Hi Barnabas, this is a fascinating exploration of Ricoeur's thinking on a variety of subjects (I'm not pretending I was familiar with him, just expressing my admiration). For what it's worth, I have a few thoughts.
First, on the ""someone says something to someone about something" points, I suppose I mostly agree, but it parses out a bit differently for me; the fourth point, that there is an objective reality, would be an immediate area of agreement. The subjective framing of - or experience of - that objective circumstance would certainly apply to both the speaker and the listener based on their life experiences. And of course, there is the at least one method by which that framing is created. For the listener, it is what is spoken about (the "says something" above). Of course, the speaker needs to have gotten the idea from something. It is either an experience or perception of that presumably objective reality, or someone else communicating with them. Great stuff, and for me, the essence of the problem of communication. We all frame the world with different models. Facts, concepts, experiences, and communications fit into those differing models differently. As you pointed out, Ricoeur worked hard to try to understand the models of people he differed with (stating their best arguments). It's a problem for us all unless you're lucky enough to be speaking with someone who sees the world exactly as you do :). And it is the true meta-level challenge of communication. How can you help your listener see your models (framework for understanding), and how can you learn to understand theirs?
I will admit to getting confused about the discussion of Descartes 'unshakable foundation of knowledge' - consciousness. I get it that his famous quote suggests that, and I agree that it is true, but I think his general thesis was that things are what they appear to be (or, with careful observation, what they measure to be.) The remainder of the discussion, "dark desires", "surface level pretense" etc. (not sure I can remember the words he used) seems to be pointing out that human beings are in fact, complicated and fallible. We are influenced by all kinds of things, from early indoctrinations, to psychological influences described by Freud and others, to instinctual and hormonal impulses. Yep. But does that in any way invalidate the goal of Cartesian thinking to measure and strive for objective truths? It doesn't seem so to me. So in a way, that whole part of his discussion seems like a straw man argument that can be pretty easily dismissed.
This matches up pretty well with our earlier discussions where I expressed my intent to live subjectively, but to remain informed by objective measurable truths.
Anyway, thank you for this articulate and thought provoking discussion. Also, as George mentioned, the sound cuts out between 38 and 39 minutes.
    Tom

@@barneyaspray I do subscribe to the website and I cannot find this video there. There is a lecture by Anthony Thiselton on Ricoeur, but I am unable to fine this one. It makes me sad because I was enjoying the lecture.
