    I am a few weeks away from starting my job in customer service. I never leave the house alone and only go out with people who know all of my psychiatric and physical issues. I am terrified of being alone due to PTSD. I need the job and need the money but it isnt a mentally sustainable.
    A service dog would be enormously helpful and I would buy a pre-trained dog.. but I can't afford it. It's a vicious cycle. I cant work because I need a service dog. I need a service dog because I can't work.
    I'm going to have to suck it up and make my mental health worse just to get money. I wish it wasn't this hard.

      I would be in the same boat if it were not for my family allowing me to live with them until I can get on my feet, even then I think I will end up travelling for work (accommodations such as shared housing are typically provided when your work needs you to travel). I am aggressively saving for what I need later now, however the only thing I can suggest is saving as you can.
      I am curious if you live in Canada or the US (I can only speak for Canada) provinces have disability grants for school so you can get a job that better suits your needs (in this case maybe accounting for example if you have social issues)

    when i was training my service dog i had someone that claimed to train service dogs tell me that the type of blocking that you are showing was "aggressive". there needs to be a general consensus on what techniques are trained. many think they know because they train dogs. a PTSD service dog has to be trained for the veterans individual needs but still have a base of things like blocking and as you call it crowd control as shown. other dogs need to be trained for the issues their owner needs and the tasks they need to preform.
    when i trained my pitbull angel she would naturally sit and watch behind me while i stood in any line. i think she sensed my danger area was behind me and not being able to see what was coming up behind me. she would alert me by pressing into my leg, getting up and standing behind me or give a low type of growl if you could call it that. more like a muffled quick woof/grunt type sound. (had someone come up quickly behind me is what the cashier said and it didnt look like a good way of doing it).

    I’ve been diagnosed with Social anxiety, general anxiety, panic disorder, sensory processing disorder, and depression.
    Any social interaction or sensory things(like bright lights, different noises, different materials, etc.) can set me off and easily be overwhelming for me. Every time I go out in public, I end up dissociating, or having a panic/anxiety attack and have passed out once before and come close to passing out many times, and try my best to hide and avoid being seen, being approached, or avoid different sensory issues.
    Because of this, I don’t talk to anyone, gotten bad depression, and recently just had to switch to a smaller school with more support for my mental health and grades
    Would I support dog be helpful for me to have? (If so) What’s the first step for me to get one?

    • @eggthedog
      @eggthedog 4 роки тому +18

      you can make a list of tasks that you feel the dog would benefit you from doing, and go from there! my boy is for similar things and a few tasks he does to help with sensory issues and dissociation is laying on my thighs and applying a hard pressure to ground me (which helps prevent meltdowns or sensory overloads) and when i start to dissociate, he will start messing with my hand (lightly biting, licking, and just being annoying) to 'bring me back' if that makes sense? you could also speak to a psychiatrist or a GP, but i know that isn't an option for everyone, so making a list of tasks might be beneficial! a good rule of thumb is asking yourself these questions:
      1- does my dog have at least 3 tasks that would help me regain independance and mitigate my disabilities?
      2- am i at a point in my life where i can deal with telling people to stop petting/talking to my service dog, and/or answering questions about the dog at any given time
      3- do i have the financial stability to put towards training, gear and health checks?

    I show many signs of anxiety disorder, depression, ADHD/ADD, and PTSD. I am no way near self diagnosing. My mom has anxiety disorder and depression and my dad has bipolar disorder. (Both medicated) I do not want medication until I'm an adult, I am a young teen. ESA/ESD(s) are amazing and my mom said it would do me wonders in the future, but ESD's cannot go into stores, restaurants, ect. I get a lot of anxiety and stress in stores and restaurants ect. (ESDs also aren't train like service dogs are) I plan to track my mental health for about a year, if it stays the same or worse then I'm going to request I see a therapist. Again, I do not want medication until I'm an adult. My mom also liked the fact of a service dog that helps with anxiety, but then I told her the price (20,000 - 60,000) my family does well, not THAT well. Is there any way I could get one for a WAY lower price or for free? Thank you for reading this if you do.❤

      Some programs will help you with fundraising or are non profit and give free SDs. Owner training is also fully legal in the US and working with a trainer can be a bit cheaper than getting a dog that's already trained from a program. A lot of nonprofits are very limited in who they give dogs to, especially with psychiatric service animals

    There was once an incident in a store where I was standing behind my grandmother in line and another elderly lady came up behind me and pushed her cart against me. I moved forward a bit, and she pushed it against me again. My grandma noticed a shorter line and moved to it before telling me to follow. So then I threw my weight against her cart and walked away. She followed me to complain. Thank God, my grandma got involved because I don't just have SA; I also have BPD, and the manic stage isn't always the "happy" kind. More than 50% of the time, I get _livid_ and sometimes I want to _hurt_ somebody over the slightest offense. So, this may also help protect others from me, not just me from them.

