Love this song. Warm summer days indoors. Just me, my record player and a small vinyl collection. Brings back good childhood memories. It's still retained it's emotional quality too.
So many memories ...12 years old when this came out. Me and the 1st girl i ever fancied used to sit and listen to this album at hers while her parents went out on a friday night. Wonder if she ever thinks back to those days...!
sitting on one of those huge storage heaters full of bricks(mum "don t sit on the storage heaters, they go on fire") reading the cover of this and listening to this song. Its christmas morning and I m 11 years old.
Oxblood66 you are a true legend for posting these superb classics. As a true Madness fan from the very start of their career ( showing my age there ) I have pretty much everything they ever did but don't have time to sit and play everything so being able to just click onto your page and transport myself back in time is an brilliant..keep up the good work and my friend I salute you...
I love this song..Has a Motown feel in parts especially Chrissy Boys guitar tone at the solo at the end and the main hook is a bit I Want You Back Jackson 5
"Let's see if we can be happy; we'll mess about just you and me - must try and make it home before tea..." kids finding a Sunday afternoon solution to the new Thatcher era... Suggs magically compressed social issues into one cracking song... still brings up the goose bumps as it did when Madness Absolutely sat proudly on the red Top Ten shelf in 1980 - vinyl, of course - I suppose North London still had its good points in those days, and this was one of them. But baggy trousers on the tube? hm;)

My take on it is that the familiar things we grew up with, the dirt the grime, the wastelands, factories, working mens clubs and the general working class way of life has been obliterated and replaced by the superficial. It's a con, we lost our souls. Similar to The Jam's 'Wasteland'.
one of the greatest tracks ever by Madness
^^
hello to anyone who comes here to listen to this great tune and reminisce.
yes yes and yes
Best Era ever for Music Madness, The Specials and the rest of the movement fucking rocked:)

A true CLASSIC!
That piano cascade at the start reminds me horrendously of Meat Loaf
Their best record so far while the rest remained a masterpiece

Nine critters are heartless.
'I want you back' bass line.
Much better use of it tho.
And also the percussion just after the piano intro.
@@zomaariemand5650 That percussion bit is also used by the Belle Stars on Sign of the times
Could someone tell me what does this song tell?
I have read the lyrics but I don't understand the message that sends.
Thank you, I love this song!

Sounds SO much like the Clash, (but with a bit of class).
And musicianship. I love the Clash but they have their limitations. Everyone does.
@@mystychrysmthehumanprism3507 with the exception of Topper..an exceptional drummer
This song must have inspired Morrissey and the Smiths...
I have put the question to Chas Smash, we shall wait for an answer....
