Man I can't even imagine what those people went and were going through. The through of knowing that you're going to die is something I hope I don't have to experience. May they Rest In Peace and to the 2 survivors, may they find the peace to live with. I know that's a heavy burden.
I'm sorry, but this is so completely unacceptable for the families of the missing. With today's materials and technology, there needs to be a complete redesign of the survival equipment currently approved for and in use to give these guys a fighting better chance at survival. Something like the cruise ships have, but on a smaller scale. There should be maybe 3 hard shell boat capsules, 1 on the bow, and over both stern sides of the fishing vessel depending on which way the boat happens to list, that all deploy. and each of these boat capsules big enough for 5-7 guys and have waterproof flap doors and also have room to slip into extra dry suits already in them along with emergency heating,food and water rations, portable marine radios, and extra satellite beacons,and bilge pumps for the guys to make it to the closest one as the boat is taking on water and then once inside survivors can be in constant contact with coast guard who can zero in on each survivor location easily. Money should be no option when considered against the cost of human life and the loss of the vessel.

Some of you are naive, clueless. Try putting socks on in 10 foot seas, or 20 foot seas. You can't de ice crab pots in freezing spray. They have nylon webbing which ices from spray of each wave. Watch FV Wizard on UA-cam "Rogue Waves. " In addition, the person who says need better designs clothing, suits etc. The water temperature is a little above freezing and hypothermia sets in immediately. Now add wind. Look at how difficult it is for a lame ass fire department to pull out a kid or dog from a frozen pond, river etc and how long it takes, and what they wear. The boat probably had a catastrophic issue, ie broken weld, plate, leak, ballast or flooding issue. Unlikely it just listed iver due to ice. The ice or being top heavy may have aggravated the list. And when your in 20 foot plus seas at night, thrown out of bunk in narrow stateroom downstairs and have to crawl, drag self to wheelhouse and about to sink. No one is going to go look for people lolly dag for minutes to try drag a guy upstairs sideways knowing as a 15yr vet the ship is sinking and in peril. As it was they barely got suits on, barely got out of wheelhouse and would be dead had not found raft period and swam to it. The only reason he made comments about Epirb, safety issues is he is going to sue boats insurance company and settle a case. I'm a retired 10 yr vet of crabbing Bering Sea 89 to 98 when death rates were much higher than now. Now it's IFQ not derby style...safety improvements, less fishermen, Coast Guard better. It's not like yr on east coast with coast guard all over etc. It was night, a storm. I can guarantee they didn't abandon fellow crew members. It became a situation of survival and extreme peril. Even if I don't like a guy, there is a code of brotherhood and guys will do all they can to save another man's life, the ship. So please stop speculation about things you do not have one scintilla of knowledge of, or are too lazy to Google facts, educate yourself. The Scandies Rose was a very good seaworthy boat. The boats used to be made of wood, the men of steel. Now the boats are made of steel and the men made of wood. Commercial Fishing is one of most Dangerous jobs around, crabbing is even more dangerous. More dangerous than cops, military, fire fighting, linemen, logging, so enjoy your wild crab free of antibiotics and don't whine about the price. RIP boys. My condolences to families.

@Mike M No. You need to get a better idea as to what happened. The boat iced up and was listing for several hours. For some unknown reason, an experienced Captain didn't wake the crew to breakup the ice... Jon & Dean were woken when the boat tipped sideways throwing them from their bunks. Dean is the one who handed out the survival suits. The last one for himself. He's the one telling the crew to get off the boat when he and Jon got washed overboard by a huge wave. But for the luck of a lifeboat popping up from the boat after it very quickly went under, likely neither of the 2 survivors would have lived.
