  • Dawn has yet to break as 79-year-old Dai Mui begins her daily routine: collecting cardboard boxes from a 24-hour convenience store near her home. At 5am, Dai has already filled her metal pushcart with boxes, cans, plastic bottles, and satchels of expired bread. Read the full story here: www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/ar...

This is so sad! At age 79, you should be able to enjoy your retirement and do whatever you desire before the end of life. This poor lady has to wake up early everyday to go pickup used cardboards for money to pay rent, the government needs to step up to help the elderly. And shame on her children for abandoning her, this is heartbreaking!

My heart just sank and my eyes welled up! In public housing but her rent alone is double her pension. Her kids moved out.... They probably have families of their own and are probably just scraping by. But why not have grandma live with one of them? And the other sibling pitch in a few dollars every month? Her pension should cover her food and utilities at least. My parents are older than her but I'll be damned if they had to resort to collecting recyclables to pay the rent, food or property taxes. HK, come on?! How did you let your living costs skyrocket to Pluto without any government regulation and rent control? Where I'm from, the provincial government has these things in place so that living costs don't go way out of control. (The really poor HKers basically live in cages... It's their "apartment". Even pets will go crazy in them. Seriously look it up.) HK government, you ought to be ashamed of yourselves! And to young able-bodied passersby... Lift your fucking head from your smartphone and pick up her damn cart up and down the stairs!

  • @Steven-xf8mz

that's the thing about having kids, they're just an expense, not an investment. all the love she invested = sunk fund. Her kids could easily take her in, even if it meant sleeping in the living room. It's not like she eats much. the assistance she get from the govt may help out with food expense anyway....

After watching this video, nothing changed in HK. Gap between poor and rich is getting bigger. In 1999, I saw elders cleaning in McDonald’s, pushing carts full of papers for recycling. In 2006, more poor elders are still working and it’s still a heartbreak seeing them. In year 2014, this video is made by SCMP reporters. Nothing changed again. Main questions remain: why children do not help their parents ? (Maybe they don’t know or can’t also) why the government cannot help elders ? Government can afford to pay legco members from 65000 HK$ to 193000 HK$ per month!! Maybe it’s time to increase tax to decrease poverty ... but HK is scared to loose its place in Financial world. HK is still a tax haven with 10% of income tax! What’s next after 2018?

Nikos V yes it is the government is horrible ever since 97 when china took back over. under British rule you would never see homeless people. after 97 china took back over they release 100000 of china immigrants to HK per day over populating the city, jobs, hospital, school, transportation, housing!

I did the math and there is no way she can pay her rent with the old age government money and the money from selling cardboard and newspaper.

Sad...heartbreaking! She should be taking it easy, playing with her grandkids, enjoying her twilight years with the sun on her face, not carting newspapers and cardboard up and down the streets! Where are her kids? This makes me so mad! She puts some young ones to shame eith her work ethics and sprightliness! Hong Kong is so rich - HELP YOUR POOR AND ELDERLY!!

the hardest thing isn't picking up cardboards mindlessly; it is to be at peace with your fate and to lose any other hope, to accept the fact our lives have amounted to this finale. Did I lead it meaningfully, or is it filled with regrets. That's the greatest pain.

sad part is not collecting newspaper and cardboard boxes at the age but having worry for the basic necessity at that age and in hongkong it just makes things worse.

If this is a common thing in having kids in Hong Kong and them abandoning you when you are old. Then i guess it's easier not to have kids.

We all need to put in more of an effort next time we see these ladies on the street collecting cardboard and newspaper! Please offer them some water or money, or even offer to help them carry or push the cart, even if its just for a small distance. Every little bit of effort counts! they need to know that us younger generations have not forgotten about them and that they are important to us and they still matter! Let them know that we do care!!

So sad where her family??? Why aren’t they caring for her. I don’t care what it took never never would I have my grandmother or mother at that age basically having a job. If my granny needed her rent paid I’d would be out there doing the recycling!!! No elderly in any country should have to live like that worrying about rent. I’m so glad my family value our elders in our family we never leave them alone .
