Kinda late but I have two and despite the name it's more of a classic rock type distortion. I'm not very familiar with metal types of music but doesn't seem scooped enough for metal. Where it excels is in it's dynamics because of the stepped up voltage inside (around 30v).
TC This is a sweet pedal, but PUUUUUUUULLLEEEEEAAAAAAAASSSSSEEE bring the Rottweiler back into production!!!!!!

I love the Dark Matter pedal. It's my only distortion pedal on my board. The thing with the battery is you have to have a plug in the input jack for it to work. You can't just put in the battery and hit the switch. I guess that's so it doesn't turn on accidentally while traveling. I use this pedal and my ditto for busking. Works great.
A lot of distortions have sweet spots on the gain (usually really high) where people leave the knob. The Dark Matter sounds terrific no matter where the gain knob is. An absurdly great pedal for $50!
I got one of these on my board, I play in two worship bands and a cover band and it does "Marshall in a box" extremely well. I use it a ton :-)
I love this pedal for the price, they are unbelievably cheap. If you have a twangy fender setup and are looking for a mild to mid level distortion to thicken and clean that up, this pedals an awesome choice for sixty bucks.
Not sure if I'd enjoy this guy as much if we were in the same room, but he is one of the best pedal reviewers on UA-cam.

Just bought this pedal a few weeks ago. Loving it. I was using a BOSS Turbo Distortion before. The DM does everything the Turbo does, except better. =)
Great review, as always. This pedal is a steal for 50 bucks. Also, from my experience, it plays well with others, i.e., a low gain overdrive / boost in front of it.

Yes I paid full price years ago. It's a great pedal. Not sure why it's so low now. I understand ur explanation but it's GREAT. As soon as people see cheap they think well..It must be cheap. Nope. Oh FYI when I used to have solid state amps before I could afford tube amps it even sounded good thru them.

Sounds like the Mojomojo with a bit more gain. Still a great transparent sounding distortion. Honestly it's so see trough I would almost classify it as an overdrive. Great demo too.

Great take on a great pedal! I use this pedal quite like an overdrive and it tightens up my amps beautifully!
very nice EQ on this pedal. even with treble on 0 the sound does not get muffled, the mids are still there. This pedal must sound awesome in a band mix. Very very underrated
Damn Henning, just subscriebd to your channel for two good reasons. The first one is that u demoed this pedal which I find absolutely awesome for hard-rock boosted tones. U're clear with the explanations, components about the reviewed rig and such. The other reason, and not the least is that I get THAT thing since yesterday back in my pedal board. After havin headed up to a musical instruments shop for three days where I clearly said "Lookin for an overdrive and/or distortion which could allow me to reach hard-rock boosted tones without a huge loss of time", I tested several things more oriented into "boutique" pedals but it was NEVER what I wanted to hear. Until yesterday at the moment on which I heard those particular tones back, I get excited back like when I bought it for the very first time. Said to the seller "That's WHAT I wanted to hear". The guy said "It's entering range, it's very average... It sounds like draft... Blablabla Abraham... Blablabla Moses..." Anyways, I confirmed him that the "Dark matter" was my definitive choice. Paid it, picked it with me to the way back home. So glad of havin it back in my set that I cranked it up once back home and riffed on it. So damn good to find those tones back in the ears...
Your reviews damn rule and you rule too man. Big thumbs up and thanks like me to share the same impressions about THAT great distortion. Almost every guitar player should get one in their rig, as u said ;)

The Dark Matter is an excellent pedal and at a great price, a really good all round pedal for me, love using mine especially for low gain which totally suits a lot of my playing but also does the high gain/distortion tones really well, so it does pretty much most of the heavier sounds I ever need and use it for, picked a used one up for just less the £20 in UK last year and is one of the best 20 quids I’ve ever spent.
My local GC has a used on for 39 bucks...think I'm gonna go try it out, see if I like it as much in the flesh, as it were Cheers

Dark Matter is a great pedal. You can dial blues sound, classic rock up to hard rock territory.. It sounds clear even at high gain settings.. I do have a sound demo in my channel, you may visit it guys.. Thank you.!

