The Christians lyrics were very political, they required you to do some thinking and homework. This song is very critical of the Thatcher government and the false promises of renewal for Liverpool after the devastating loss of heavy industries and the dockyard.
My dad passed away early this morning. In 1998 he used to drive to see me in hospital. Living in Grimsby, following a accident I needed specialist care in a hospital in Nottingham. Dad used to play this CD - or maybe cassette in those days - over and over again. Despite having to have both my lower legs amputated I made a good recovery. Love and miss you dad. xx
Sorry to hear about your Dad and your personal problems Wayne.... I wish you all the best. This song is worth playing over and over.... it is a fantastic track in all respects.
That's great to hear. You always want to hear that people are worth the respect you have for them. I heard him on a radio show and he seemed a good bloke but the true test is the sort of scenario you have described.
My dad and I used to listen to The Christians full blast in the car when I was growing up - great memories and I was lucky enough to take him to see them just before Covid kicked off. This song has played on repeat in my dreams the last few nights so I needed to scratch my itch this morning! Awesome band x
Thanks for that. I often wondered where it was filmed and always suspected it was Liverpool as that's where the band is from. I'm from Cardiff, BTW. We in South Wales went through the same sort of ructions that Liverpool and all the other industrial towns and cities across the UK went through in the 1980s under Thatcher - while the south east of England just partied.😡
I grew up with this type of music, excuse my french but fucking awesome band , seen them live in a small venue outside of Cardiff, words cannot describe how I felt when Gary asked for favourites, this was one of mine and I asked for it on that night and got it , thank you
brilliant song, old clarence dock power station on the docks in Liverpool the setting, not far from the boozer The Goat. Long gone now I fight for a reason to live...hooverville...
I remember seeing them at the Hammersmith Odeon in the 80's, there was a problem with power to the stage but that did not stop them, acoustic it was and they were fantastic.
Still relevant in 2024, if not more so than when it was first released. - Remembered this song after having just read Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.
These good looking lads were Kings of cool 👌Great singers songwriters and performers. An ex girlfriend got me back here drooling over Gary on fb 😍 how could I argue? I just had to agree 😂
Saw them a fair few times in my hometown of Glasgow and they always commented on how Glaswegians and scousers are the same..great band from a great city
Filmed at Battersea power station London UK. Creates a great tone to the song and video especially in black & white. Fantastic song and fantastic song from 1987 summer.
wish the christians would come back in the charts these are amazing this is what the young need to hear thamks for this music i have it on record but nothing play it on like most of my music thou i have hundreds of cds these days
One of them Was my Music teacher - before fame beckoned - Sadly the roads were'nt paved with silver or gold - he went back to teaching Ya Rocked Roger fer a wee while - 'Best teacher i iver had' Quarry Bank School Rocks ;-)
Criminally underrated song and band.
Spot on, could never understand why my mates didn't get this band...probably a little bit too much depth in the lyrics

My dad and I used to listen to The Christians full blast in the car when I was growing up - great memories and I was lucky enough to take him to see them just before Covid kicked off.

Thanks for that. I often wondered where it was filmed and always suspected it was Liverpool as that's where the band is from.
