This is so fantastic. I really love First Utterance as a whole but this song is just a masterpiece. It’s their masterpiece. I’d put this in a film if we’re a director it’s so emotional and ambient. It really lends itself to contemplation. The melody’s in this song are just divine too. This song would be popular in the prog world if it were released today.
Spotify threw this at me and i thought it was a new band lol I looked up a picture of them and saw them so young, I was like oh I'm following these young indies This song to me sounds like pagan music from The Wicker Man (when the naked ladies are dancing around the fire) which was also out in the 70s. It made me feel like this song was supposed to be scary and dark and kind of witchcrafty. Maybe it is, I'm still learning but by the lyrics it doesnt seem so.
As a single star glides swiftly down the night A soft wetting note issues from the time-worn flute Frowning slightly the herald listens wistful across the night And from way back behind the day comes the echoed answer The day advances oh so softly his shadow lengthens and his voice is mute But clear his flute and sadly walks forward followed by the day Herald of morning walks across the earth eternally Oh, Aah And somewhere in the black distance Another herald puts down his flute And the dewy dawn creeps on And the night withdraws The day advances oh so softly his shadow lengthens and his voice is mute But clear his flute and sadly walks forward followed by the day Herald of morning walks across the earth eternally Oh, oh La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-laa La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-laa La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-laa La-la-la-la-la-la-la-laa
I must have heard this song about 10 or 20 times before it dawned on me that, for the whole middle section, there is just one acoustic guitar and nothing else. That finger-picked section is just so *_BIG,_* in every sense of the word.
@@colinhtk to me, sounds even better. If you listen to a lot of her other singing on the original album,.. she misses quite a bit,... but here she is spot on,... really pretty amazing.
Great playing, but it almost sounds like that guitar part which was so sharp on the original recording is being played on nylon. Very subdued in places it maybe shouldn't be. Glad these guys still got it
THAT SOUND CAME FROM A BASS?! AWESOME!!!!!!
Sound like Godspeed You as never sound.
Andy Hellaby..credited for slide bass
My thoughts exactly. I always assumed that was a theramin.
I thought it was a singing saw
Its called Glissando Guitar, If you like that sound, then check out steve hillage, or GonG,

music from the best album of all modern times
Hi.
Totally agree with you!!!
Un capolavoro passato inosservato
This song is easily one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.
bobbie looks REALLY good for her age.
9:25 gives me Ennio Morricone vibes, absolutely one of the greats right here
My favourite Comus song
One of the most beautiful and sinister, subtle and haunting songs on the planet
This song terrifies me and I love it
Makes me think that there is something to this experience we call life. Thank the heavens for the sounds of Comus.
Bobbie's voice didn't age at all.
Oh my god... Chills up and down. I would have loved to have seen that show!
That's exactly my feelings

One of my favorites, her voice in this is amazing.
Basically a perfect album and snapshot of a magical and mystical time. Thank you so much for posting this!
Amazing musicianship just like on the original, and oh my god how is it possible that Bobby's voice still sounds so great?
Otherworldly Comus ❤️
Stunning!!

fucking amazing! That's their best song in my opinion
As a single star glides swiftly down the night
A soft wetting note issues from the time-worn flute
Frowning slightly the herald listens wistful across the night
And from way back behind the day comes the echoed answer
The day advances oh so softly his shadow lengthens and his voice is mute
But clear his flute and sadly walks forward followed by the day
Herald of morning walks across the earth eternally
Oh, Aah
And somewhere in the black distance
Another herald puts down his flute
And the dewy dawn creeps on
And the night withdraws
The day advances oh so softly his shadow lengthens and his voice is mute
But clear his flute and sadly walks forward followed by the day
Herald of morning walks across the earth eternally
Oh, oh
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-laa
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-laa
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-laa
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-laa
that voice, omfg.
Incredibile,
thanks.

Is it Bobbie Watson singing? Wonder how she managed to save her voice so well, sounds just like on album.
Yes it's Bobbie - her voice is still amazing.

Isn't it easier for women to keep their signing voice as they age when compared to men?
Amazing!

Amazing! Thank you. :)
Amazing group, they all feel connected playing.

Sometimes it looks like the bassist is playing a banjo
I know he's not....illusion
Lmao true

No they didn’t
Haha yes they did !! Wow
SHUT UPPPPP. DAMMMM.

COMUS! 👌💕
Hell yeah brother
How excellent a rendition, could not tell it from the studio version.. but when was this performance?
Great playing, but it almost sounds like that guitar part which was so sharp on the original recording is being played on nylon. Very subdued in places it maybe shouldn't be. Glad these guys still got it
