    Hi Steve, thank you so much for taking the mystery out of inverters and 3 phase. I will be making the pulley carrier spindle and finding a 3 phase motor as soon as you show the video of it.
    I am actually sat in my shed right now waiting for my new Chinese lathe to be delivered! ... keep the videos coming Steve, they are very informative and the links to everything are invaluable.

    Excellent video. I have a VFD on my 1941 Flott drill press, works really well. I have connected a potentiometer and buttons for forward, reverse and stop, all of these run on 5/12V so you can use low voltage versions.

      Steve Jordan Hi Steve, yes, very easy, it was described in the VFD manual. I have HuanYang 1.5kW and it has I believe 6 freely programmable button inputs where you cann connect a simple push button to each and connect them all to ground. Then you program the VFD for each of the buttons with one of the available functions, e.g. forward, reverse and stop (but thre are more, e.g. preselects for given rpm etc.) ie you define a param in the firmware specifying which function to execute when the button is pressed. The potentiometer is just wired with 0 and 10V and the middle contact which are 3 dedicated connections on the VFD. It should be similiar for your VFD as they are all quite alike. Take care. Steffen

      Hi Steffen, What about an emergency stop button?

    • @stemer1149
      @stemer1149 6 років тому +1

      Hi Steve,
      I have not wired an emergency button, however, the parameter list for the multi-input offers both a normal stop function and emergency stop, so I could add another button for an emergency stop. Or, I could just put another button parallel to the existing stop button (wired OR) and use a more prominent aka RED button housing for that one. One could even put a "do not press this button" notice up (Terry Pratchet..)
      However, for real emergency stop (that stops the machine rather quickly) one needs a serious amps braking resistor to convert the kinetic energy of the machine into heat, I believe, and these are quite bulky and expensive, used on big milling machines and such.
      Besides active braking, one could program if the motor coast to stop or is decelerated by the VFD and the ramp times for start and stop functions, so with changing those parameters one can decelerate faster if so required.

    External control cables coming out of the top of the VFD does not lend its self to cable neatness, I have noticed that the majority of low Kw VFD they exit from the bottom as the motor supply cables do.

    Question - is it possible to set up the XSY-AT1 frequency converter so that when turned on it works at high speed, about 2-3 minutes, but after 2-3 minutes of operation to a pre-set low speed? A pool water pump is connected to the XSY-AT1 frequency converter.

    Thanks for your video. Could you please explain something that confuses me. At 1:49 the still image shows your motor wired as STAR and not as DELTA, yet the illustration in the instruction manual shows AT1 must be wired as DELTA. Regarding your electronic tacho, it relies on reflected light, so is never going to work well on a curved surface. Better to put your target reflection window on the end of the shaft, then it is flat, not curved.

    Hello, great video by the way. Very informative , I have one of these and have misplaced instructions, wondering if you could give me the parameters for this and how to set up with the motor I want to control... being an amateur electrician...

  • @exbof19
    @exbof19 5 років тому

    Very helpful video. Many thanks.
    I’ve recently bought an AT4 model from same manufacturer using Banggood. According to spec it is supposed to be an input 220v single phase and output 380v 3 phase model. If correct it is useful for driving older single voltage star point 3 phase motors without having to locate star point in windings and convert to Delta.
    I’m wanting to drive a 380v 3ph 1/2hp motor with this 3hp vfd.
    I would like to limit the current this vfd can output in order to protect the motor but I don’t see a parameter which permits me to limit the current to the motor’s plated full load current (1.05 amps)
    The instructions I received cover AT1, AT2, AT3, and AT4 models.
    I’m wondering whether you limited the output current and if so which parameter you used?
    Another strange things is that the AT4 model does not have an earthing terminal.

    • @84Prerunner
      @84Prerunner 5 років тому

      my AT1 does have current limit option. It doesnt limit the current per say, but it trips over current if it goes over what you input.

      Which parameter limits the current? I'm having difficulty understanding some of the Chinese English.
      I've connected my AT4 up to a 380 volt star configured motor (only 1/2hp). Only parameters I changed were from 60hz to 50hz and motor rpm to 1425. Motor seems to run OK but don't know whether it has full power as currently just testing on bench.

