Dr. Tom sent me a Platinum MIDGE CREE saddle 15 years ago. So I know what you are feeling just holding it. It's my favorite out of 100's of capes and saddles. My favorite hackles for fly designing are my SPECKLED CHAMPAIGN Badgers. I am not a retail store, just a hooked show tier. Started out tying 55+ years ago with some very rough pseudo-genetics, the 'two hackles per fly' kind. Now I have hand-picked platinum saddles of every kind and shade, the happiest of tiers. I have a dark rusty cree for hackle, dark rust 'speckled' Cd'L tailing, and Whiting Wingers to make spectacular Royal Winger Coachmen. 20+ years ago, Dr. Tom changed everything. I was on his pro staff for years and visited the Delta farm many times to build my inventory of all his saddles and capes, plus his chickabous, CdL, spey, wingers, etc. Nice video, guys. Thank you, Dr. Tom. For me, hackles went from barely adequate to an addiction to perfection. My tying stash is all Whiting all the time.
Just watching this now, but have done some business with you guys in the past. Thank you for all the time you guys put into these videos and the shop 👍🏼
I've been reading that coq de leon is an endangered species now because no one is really raising them anymore. In the article I was reading they were saying that only 7 people in Leon are raising them and there are only 700 in total.
R Fly Fish Food. I know. I see them and drool some more. But to replace dozens and dozens of dry capes and saddles is not in a retiree's budget, especially since I'm not a production tier. But I do have one of the first 2-foot saddles produced, a cream/beige dunn saddle. Probably be a bronze grade now. But when I got it, it demonstrated what was in store for lengths. Tom's big challenge was keeping the tying qualities a top priority. Genes don't always cooperate.
You are always welcome to call to see what we have in stock normally but these hackles are part of the periodic "Flash Hackle" sale where they're all listed on our website at the same time so everyone has an equal chance at getting something. We think this will be listed early next week.
learned more about hackles in 10 min than the last 20 years of showing up at the local shop thinking I know my stuff. you guys look like Christmas came early...

That's platty cree never left that shop !!! I Guarantee
Dang... My cheapo crew got eaten by moths when no other hackles got touched and my retired Marine butt can't afford to replace it
BTW, My midge Cree saddle had legitimate size 32 hackles. Looked like fine thread until flared. And they were 'short' saddles hackles 8" long. 😉
flymasterA many saddles today are over 24” long.

Fly Fishing we don’t get any garbage ones. The “commercial” grade aren’t available to the public.

Fly Fishing you don’t. It’s just for fly tying factories.
