Hey Sam, you could use that piston retraction tool to prevent the piston from popping out when doing this method. The motor will stop if it feels pressure, thus saving you a headache of reinstalling the piston back in.
Ñññ
I want to do my wife rear brakes but this issue is legit my issue. So this can still be manual done?
You just saved my family a ton of cash, thank you! My husband was able to do the rear brakes/rotors on our VW CC today because he watched this. THANK YOU!!
If you take the electric motor off the caliper (2 bolts I believe), you can wind the auger down with an Allen wrench; no battery required.
Can confirm. Have done this myself.
Thank you so much for this.
If you start with the handbrake off then you don't even need much power to draw the auger back. I have just done mine with a 9v PP3 smoke detector battery!
Legend.
One of the best videos to demonstrate this process. Makes the job really easy. I just ran a wire from the car battery terminals to retract the piston - worked great.
This does work and doesn’t effect the cars computer great loophole to keep out of garages this one
I've also done this today on a VW Touran 2017 R-Line and it worked perfectly. When you turn on the engine, on your dash an error will occur about the parking break but will disappear after you engage and disingage it once.
I used this method this morning and it worked perfectly. Just some advice, when the motor is winding tighter you can see it move tighter. When it’s winding backwards you can’t. Or I couldn’t anyway. It’ll pop when it’s fully out. Thanks for the help.
Hey I have a 2015 q5 and the piston is spinning when the polarity is set to retract it but it clearly extends when the polarity is reversed. Are you saying you can’t really tell it’s retraction into the caliper while it is?
OMG I was trying forever to figure out my buddies electronic brake but was having issues. Awesome video and this solved the question on how to wind it back in. Great job thank you.
Excellent video. A coat hanger wire bent and hammered flat worked as well as your tool for disconnecting the electrical connector, incase anyone else finds themselves swearing already at step 1🥴.
Oooh, yes. This is a very important step. Removing the connector can be a job on itself. Don't get me started on how I removed a simial VAG connector. It looked like it was chewed by a dog.
Positive on the rounded side for retraction
Thank you for this !!!!! sAved the day !!! my scantool had issues with data returning from the braking system...this manual procedure saved my morning, worked like a charm on my 2013 A8L 4.0 !!!!
My mechanic fucked my parking brake, even though he had the scan tool, popped the piston and screwed it back in ,
Thanks a lot 🙌🙌🙌 my expensive scan tool has the function but it failed to work, your method worked a treat
I'm having the same issue it functions forwards and backwards but doesn't retract all the way
9V battery works also. In my experience on VW CC 2011, the battery option is the best, as it works regardless of how seized the actuator mounting bolts are or how strangely "Intermittently faulty" scan tool app wants to be. (Carista, I am pointing at you.)You will always get the connector off, even with sand in it, like in my case. Use good pick tool, carefully. It helps, regardless of potential damage you may cause. Just research your style of connector first.
Thank you for your help saved me a lot of head scratching
Great video, well explained and nice clear instructions! Glad i found it, saved a lot of stress and you solved a problem for us today! Many thanks
Just a note of warning!!! The cars control unit for these wind motors monitors load (in Amps DC) being pulled when motor runs. When amps climbing sharply (motor pushing hard against pad/disc), it stops the motor. WHEN you simply apply a DC voltage from a battery and wait for it to bottom out in either direction, be quick to react, as the motor / gearing can easily damage itself! A fuse in the line wire from the temp battery is also a good idea (in case of shorts or accidents).
Just unscrew motor of caliper and rewind with hand than press the piston. I did it on my superb. No electricity needed at all. 👍👍👍
This is far quicker and easier
Literally ! I have the hand tool that turns it back in. I’ve have a few Audis and BMWs lol😂
Yep, i didn't need to use a motor! Just release handbrake with switch on dash, open up the bleed screw on caliper and force the piston back! This way no fluid will be pushed into abs unit! As easy as doing front pads 😊
Exactly what I needed - thanks so much for posting this video, clear and to the point
Thanks for this video. This is exactly what I needed to know.
