Just be pragmatic, what you want is good governance, regardless of the ideology. Since the cold war, most countries and people today have the presupposition that there is and must be a governing ideology that is of absolute righteousness, namely democracy. But in reality, every governing ideology has its flaws, for the longest time about 50% of the democratic countries remained poor, third world and suffering. Today, we are seeing even the best democratic countries starting to fail and produce poor performance. IMO, focus on good governance, what actually needs to be done to produce results, do not focus on ideology. Singapore and China made so much progress because they were pragmatic. Singapore choose the democratic path as the base but employed both socialistic and capitalistic policies and mechanism preserving the pros and eliminating the cons. China realized that communism has failed, and was able to move on and adopt capitalism in global engagement and retain socialistic policies in domestic affairs. Even in western countries, where policies and governance are heavily capitalistic, they always had socialistic mechanisms like tax, social benefits, healthcare etc for balance. Unfortunately those socialistic policies are broken today and we see capitalism run amok in the west causing massive social problems and wealth inequality.

Surprising that a Tamil speaking Jayakumar did not correct the Harvard man that the languages are Chinese Mandarin, Tamil NOT Indian, and Malay are the official languages of Singapore
Because not all Indians in Singapore are Tamilian. If you want to really nitpick than you can name all the Chinese dialects and all the regional Malay dialects there are present in Singapore.

Lee Kuan Yew was indeed a "grandmaster" of get things done. But did he do the RIGHT things? His metrics were annual GDP growth and "concrete on the ground", i.e., infrastructure. These are the wrong metrics. Singaporeans are the ONLY asset of Singapore. Singaporeans ARE Singapore. The correct measure is the QUALITY OF LIFE of Singaporeans (as measured by real wages, productivity, work quality and standard of living). Singapore is NOT First World using the quality of life metrics. "What gets measured get managed." The grandmaster did NOT measure the right things. The rest is history. If Singapore is a REAL democracy (with basic freedoms, free press, openness and transparency in Government making elections free and fair) it would have a COMPETITIVE political system with the right economic metrics. Democracy is a "messy system" but all the others tried before turned out worse. Competition is always good even in politics. The best ideas are implemented and there is a mechanism for orderly change of government. What countries need is not a "grandmaster" but a "grand political system" called democracy with an effective education system. BTW Lee Kuan Yew limited to a small minority (around 20%) the number of young Singaporeans that can go to universities in Singapore despite steadily increasing reserves and perennial budget surpluses. Uniquely Singapore. Singapore has massive reserves but it cannot buy time. Lee Kuan Yew is gone and he is not coming back. RIP. Time for Singaporeans to move on and. They should QUESTIONS EVERYTHING (ask "hard questions" and demand answers) and make changes, if necessary, to have a better quality of life. What do you think?
