Thanks! I actually knew this trick but I was missing the "read only" and restart part. You can also force the BPM interface if you write "2".
It's a shame they removed this official option.

Interesting guide, what are the benefits of this out of interest? I clicked the video thinking it was gonna show how to get touch menus to show but realised that is Big Picture overlay

Some games like warframe and others can detect if you have bpm overlay and change something about the game. In warframe's case, it forces controller icons and doesn't allow certain inputs in the menus like mouse clicks. The menu navigation with controller is reallly slow and worse than using a mouse so it is better to send mouse inputs but the issue is if bpm overlay is used then the game will ignore the mouse clicks you send it.
In pretty much every game I play, I hardly ever use bpm overlay and only use it to make a config when i start out playing the game. I think bpm overlay also is a bit laggy (personally speaking, could just be my mind making it up) so when I have a game I have already made a config for, I'll do this for it so I don't need to unplug and replug the controller to switch overlays.
One more reason is that some games I just don't play with controller so having the bpm is kinda useless and the desktop overlay is better for kbm.
Steam used to have this as a simple setting in the properties menu of the game but they made a pretty recent UI change that made the setting dissappear. I knew that it was still possible to do this because I had my apex legends game set to force desktop overlay before the UI update and after the update the setting was still on (game always launched with desktop overlay) so I knew they had the setting stored somewhere. That's the main reason I wanted to find the setting for myself and how I discovered the method in the vid.

I am going to assume that this method is outdated since I am not seeing any of this in the local config file.

search for 'apps' instead of 'overlay'. i just used this last night because my gamesir x3 seems to just default to desktop controls for every single game ive tried. just changed the 'steamcontrollerconfig'(or w/e) value to '0' (i tried '2' first and it forced BPM controls). So i know it's in the local config.
