    Brilliant! Your improv soloing over parts this is a masterclass. I love this standard, I know it’s been done to death by the legends of jazz over the years but I never get sick of it. Fantastic lesson.

    Your the man Tony. Brilliant improv for which I can only dream of being able to. If at 8 years of age until I was 16 my piano teacher had taught me chords, progressions and improv instead of note reading I would be well rounded by now instead of plodding along trying to learn this stuff. I'm 67 now but I will persevere.

    It's extremely important to become comfortable with all keys..it quite a while sometimes. Learning something with one finger and saying it slowly imprints the true scale or chord. This is how a child learns things. As we get older we just start using finger patterns Czeryny , Hanon and whatever our teacher teaches us... By learning the c scale for example we use 123 12345 on an eight note patern.. as the years pass we associate the fifth with the pinky. That's one more thought sequence that the beginner has to deal with..which slows the learning and playing down. But ask the newer learners what the sixth is and there tends to be a quick count up. 123456 .. oh yes in c that's a .. teachers teach what they learn..also part of teaching is the parent and the student wants quick results.. Also we write out the alphabet and it is retained .. I make up charts or get one off the net. Fill in the notes of every scale..I never had one of my teachers do that. If someone is playing in b we have a little problem knowing what is the sixth .. ok if we took the time.. we haven't done it before because we didn't know. we would know it's it's g# ..now with this slow learn method. we know that b scale is b c# d,# e f# g#..oh we just figured it out..we counted to six.its g#.. we should know the degrees of our scales. .not have to count up to it.. . More to follow.

    The altered scale is exactly that they altered about everything there is the scale. In descending order if one flats everything except the tonic they will say the c altered scale c bb ab gb fb eb db c. Or c bb gb fb e eb db c. So it has a root b9 #9 third b5 # 5 b7 .. it has the root third and flat 7..all we need to make dominant chord. .. great video. I'm texting hope I got it all right but spell check sometimes just takes over.

  • @PIANOSTYLE100

    So Tony what I've noticed is when we say whole diminished. we do whole half.
    That fits a full diminished chord. For instance for the newer learners the dimished scale are c d eb f g b a. ect. Just stacked minor thirds.. This corresponds a c dim chord which is is( c eb gb a).. I've also noticed that the half whole dim.scale is just perfect for c7 # 9s.and alternate dominants. instead of of seeing the flat third as a minor 3rd.. we call it a #9. so c7 b9 is c db or or c # e g bb. . So we are free to solo using the half whole dimished scale. we On your video you alude to the fact that the f half hole and f# hole half. Are the same.. so Tony I kinda have a portion of the head knowledge but I can't apply it yet, getting there.

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  7 років тому +2

      OK I agree with most of what you said. However you said flat third could be called a flat9 but in fact it will be a sharp9 on a dominant 7th chord . I will try to clarify in a future video.
      Any scale can be used with any chord - your ear is the final judge, but in general, for a half diminished chord - c eb gb bb - a Locrian or Locrian #2 fits better. Diminished scales are usable on other chords but are most often used on diminished chords and dominant b9 chords.

    3:34, "that scale is actually Eb minor melodic ascending", you know Tony, I rather think of it like Db major without root because it fits context better (ii-V-i tritone sub Eb-D-Db). What do you think about such approach?

    Nice clear explanation of scales (or modes rather). Some very nice melodic ideas. However, a bit strange you using basic root chord positions in the beginning - maybe just for clarity's sake, eh? Oops sorry, I've just noticed that you've done a video on "open chord" positions. Anyway thank Tony for your most informative videos ; I'm enjoying them immensely.

    Still working on the autumn leaves. When you go from am7 b5 you go to the d7 dominant and decide from mix or diminished scales ; to use the altered d scale.. i understand that you wanted to give a different flavor to this passage, but why the d alt.scale. I notice that the alt d descending scale ( d c bb ab gb (f eb d) has a upper whole tone scale and the notes of the half whole dimiinshed scale at the start. I am finally beginning to see uses for the whole tone and diminished scales over dominates and altered dominant chords. I think others could use this info.

      PIANOSTYLE100 generally, in a minor 2-5-1 the 5 chord is a dominant 7th with altered tensions

    There are actually also the 3 equivalents of the descending half half hole: the 4 thirds stay the same but the Non-tones differ, 4o f them change... I like Cm7b5 (The riff adapted to those two..)Dm7b5 over D7, or even F#m7b5 the Riff from Art Thatum what Tony was teaching some other time...ambiguity of dominants!!! Delicious!

      Both scales fit the chord. You can extract the chord from the C Minor melodic ascending scale. The F pentatonic scale is a subset of the C minor melodic ascending scale. More importantly, both scales sound good over the a minor 7 flat 5 chord

    How do you know which type of diminished scale to use over the 5 chord?

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  2 роки тому

      C7 use C Db Eb E etc... Start on the root of the dominant chord ...go half-whole-half-whole and by then you will know which of the 3 diminished scales to use.

    A continuation of my last comment. For the new. Easiest way to quickly say the sixth.. is to learn that the flat seven is always one whole step below the root . With just a little practice.. the flat seven is quickly said or played...in c it's bb .. in g it's f. In eb it's db in b it's a .. in f it's eb .. this is doable in just minutes.. your hardest key doesn't matter.. go to piano go down a step with locked fingers.. Now I said the the sixth is very easy. One 1/2 tone below flat 7 is the sixth. Steps are c bb a. It's that fast...now you know the sixth.. just a whole step down from the sixth is the fifth .. whole step down from the fifth is the fourth. Ok if you read my last comment.. I approach things as a child would.. so let's go the keys and play the first 6 notes of db. That is db eb f (gb ab..bb.). Noticed the one in parenthesis that's the 4 5 6.. that's the three black keys in the scale of db.. put your 2 3 4 fingers .. on 456 notes . Now use finger three and say ab 5 ... now gb with finger two.. Say gb 4 now with finger four on the sixth.. say six and bb. Look how it relates to the flat seven.. it's important to eventually learn all your scales.. this is a beginners help.. but may help those that have played for years. .

    Let me ask you something. What scales can I use on each chords? For minor7, dominant7, and major7, what scales can be used respectively?

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  6 років тому

      Dun Mill you can use any scale on any chord. Generally you want the scale to include chord tones and some tensions that are permitted in the chord. If it sounds good, it is good. Hope that helps
      Look up ' scale syllabus '

    • @dunmill9632
      @dunmill9632 6 років тому

      Tony Winston I was taught to use Major scale,Major pentatonic, and Lydian mode on Major code, and Myxolydian mode, major pentatonic, and Lydiyan domimant on Dominant chord, and Dorian mode, Minor pentatonics, and minor blues on Minor chord. Is there no acceptable scale on specific chord? I’m quite confused now

    • @robertgloverjr
      @robertgloverjr 5 років тому +1

      Dun Mill on 7th chord you can play half step/whole step diminished scale BUT that scale has a major 13 in it. By instead playing altered scale (I.e. start a half step up and play ascending melodic minor scale) you get a flat 13 in the scale which sounds better when you flat the 13 in your dominant chord. Tony also suggests lydian dominant scale and blues scale for a 7th chord.
      For minor7 flat 5 chord Tony suggests ascending melodic minor scale starting on the chord's relative major. (ex:. For Am7b5 chord play "C" ascending melodicinor scale.
      Those are the ones I remember. Like yourself would like to have a complete list in one chart.
