I was fortunate enough to work in Yarra`s from the start of my apprenticeship in 1975 until having to leave through health reasons in 2000. It was good to see in my opinion one of the best yard conveners in Stewart Crawford and one of my shop stewards Davy Kane talking about the industry. Change had to come to the yard or else closure would happen and with me having a young family to support there was not much else out there at the time. I think the thing that saved the yard was the process of building ships in units rather than from the keel up. This gave a better chance of continuity of the workforce and the survival of Clyde shipbuilding. Yes it was a dirty environment at certain times of the build but the friendships that i had made while working there made it all worthwhile. This is just my opinion of my time in the yard as a humble electrician.

My dad worked in yarrows yrs ago. But 20-30yrs in Ferguson’s at the port, yrs and yrs of decay and no support from the government has ruined the yards. So sad to see. I never took up the offer of Apprenticeship in Ferguson’s as it was a dying trade
I am working on HMS Lancaster at the moment in my opinion it is pure junk if this is the way they built ships on the Clyde than no bloody wonder the yards closed.

Most of the managers in this film look in their early 30's. How times have changed.
2016 and not much has changed.
interesting to see the history of the yards in which I work... Clyde shipbuilding is very much still alive, and kicking!

All that infighting over a tea break, no wonder the Clyde shipyards are unfortunately long gone!
The Unions lost the vote, the tea breaks were killed and the companies still went under. Your argument is invalid

Had the shipyard workers ----all the workers ,worked 24 hrs. a day for nothing the yards would still have closed..
