Now, I don't want to be racist here but a leader is only as good as the qualities of his countrymen. If you have people who do not want to work hard, no leader can bring a country out of 3rd world. I am a Chinese and I hire people of different races across the world. Of all the races, or should I say nationalities, Kenyans are found to be the laziest and most irresponsible of the bunch.

@nnaaeee And yet up until 20th January 2017, the leader of the free world was a half-Kenyan man by the name of Barack Obama? I think any time you think about prefacing a statement with "Now, I don't want to be racist", you should realise you'd do better by not saying it at all. There are lazy and irresponsible people of the Chinese race just as there are in any other race. And I of all people would know because I'm half-Chinese. Good day.

I have visited this beautiful country nearly six times and can say that the success of Singapore is three fold : introduction of tough laws, discipline and hard work, an autocratic government which is a 'sine qua non' recipe for SUCCESS. On the other hand, too much democracy and laissez-faire will automatically give rise to social problems among any nation.

I'm American, I respect this man so much after reading his life story and accomplishments. Lee Kuan Yew was one of the most brilliant Statesmen of the 20th century. He was a man of action and results.
He was not a man of demagoguery, moral posturing, or flashy speeches. He simply delivered prosperity, development, and united a country that is so diverse. Racially, ethnically, religiously, and politically.
I severely hope that American politicians can learn from this man, but truth be told modern American politicians are spineless and only care about poll numbers. The Era of great and revolutionary political leaders who have the spine and commitment to do the right thing is now gone, it's all about polls and popularity. Which is why the American republic has become so dysfunctional over the years.

Now Singapore is loosening up on this, not as tight as before. You have to understand why LKY restricted people in earlier days. Singapore was left alone to die, in order to survive, he has to be stern, no time for nonsense. He cannot afford anyone to screw it up. It was really tough, especially with at least 4 races together. He has to ensure no fights between races and religions, we have to build Singapore together, if anyone said something that would lead to a riot, he would put them behind bars. Was he wrong? To others, he may be a dictator, but to me.. no. Without his iron fist in politics, Singapore will not be as prosperous as today. He sacrificed his whole life for Singapore. You can watch his speech after we were separated by Malaysia, you can feel how he felt at that moment, it was really do or die. And Singapore made it. He made us so proud. Try to understand him, I saw him in person before, behind his stern look, he was a very humble kind man, he really was. He wasn't a dictator, he did it for Singapore and his people. Please do not misunderstood him, he was a great leader, a great man.

m4rs12 Get over it. You keep harping on the past that he is a tyrant and imprison oppositions blah blah blah. There comes a situation, where if oppositions don't die, Singapore will die. Why?
There are not just 1 opposition. He can allow that 1 opposition to continue his bullshit, and it will grow from 1 to 100, 100 to 1000 and ultimately big enough to cause CHAOS, and drop in National Security and Confidence. By that time, Singapore will reduced back to a swamp, and democracy is the LAST THING on your mind.
Indeed.. We enjoy more things now. Which means we have MORE TO LOSE than we were in the mud era. Instead of trying to destroy it, you may wish to preserve it.
Look at the big picture. The fact is, MAJORITY of us are living well. What most Singaporeans want are Homes, Educations, Healthcare and Jobs and pursue our own Passion in life.
Thus, stop your nonsense. Because it takes a time of generation to build up Singapore, but it takes few days of riots and political instability to bring it all down and go back to square one.
There is only 1 chance for Singapore, that is to MOVE UP by being more tighter and disciplined. You unwind that, it is curtains for everybody.

A visionary n even handed leader who is fond of giving witty responses and though provoking answers to interviewers n questioners alike. The heavy burden and extremely difficult task of nation building was placed upon his shoulder by Singaporeans, he has to do his duty as a native son. All reporters like to think his job is too easy, conveniently ignore the complexity n difficulty in governing a resources less new island nation , always compare Singapore to all other wealthy and big country .

I'm from India, but adores this man. For all you Americans, Singapore is a role model country that transformed itself from one of the poorest to third richest in world. A nation where there is religious pluralism (Your USA has that?), prosperity and economy with 7000 MNC, 26,000 international companies, and 1,00,000 for their 5 million people. One of the four Asian Tigers, Singapore is gateway to Asia Pacific and headquarter for almost all MNC, since it has people who act a broker and communicate in APAC which is complicated. Safest place for women, kids with low crime rate, one of the cleanest place? (USA is full of crime, drugs and guns problem). Lee said in 1965 it is an equal society and Singapore will never have race riots. He proved what he said (Singapore is not a pimp like USA is to Israel). Have some respect for other nations, great leaders if you cannot build your own nation as role model before opening your mouth.

By reading some of the comments in here, it shames us to realise like my fellow countrymen Indians, very few knows history of Asia and particularly Singapore. During Singapore initials days after getting independence from Malaysia, he had long battle with communist, language chauvinist (racist who says their accent or language is superior) and religious extremist. Singapore had volatile neighbors like Malaysia (little fanatics there), Vietnam which was invaded by USA, Indonesia (Internal problems), Cambodia (khymer rouge genocide of 4 million) and broken Japan after nuclear bombing done by USA. He led it from front and countered issues. Singapore became model in removing corruption, inviting investment, its water recycling is model of world of preserving water. land management, building smart cities, maintaining social harmony by cutting the wings of media who acts as fourth estate

mizaroon jkr Believe it or not, Singapore has absolutely no intention of returning to Malaysia. It is a society governed by a divergent set of principles as compared to Malaysia. When one has been driving a turbo-charged Ferrari, why would one want to swap it for a highly-defective Proton? In any case, I have been noticing your comments on many Singapore-related UA-cam clips. Perhaps the unhealthy obsession with Singapore is with yourself?
