I like the T-strap hinges on the vintage Stanley tool box - but your series has been a goad for me to actually make one. Thank you.

Nicely done, Phil. Just the right level of difficulty and a useful project to work on with my grandsons-- one for each--next time they visit.

South Africa! Wow. Thank you for the comments. This project was really fun to do and way easier than I thought it would be.

Should have attached the bottom with nails, since they are more bendable than screws, allowing them to move more as the sides expand and contract differentially to the bottom. Or, you could have used a couple screws an inch or so apart on each end near the center line, and then nails for the rest.

I think I would do finger joints for the decorative look on the corners and thru tennons from the divider to the sides. I am up for a challenge. Patrick from Idaho

Finger joints would be really sweet on this. And I like the idea of through tenons on the divider. Great ideas.

I think I'm gonna try the finger joint edges.

Nice project. I would suggest using brass hardware and screws in keeping with the design of the original Stanley 801 tool box. The original also used outside strap hinges which would simplify construction for a beginner who may not have access to a router plane.

Thanks James. I see your point, but I wasn't necessarily going for a straight up copy. I prefer the look of the blackened steel hardware.

You don't need a router plane.

These are usually pretty good, but the structure of this project just makes me sad. The entire weight of the box (and contents) is being held up by a bead of glue when this is lifted by the handle. I would NOT fill this with automotive tools and carry it around very much. There should be structural continuity from the handle to the base. I cringe at tongues that are only the thickness of a saw blade. With half as much time at the table as was spent on the hinge cutouts, you can have a 50% thickness tongue and groove, even without the use of a dado blade. Finally, what is the deal with that part tray? Make the tray the width of the opening and put a rail on both sides. Done. That vertical he installed has to be installed precisely or the tray will not slide all the way across or it will start to fall through. The slot that's created from that is not a place to house a hand saw, it's the deep slot that things fall into forcing you to empty the entire box just to get them back. Nice idea, just needed more thought.

I think a full length handle attached to both ends would work well here, (like Jimmy Diresta's toolbox built by Frank Howarth.
