5ob so? Inflation still happened.
@NickBurns-ey6od calm down, Nick.
Yup plus interest.
Getting the money back from the disqualified runner is not her problem
Boston should give her the money and make it their problem to get it back and take the loss if it is not recovered
So sad and unfair
How about that girl MARION JONES who cheated the second place winner of all the money she could have made
from her country, how does the Olympia and her country compensate her ?
Exactly!!
I’m happy that she made this public because you know they’ll find that $100k & her trophy real quick!
True! Give her her money!
what I read, it seemed that they already took it back lol. now they're just bs'n
bingo
Not a problem. Obviously they have money because they paid other winners since then. AND since they're all about fairness, they should pay her interest on the money they have withheld for 10 years. I'm sure they would expect the same if someone owed them money.
@leodegas7731 - you’ve said it best ⭐️
100% agree
Yup! 100k 10 years ago went way further.
Well put.
I pray for her to receive interest.
This is a contract violation. It isn't her fault they paid the other runner. They need to pay her first and then go after the other runner. They are punishing her for their own fiasco. She needs a lawyer and sue them. With interest and legal fees.
EXACTLY!!!
Nope
Or they could just undisqualify the person who won and shrug 😂
@@iamunknowableand lose participants when word gets out? Not a chance.
How do you know that? Have you seen the contract? How do you know that the contract doesn't say "original race results are final and any amendments afterwards do not change the financials"
0:53 Damn she came in 2nd and Nike dropped her that’s cold af
Exactly
That's the ugly side of Nike that people don't want to talk about.
This is just a random marathon. Like....nike is already funding a bunch of people they can't fund ALL of them if they cant get results 😐
Fr! Granted, the marathon is a lot tougher to win now than it was 10 years ago, like if you place in the top 20 now, you are guaranteed to have a contract for the next 3 years. But 10 yrs ago, the times were about 10 min slower. But still! That's 2nd place! They just had no intention of promoting an Ethiopian runner and were waiting for a whyt american to take her place as America's olympic/boston contender.
@@MagerialPage Holy cow.. you're obsessed with race mate. Always looking at skin color, how pathetic. Get rid of that victim mentality.
The Boston Marathon needs to be sued. That's not how debt works. You don't get to wait for someone else pay their debt before you pay yours.
That's not how contacts work either. They don't LEGALLY owe her the money
@@luisgutierrez8047 how? She won, of course she's owed money.
@@hohov they already fulfilled their legal obligations by giving the money to the winner at the time. It was the doper who breached the contract and committed fraud. They are already dud their due diligence by testing her and trying to get the money back as soon as they found out.
She could argue that they didn't do enough in the first place. That they should test winners b4 they give money. But that doesn't hold up either, you can dope then be undetectable by the time you win.
@@luisgutierrez8047 whatever. She's the true winner so no they have not fulfilled their obligations.
@@hohov facts dont care about your feelings 💁🏼♀️
Its like getting mugged at walmart parking lot where security cameras nor security could catch you then the robber goes and buys stuff in there with your money. Walmart proceeds to apprehend him as soon as they find out. But another person already made it off with the goods. Walmart is not legally obligated to give you your money back. The robber is. Grow up 😐
This woman got completely robbed of everything.
Her kids got robbed too
And let's be clear here - she didn't just miss out on 100k. She missed out on sponsorships and the acclaim that comes with a win, and most importantly, her moment was stolen. BAA needs to deal with getting the money back from the doping runner and pay her out in the meantime and give her a damn trophy. I find it hard to believe that paying out 100k would bankrupt them and ultimately that's not her problem. This is outrageous.
This happens in sports all the time, the athletes move on, nobody makes a fuss about it, especially in a sport where 90 percent of the athletes, are all taken some form of sports enhancement drugs.
I know it's not fair she got dropped by Nike and potentially lost future deals, but this is the world of sports it happens to thousands of athletes every year.
yep they're worth over $30 million they actually don't need to wait to get the money back, the organizers regulating them said. They can just pay her back TODAY plus interest. Shameful!
Shame on Nike, 2nd place in a race like Boston marathon is a massive achievement. Dropping her was absolutely appalling. I get it they paid the money to someone, and they have to get it back to pay her, but don't they have insurance?
They should give her prize with interest accumulated and inflation adjustment.
Then, they need to adjust for inflation for everyone else
@@NickBurns-ey6odyou’re a miserable hater leaving this comment over and over

Probably contacted them in private over the years to try and resolve this but was put on standby
She needs a lawyer. Why does she have to wait for Boston to recover the money? They need to punny up the money and then go chase the cheater for what she took. And I bet she will never return it anyway.
Exactly cancel the race for a year then to do whats right and fulfill their obligation. Why are new race winners getting trophy's and money when a prior one hasn't yet. Pathetic.

With news pieces like this, I'd always like to hear the whole story. This basically sounds like she was robbed.

Think of it this way: if she had won Nike would have continued that contract.

Totally absurd
Getting paid hasn’t been a sprint, it’s been a marathon.
Did that reporter ask that dumb question. Do you feel that that money would change your life. 100. 000 would change anybody life

She should have contacted a lawyer early on and this matter would have been resolved. Now she might be too late to sue.(Though if they have been promising to pay her that might toll the statue of limitations.)
The John Hancock company is a life insurance company that’s been in business for now over 160 years. With all the ability and money they have to fund prize money and aide the BAA with not just the marathon itself but also with pro athlete appearance fees over the years, you mean to tell us that an easily avoidable, but in my opinion purposely done in the disguise of “it’s just an “OVERSIGHT” Buzu hasn’t been given her prize money? Yes, she’s gotten her 1st place female medal and other accolades but JH/BAA just didn’t want to give her the prize money because Buzu won by default that’s what I got? FOH! Regardless, Jeptoo ran and won the race dirty and had to forfeit that, while Buzu ran it and finished in 2nd also becoming the course record holder, and now taking that 1st place overall honestly and clean. Knowing her and her husband Worku personally, this is entirely disgraceful as it is upsetting. JH/BAA needs to do better, pay Buzu her money!

As off the Nike cancellation, I believe ahead of signed a contract with Nike regarding that. She did not come out to complain about it, she’s after her winnings, rightfully so.
