The end of analog cable TV from Cablevision

  • Cablevision in New Jersey ended their analog cable TV service in late August 2012. Since then, most of the channels are still transmitting a picture, but the programming has been replaced by a message telling you to get a digital cable box or use a digital-cable-compatible TV.
Now the only analog TV left in my area is from WNYZ-LP on channel 6 in New York City, an analog LPTV station which acts as an FM radio station, using their audio signal on 87.75 MHz.

To be fair, when you pulled the CableCARD from the cable box, it would give you this same message. Trust me, when I was a kid, who grew up with Cablevision, I did the same thing, then the TV would show this message.

I miss analog cable TV. It never broke down, and the image quality was fantastic. Plus, it was nice being able to flip through channels so quickly and easily!
Digital TV (or indeed, digital ANYTHING) is extremely unreliable. I would hardly call this progress.

Our local cable TV network (KabelDeutschland) still transmits analog TV, as well as digital TV and HD TV that obviously need a compatible receiver. A lot of the analog channels were moved to digital already, and it's clearly visible that they don't care for their analog systems anymore as the analog channels' image quality is becoming increasingly bad.
In my grandmother's house they did the same as you did. One TV has been registered, but really they are running 3 :D

On most 16:9 TV programs the extra width on the sides is only used for background scenery, so that viewers won't miss anything important when the sides get cut off to fit a 4:3 screen. The digital cable box will automatically letterbox any 16:9 programming that is not formatted this way to fit a 4:3 screen, such as movies.

    • @FrancisLitanofficialJAPINOY

DTV converter box are only to be used in ATSC broadcasts. Cable TV box are only to be used in QAM cable.
US, the Philippines, South Korea and Taiwan uses analog American NTSC-M for both terrestrial and cable broadcasting.
Philippines uses Japanese ISDB-T/Tb (Brazilian SBTVD-T) (with US DTV frequency 6MHz spacing at 60Hz resolution), US and South Korea are also ATSC, and Taiwan uses European DVB-T/T2 (US DTV frequency 6MHz spacing at 60Hz resolution).
Unlike the Japanese ISDB-C (Cable) and ISDB-S (BS Satellite) (ISDB-C and ISDB-S are only to be used in Japan), Both Philippines and Taiwan uses DVB-C/C2 (6MHz spacing at 60Hz resolution) and the US (and South Korea?) uses QAM.
Rest of the world uses DVB-S/S2 for international standard for FTA satellite broadcasting.

Aerial analog TV were shut down in 2007 here in Norway. Some cable companies still transmit analog signals, but most people used aerial signals. To make it worse, it were decided to use a non-standard encoding signal, so 99% of the TVs with a built-in digital decoder are not compatible. Thus making you have to buy the decoder sold by the distributor. Digital signals also require stronger signal strength, making fewer people able to receive aerial TV signals.

The father away you are from the cable TV provider's headend office, the weaker the signal gets and thus the more noisy it gets. Usually the lower channels (VHF range) are less noisy because there is less signal loss through the cable at lower frequencies.

I suggest everyone cut the cord and just get Netflix or Hulu or even Amazon Prime those services are so much cheaper and these days you really don't need a live TV all that much you have your over-the-air antenna for that and that's mostly just for local news and weather everything else in my house is pretty much just on demand stuff. As far as ABC CBS and NBC I can watch their TV shows on demand anytime either with my Roku box or my Amazon Fire stick streaming is pretty much the way to go for now it's a lot cheaper.

      * analog was only available in the Basic and Basic+ tiers. All higher tiers, premium channels and PPV needed a separate digital box to see.

Time Warner is just starting this here in Buffalo. They're removing some lesser watched channels from the analog cable spectrum next week. I'm not sure when they're going to totally kill it, and with the huge reliance on analog here, I don't think it will be for a while. Also, I'm pretty sure they don't charge for another TV. That was eliminated when they took over control of Adelphia in 2004/05. The only think to stop you from splitting the line is the decrease in picture quality.

Essentially yes, though frequency allocations are different. With broadcast UHF, Channel 14 starts at 470Mhz. With Cable, Channel 14 starts at 121 Mhz (AKA right over aviation frequencies) and reuses frequencies used for other things as well (marine, general 2-way). It can do this since all the energy at these frequencies is sent through the cable, and not over the air.

Most cable companies did away with the "charge extra for additonal TVs" thing years ago. I remember the days Comcast still had clear QAM for everything including the PPV channel block. Got to watch quite a few free movies that way. Of course it was totally random and you had to wait while the neighbor paused the show and went to the bathroom.