Man! I can't believe that I didn't think to use my power prob, especially since I've done this before. I used to be a professional mechanic around 10 years ago, and i still dabble in the art, sometimes. I guess the saying stands true, you don't use it you lose it. Sad day
Hello it was very helpfool short video, you just save me 200£,i was think change new calipper becouse cant push it back, more people must share video like this how to do it,how to made it .thank you
Thank you worked perfectly with a power probe I already had saved me time and money !
Thank you for this, was driving me mad, last time I did this in a golf it simply screwed back in.
Awsome technique mate works wonders🤩
Thank you for the video ! It worked. So easy ! Thank you again
Brilliant! Thank you 👍🙂🏴
You you left the electric brake on or off
☺☺☺☺☺☺thank you so much, this is a genius hack...
Thanks for the video it helped me alot
Amazing video!!
Using a battery without fuse, make sure that you immediately remove the wires from the epb motor to prevent damage due to high current. L when the motor stops it actually trying to pull more current to continue spinning. If your power source can provide 100A, the motor would try to load 100A and potentially damage it if the wires were not removed immediately after hearing it stopped.
There are wires between your potential source and the EPB motor. If you’re using salami thick wires to unwind piston, you’re doing something wrong, perhaps 🤣
@@howado you're definitely stupid and idiot in that case. 😂
Dude you saved my ass with this video!!
Very useful tips 👍👏👏👏👏👏👏
I have some follow up questions for this if someone could please help out with. When you start the job what do you do with the electronic parking brake, assuming that you make sure it is off? You state after you put new rotor and pads on to apply voltage to the parking brake to set the brake firm on the rotor, this kind of goes to my first question was the parking set on to begin with? If you snug the parking brake to rotors do you need to turn off in car after brake job is done?
Before you start set the EPB to off/release then remove the connector from the calliper.
@@FixitSam it's a good recommendation but I've just done this job after I've seen the instructions and I had actually left the EPB on. It doesn't make any difference I would say. I think it's even safer to have the other wheel locked.
Good video mate. Save going to the expensive garage just to change your pads. Can I ask what size is the socket to get the caliper carrier bolts off ?.
I tried this method but it didn't work for me. I tried connecting, battery recharger and also jump leads off another car battery.
In the end, purchased a Ancel 500 for £30 on eBay.
Will this work for a 2017 Audi A3?
Fair play to you. That's a great help.
It's pretty important to note, if the handbrake is off then leave the calliper retracted. I would say its easier to leave the handbrake on. My car threw a wobbly. Started to panic we was going to need a scanner as we couldn't release the handbrake. Had to remove the wheels again wind it off and reply, after putting the handbrake on
I retracted caliper with handbrake off, is there a danger of handbrake coming on while driving on its own
Can you use power from the battery on the car to do this?? Thanks.
Great video thks bro it was 💯 useful
Gleaming and useful. Squared us right away
What capbadge were you?
Hello I recently got my discs and pads changed on my Audi a5 now the breaks are sticking - they were not sticking before!! When I took the car back to the garage they took everything apart and fitted the discs and pads again & they are still sticking !! Now they are saying it’s the rear right calliper that is causing the problem!! But I never had this issue before it went into the garage & I said how did you not know that the calliper was like that doing the breaks twice !! They said it’s working fine all the tests were fine!! But there going to charge me £280 for a new calliper and I have the strangest feeling the breaks are still going to stick !! Any ideas what’s going on if the breaks stick when they put a new calliper on ?
thanks! does it work with a small 9v battery too? like the ones u use in a firealarm for your home
Yes apparently so..there are vids using 9 volt battery to wind motor back..I.ll be doing it that way 👍
Do you need to do this if you are just cleaning/lubing the caliper pins?
looks like it needs new caliper not pads ha good video cheers if you unplug the plug on the bentley gt you get a fault code up is that true please
Worked good.
Does this work on any car with same setup I wonder. Probably??
Could i use a car battery for this job?
Will it also work with a 9v battery?
helped out thanks !
I used this method and it worked fine, but now the auto hold feature on my 2018 VW Tiguan isn’t working, any advice?