Nice, I am currently trying to decide between buying the Dark Matter or the MojoMojo at the moment. It's a tough choice but the Dark Matter definitely took the lead after this demo. I think I'll buy one.

My TC Hall of Fame has a similar problem with the battery clip. It just doesn't take batteries, but i always use a power supply so it's not that big of a deal, it's still a great pedal.

for some reason I thought that seymour Duncan built the Dark Matter Pedal. not trying to get another pedal more face value but, The seymour duncan Dirty Deeds and what I thought was the dark matter had me convinced that that was the best service to tone improvement. Now I find out that TC electronics makes the Dark Matter......what a shock that was. thanks for posting.
That is how my HOF & FB delay worked too. With batteries it would work for a few minutes then shut down. Tested the batteries & they were fine. But like you say I don't use Batteries so no big whoop. Don't recall it happening with my MojoMojo.

At this time in the UK this and the mojomojo are both £36.00 each total nobrainer actually sat here waiting for my mojo to arrive but amazon obviously sent the guy out without a satnav, still it will get here eventually.
I own this pedal and I LOVE it. I would suggest using the MojoMojo with it as well.. I've seen Tore do it in other reviews. I'm assuming if you like this one, you NEED to review the Spark Booster. Trust me, I own the mini, and I'm considering getting the original as well. TC does it right! Great review!!!!

I was looking at bass distortions and this came up, I got it and it also works well with a bass
best distortion sounds like clean channel running with distortion at same time imo. the balance 4 me changes depending mood im in.

By the way, I think I will get this pedal. Just one question please....I have the Boss super distortion SD-1 and I'm thinking of getting the TC electronics mojomojo and dark matter. Is it a good idea? Are the mojomojo and dark matter less noisy than the boss? I only have modulation pedals of tc electronics and they are super silent! Thanks so much ;)

Same pedal but dark matter has more gain. MojoMojo is more bluesy

My friend has a dark matter too, but I cant figure out whats the difference.. A lot of videos here in YT, says that when your in "UP" position, it will give more bass response.. But as per the Manual, its the other way around.. When "Up" the sound is true to your signal.. And the "Down" gives more bass response.. Which is which for you Sir? Thank you in advance!!

So I bought this and put it head to head against the MP Custom FX Germainiac. They sound almost identical! To be honest it's almost unreal how similar they sound. The Germainiac has a lot less radio interference and sounds just as good. But what makes the Dark Matter win out over it is the two bad eq. I could dial in the right sound no matter what pickup or style. So now the dilemma. What do I do with two distortions that sound the same?
The Germainiac is a fuzz... are you sure they sound the same? I have that Gainiac and the Dark Matter on my board and they sound different... the Germainiac sounds A LOT different...
Interesting review, I liked it, I wish you could have gone all the way with the treble AND the bass levels to see what sound you got, but overall, nice review:)
I would like to see how it works compare to OCD (which I think you havn't tested yet)

I play mostly melodic death metal with my band and use overdrive pedals to boost my distortion sound from the head. Do you think this will be good enough as a boost pedal with little drive being used? I liked its sound so much in this video that I wanted to have it on my pedal board. But I would be using it just like a boost, as the distortion coming from the pedal itself, although extremely beautiful, is not suitable for the genre I play.
I can't wait to receive it in my mail box and try it out myself. But in the meantime I just keep watching your video over and over again.

+Andreas Jørgensen no..you can`t..I have this pedal..and I do not like it..TC does great stuff..but they fail on OD or Distortion Sounds..the Dark Matter is not very versatile..and sounds very thin (If you want some MEAT...maybe it is cool for the blues guys)..if we talk about the harder stuff you should really try the EHX Soul Food in front of a semy crunched amp..this is KILLER

does it take the sparkle out of the clean sound when you press the tone button. sounds like it to my ears, but I ve found my ears are decades behind modern gear.
In your non bias opinion which is a better all round distortion pedal the Dark Matter or the Mojo MOJO pedal..... I m confused. with them they dont sound that similar but the Dark Matter has my attention more so than the Mojo pedal. little pieces of relevant knowledge would aid the old man about modern gear. thanks
Have you tried stacking some of these distortion/overdrive pedals together to give a aggressive smooth quality to the mix.