£10 to get Rupert Murdoch's Sky on another TV (unless, you use the RF output to relay what's on the main box to the other TVs, they're all right with that)
I never quite got how so many people in the US are still using 4:3 TVs, is it just the concept of 16:9 didn't really take off?

Are you telling me that they charge you another fees for another receiver just so you'd be able to receive digital cable? I'd simply cancel my subscription in that case and find another provider. This is called fraud. They can't simply steal your money that way. They make you call to a number, essentially requiring you to switch over to digital, and they actually charge you for another receiver in your house? I'm glad I do not live in USA because this kind of treatment is illegal over here in Europe.

    • @syxepop

What happened is that Cable TV systems in US charge an extra fee for every connected TV and our dear host did pay for a digital box upstairs, but not any Cable for the 2nd TV (he was able to connect the other TV as long as it was analog).
Once everyone was forced to have a digital box for any service he had to pay for a connection he didn't formerly report, so it was a NON-ISSUE.

Most cable companies have went downhill ever since digital cable was introduced
Where I live, there used to be a plethora of (RF) cable companies to choose from before they all tried buying each other out (Adelphia, TWC, WOW, insight and Charter), TWC bought out Adelphia, then later insight, now Charter is in talks about buying out TWC, leaving the current choices to WOW, Charter (and for now) TWC
WOW was the first (in my area) to go completely digital (and did so properly IMHO), and now TWC and Charter (AFAIK) have just recently switched to completely digital (which they implemented horribly IMHO)
WOW was decent enough to offer their digital channels out as ClearQAM, allowing any newer TV with a ClearQAM tuners to pick them up without a Digital Basic STB (of course a Digital Basic STB is still required for analog TVs), TWC and Charter on the other hand locked their digital channels to their Digital Basic STBs so that they can't be accessed via ClearQAM, basically so they could make

more money off of other TV connections
Due to personal experience, I can't stand Cable TV anymore as a whole and switched to U-verse, while an IPTV STB is required for every TV, the overall experience is much better and allows for features just not possible on Cable

Yeah, of course TWC is officially bought out now. (As of 2/24/2017.) Right now, it looks like Spectrum is going to leave the policies alone. However, they could put in a anti-consumer policy at any moment, that is what I am worried about.
For example, most Internet Service Providers have a data cap. Even AT&T's U-verse has a 150 GB data cap, you can find it if you look at the fine print hard enough. TWC was the only company I was aware of that didn't have a data cap in the fine print. If Spectrum decides to implement a data cap, I would take that to be Anti-consumer.
I don't know if it is just me, but it does seem like the reliability of cable has gone down the toilet since Spectrum took over. Used to be a cable outage was a rare occurrence, maybe once or twice a year. Now there is an outage about once a month. The last cable outage that happened took my cable modem out of the equation entirely, so I had to go get a replacement from spectrum.

watcher206 Back when I had TWC/Spectrum, it was unreliable even back then, we had triple play service and it was constantly down, sometimes the TV would work but the internet and phone were out, the TV would go out but the internet/phone would work, and there were times when everything was out
Installation and repairs were horrible too, installers/contractors are given a few hour training session after being hired and are sent out in the field and it shows, if they can manage to terminate coax correctly, it's about the only thing they know how to do, they have no idea of how the inner workings of their STBs/DVRs work, half the time they miswire something, requiring someone else to come out and "fix" it (and break something else in the process), and the worst of it was their STBs/DVRs that only lasted a month, so by the end of the year, we already went through 12 DVRs
AT&T hasn't been perfect, but it has been pretty reliable for the most part, I'm still on my original hardware that I had since installation, AT&T uses in house installers (prem techs) and doesn't allow contractor installations, so installations are always done properly and they also communicate with the customer to make sure they are satisfied with the installation before leaving
I'm not sure if AT&T just likes me or if I'm just lucky (or maybe I am grandfathered into some plan), but I don't have a 150GB data cap, I just checked my account on the "myAT&T" app and I happen to have unlimited