      Without a rotary phase converter you lose 1/3 of the power from the motor with a VFD like this. Thats why when you buy a rotary phase converter you get it with 1.5 - 2 times the HP of the motor you are running.

The parameters I have set are motor RPM for 1400 and torque compensation to 50 (I think it was setting 72), minimum frequency to 10hz and max frequency to 100hz. Other than that I think I'm running on default settings.

      Hi Samu, The torque seems to be ok on mine but I don't push it too hard with very low speeds and large drills, anything over 1". I have my lathe set so that the belts will slip if anything were to crash, or if a drill became too blunt though. I notice the RPM slowing a bit sometimes on the display but nothing that would concern me.

    • @christianwolf5842
      @christianwolf5842 4 роки тому +1

      @@nicolaspillot5789 That might be true but is definitively a security issue! There should be no need to break the GND line. What happens if the switch (only on GND) fails? Or it connects slightly after the mains line. You have a metal case, do not think too much of it and have contact with it while turing on. This will fry you in just the moment between connection of mains line and GND connection (which will trigger the fuse in this case just too late). At least in Germany you ALWAYS bypass the PE aka GND by any switches.

      Hi Steve thank you very much for your prompt reply. I went up the loft this morning and found 2 3 phase motors Brooks make which I believe is pretty good however they are old and they are 2 hp 2850 rpm before I go any further obviously these motors would need to be checked thoroughly before any alterations or indeed matching with an inverter to control them I believe the original motor on the ML8 wood lathe is 1/ 2 hp obviously i would need to check this ? could you give me any guidance on the best way to check these motors. I really would like to get a very slow rpm for safety reasons not much fun when a piece of wood flies off the lathe even with protective clothing on. Problem is that the manual isn't mentioning the numbers he should type on some variables, and in this way he put random numbers. This is why the screen displays "error 8". He saw your video, he did everything correctly, but problem still remains. If he programms again "programm 1" what variables should he put? Because, as i said, some variables are not mentioned in the paper (the paper you have too on the video). Thank you again!

    This is OK for the UK but, most European households have both single and three phase power as their standard domestic power installation.So those Europeans watching this very informative video should check their supply criterion before ordering a converter because you most probably will need a converter with a 380 volt supply and not 240 volt.

    • @StormbringerMM
      @StormbringerMM 5 років тому

      Error code one is possibly triggered because your 3 phase motor is in the Star or “Wye” configuration and if you’re trying to start it at say, 60Hz, you won’t have enough starting torque and you’ll get a current spike. So this error code is protecting your device. Press reset, or unplug and reset, and then turn the frequency dial to Zero, start the process again, with your motor switched on, and slowly increase the frequency.
      If your motor is in delta configuration you’ll be fine.

    Please can you tell me the parameter to alter the torque. I fitted a similar one of these to my pedestal drill, I have plenty of speed but hardly any torque.

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  6 років тому

      Hi Phillip, The AT1 VFDs parameters for torque are p71/p72/p73. Most people though make the mistake that you can alter these and get 'very high torque' which usually isn't possible. An acceptable torque should first be attained by using the correct sizes pulleys Ie..You should have A very large one on the main spindle drive, (mine is around 6.7" in diameter). You can see this in my next video. The VFD's parameter settings won't compensate if you have the pulley configuration wrong as the parameters are only for small adjustments.

    • @philiprogers5772
      @philiprogers5772 6 років тому

      Thanks for the reply, I very much appreciate it. For P71-Action time of TIMER. P72-Simple PLC auto-operating option and P73-The first period time set of auto-operating. I was expecting to be able to increase the current output in some way. Any thoughts? I do totally agree with the larger pulley idea however I have the largest I can fit and I have only managed about 3:1. This aside I have a 2.2kW inverter driving a 2kW 3 phase motor and I can stop the pillar drill chuck with a gloved hand. I feel that it is so underpowered that there is some parameter I have not set correctly.