Shocker. Take it to the dealer so that they can gouge out your eyes with a new electronic brake caliper.
Do you really need a 12v battery? Maybe a 9v will do the job?
I have heard that does work. I really wanted a 9v battery to fit into the connector as that would have made an amusing video, but sadly it didn't!
Does this method work on a 2016 Q5?
Did you open the lid of the brake fluid reservoir while doing this?
Ive done this before on my car no need for that
Thank you
Does the piston rotate on these to return them back or can you use a clamp ? Many thanks
They just push back on these electric VAG calipers
The whole thing popped out how to get it back in
How you sorted poped out piston? I did my breaks today and I used computer to close e breaks but did wrong way and piston was out but not all the way out i assume as i managed to wind it back
Hey I did everything but forgot to retract. I turned the car on and pushed the e brake button and now it says e brake malfunction, I forgot to retract back once I replaced the brake pads and turned on car like that
Did you get this figured out???
@@MrRicoRelz did you figure it out
@@user-tf3in5vn6i yes
@@user-tf3in5vn6i i was able to put power to the Caliper and activate the piston to retract.
@@user-tf3in5vn6i i did this exact technique and have been since the day I’ve leaned it and applied to any set up as such if i don’t have access to a scanner
Can someone please tell me which of the two large and two small wires for a 2007 D3 Audi A8L should be power or ground to retrofit these calipers to another car? Which of the smaller wires are signal/trigger wires to activate the electromagnetic solenoid and clamp the rotor? Thank you
The two fatter spades inside the plug in are what you use
Why do not use the switch? it has two position one is for stop, and one for release, use these position for that you need. when you pull up one position it is brake, when you press down other position it is released.
It only releases enough for the pads that are in. If you want to install new pads and or disks you need more space
Yes i did this too with switch on dash! Release p.b and open the bleed screw on caliper and force the piston back, this way fluid is not pushed back into the abs unit. When done on both sides just operate switch on dash! Easy as doing front pads! 😊
Could you not just put the handbrake on after installing the pads to wint out the piston??
I think it will also work in this case. I assume the car computer doesn't know the exact position of those motors.
WHAT IFF THE MOTOR PUSHES THE PISTON ALL THE WAY OUT
Where can I buy the tool to push back the piston?
You can get the piston tool in any good motor shop or online
What do do if the piston wind out totally the wrong way
Pray 🙏
Does this mess up anything with the computer as far as positioning is concerned?
No, I would imagine the computer monitors the current draw of the motor, as there is no sensor on the motor.
How coulld it? There is no data line going to or from the motor. Only power. As long as you use the 12v power to push it back to the disc, it will be where it needs to be.
@@Fluxtroid interesting fact is that the Computer knew that I left the parking break connector unplugged. It was saying that there is a fault with the EPB
Could I use a battery charger or just a normal Car battery?
A charger works fine
Yep most cars have a 12V battery
@@clomagro I know that
Then why did you ask a question ⁉️🤣
@@clomagro I didn’t ask what voltage a car uses for it’s battery. I asked if I could use a fucking car battery to do the job.
Works a treat. I did this at the weekend on my renault scenic. I used spade connectors to make a more solid connection to the terminals and prevent sparks pitting the connector but other than that just the same. good video :-)
Here is me doing that similar job on the Grand Scenic Mk3! ua-cam.com/video/kGn7tEjr600/v-deo.html
Good
Kind of answered my own question here but if you rewind the caliper while still on the old disc and pads surely this will negate the risk of getting the polarity the wrong way and risking piston pop out?? I've never done this so don't know if I'm speaking out of my exhaust?
Just touch the wires briefly to see which way the piston moves. It won't move that fast.
Sounds like it would work but since it is coming off to allow the pads to be changed then just do it like this. You might break it if you make it squeeze the disc and fry the motor?
Anyone know how to remove the brake line on a s5 2009? Any help helps!!!
Andre Medina try talking to a garage if you don’t know about brake lines then don’t fuck with them... they have to be done properly or you risk the safety of you and other road users.
@@andremedina6886 use a vise grip if the head is buggered
I fuck with you sam