    • @watcher206
      @watcher206 7 років тому +1

Wow, so it sounds like you had it worse than I did when you were with Time Warner cable. I have not had issues with the installers, or at least not in my area. But I have had issues with my equipment in the past, mainly with the TV.
In the area I used to live at, there was still Analog cable. So when the Digital TV equipment crapped out, I could just remove the cable from the Digital equipment and plug it straight to the back of the TV and continue watching the show. However, I moved to an another state about a year ago and the area I am at does *not* have analog cable. So when the Digital cable malfunctioned, I pretty much just had to ether watched air wave tv or watch UA-cam. Eventually I got sick of paying for TV service that doesn't work, so I canceled that portion of my service. I still have the phone and Internet with TWC so far.
I personally would prefer to have POTS at the phone instead of cable, because then I would at least have a working phone when the cable went out. However, that is not available in my area ether. (I have a cell phone, but I have an auditory processing problem that limits the effectiveness of a cell phone for me. So I have a landline for that reason.)
It is possible that you got grandfathered in depending on when you got service. The Data cap I read in the fine print back in 2015. I would still look at the Terms of service to make sure though. Companies have a bad habit of advertising something as unlimited and then listing the limit in the Terms of service agreement.
As an example, Vonage is guilty of this practice. They list their residential telephone service as unlimited. However, if you look at their Terms of service Section 5 D, you will see that they actually limit the service to 3,000 minutes a month.
Most information companies have a similar business practice as well.

      @michaeldickens1101 7 років тому

watcher206 Yeah, I usually prewire for that reason, when we had the cable service installed, the guy seemed completely clueless
I explained to the installer that I wanted the EMTA/modem installed in the basement, but that he could cut the coax heading to the office as we wouldn't be using anything cable related in there and the coax passed by the location in the basement I wanted the modem to go, when he went to install the modem, I caught him attempting to install it in the office, I said "umm nope, in the basement, I said you could *use* that coax, not install it there", he goes "uhhh, okay" and proceeds to the basement
Next, in that particular house, only 3 rooms and a loft were wired for cable (living room, master bedroom, a media/playroom and of course the aforementioned loft), so mine any my brother's bedroom weren't wired, so I asked if he could run a line to the rooms, he said "nope, can't to it, it's not on the list, we don't do extras"
During this time, we were supposed to get an EMTA (cable modem with phone ATA), but the guy didn't have any on his truck (oh yeah, great preparation there bud), so he said he would have to schedule another guy to come out, in the meantime, I prewired for phone and ran coax to the other rooms, just so happened I wasn't around for round two
So I come home after guy #2 came out and the modem was replaced with an EMTA as was supposed to be, oh, but this guy didn't just replace the modem with the EMTA like he was supposed to, oooh no, he just had to get his dirty mitts all over my cabling
I first noticed the first issue that night, went to bed and turned on my bedroom TV... Nothing but static, change channels, again, static (during the analog days), I go down to the main splitter and noticed guy #2 disconnected the line (he had absolutely no reason to, and he shouldn't have even touched the splitter at all, wasn't required for the replacement), since I was down there, I decided to check the NID/TNI, and sure enough, guy #2 just had to mess with that too (now if we ever wanted to switch back to POTS, we couldn't as he cut the line to short to switch back, requiring a splice)
It was after that point everything started failing (shoddy DVRs, bad cable plant causing intermittent service, had the phone go out in a power outage, later finding out they never put a battery in the EMTA, which is illegal)
At that point I got fed up and we switched to WOW, and they were fine for the most part, their channel lineup lacked a bit, but for the most part was reliable as far as cable goes
We have moved since then and switched to U-verse, which we have had no problems with
POTS is better, I agree, I never was a fan of VoIP, too many chances for things to go wrong
I would understand advertising unlimited and offering a cap of some sort (either throttling speed, charging extra or blocking access) and only saying so in the fine print, though AT&T doesn't really need to advertise to me since I already have services
I am pretty sure my internet access is unlimited, myAT&T is an app used to manage and pay your bill, so I'm pretty sure if I had a 150GB cap, it would show in the meter how much of said 150 was used, currently it says "98.05 of unlimited GB used"
That's not to say that U-verse doesn't have data caps, I bet many of their plans do, but that's not to say it's impossible to have an unlimited plan

The FCC digital switchover in 2009 only affected over-the-air broadcast TV. It did not affect cable TV systems. But many of them started switching off their analog channels around the same time, to open up more bandwidth for digital channels.

that sucks. glad still have analog cable here. will hate when it goes digital here. sure the box they sent you is free but another thing to plug in. also hate how stuff gets newer it gets slower. vhs put in and play, dvd wait few sec, bluray, wait a min if lucky. used to be able to change channels fast on tv. seems like some tv's have a slower delay between channels but lcd tv's take forever between channels. forget about cable boxes and satellite. channels surfing on that is about imposable.