    Okay so i've been thinking about getting a service dog for about 2-3 months now. I have moderate to severe anxiety, and or ADD. I don't really like crowds, and tend to have panic attacks in school like area and school. I have a 1 year old Mini Australian shepherd corgi mix named August. He is mildly aggressive towards new people. Do you think i can train him and do you think i could use an emotional support dog.

    • @ClicheDoodles
      @ClicheDoodles 4 роки тому

      First thing first: every dog is an emotional support animal lol, I say this because a dogs mere presence comforting you is not recognized as medical equipment under the ADA, and everyone loves their dogs and wants them out in public :) so for now just think, "ESA's technically don't exist- and any sign up sheet for them is a scam." Second: are you professionally diagnosed? What you have to do is be sure to do more research on psychiatric service dogs and talk to you doctor or (if you have one/plan on getting one) therapist. Training and vests and all those other things for service dogs do cost money, so it's not necessarily a "I train him, get a vest from amazon, boom, done." Thing haha 😂 I'm considering a PSD for myself also, because of speculated PTSD from psychologists, diagnosed Clinical Depression, Social anxiety, generalized anxiety, and dysphoria so basically going out or even sitting in my bed is a struggle. If you're serious about training you dog, be sure to talk to a doctor about it first so that a professional knows and understands that a. You have/want one, b. Why you think it would benefit you, and c. You understand the responsibility of high maintenance( MONEEYYY) , being the center of attention in most public spaces, taking responsibility for your dog acting out, and that bringing your dog out to the store with you as an "ESA" is really dangerous to actual trained service dogs (which could be your dog someday!) ESPECIALLY if you say your dog is aggressive sometimes. I hope this helps you narrow some things down and maybe we'll both find what helps us efficiently someday :) remember, a service dog isn't a robot that you train and they just become your right hand man and never have bad days or pee or poop and don't need to eat- it's still a living thing with emotions and you have to have even MORE patience for a service dog than you would a dog as a pet. Hope you have a good day :D 💞

    • @ClicheDoodles
      @ClicheDoodles 4 роки тому +1

      Also I'm sorry for your anxiety at school, trust me, I understand :( but be sure to consider that that could worsen with your dog in school because people would try to pet it, you would have to be able to refuse and stand your ground, you would have to have meetings and explain to the principals, you'll basically be bombarded with questions a lot, and this applies to any public spot. After a while, you get used to it haha 😂 also, you need to think about the fact that you'll be the center of your/this dogs world for YEARSSS, and not as a pet. You have to take your SD EVERYWHERE, for the benefit and safety of both of you depending on your mental illness/disorders severity. I'm talking the bathroom, shower, store trips will never be an "in and out" deal, over to relatives houses with your annoying cousins, I mean the whole package deal 💀 are you ready to spend 10-15 years of your life with a Service dog? It won't be hard after 2-3 years with them, trust me, you won't even care about people's nasty opinions anymore, but do you think you'll still be struggling with your anxiety 10 years from now? I'm also not sure about just taking your service dog and, "making them a pet again," it's something you have to ask an actual handler for now haha- AGAIN SORRY THIS IS SO LONG BUT THERE'S SO MUCH YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT! SERVICE DOGS AREN'T A ONE AND DONE, IT'S MONTHS OF TRAINING AND YEARS OF EFFORT AND WORK, SO BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR DECISION AND THINK IT ALL THROUGH! WISHING YOU THE BEST 💝

    • @AnoraJohnson
      @AnoraJohnson 4 роки тому +1

      Be very careful about working a dog with any history of aggression. Handling a reactive dog can worsen your anxiety. Additionally, any anxiety you experience will affect your dog. You and others around you, including other handlers, would be at risk. Your dog could face a crisis and even be put down as well if it bites or snaps at someone.
      I hope you find ways to meet your needs. If you do work with a service dog at some point, I hope you are able to partner with a calm dog who loves to work.
      No reason August can't be your amazing dog buddy at home, even if you work with another dog as a service dog. There can be room for both.

    Do you think this would work with a smaller dog? I really can’t deal with people being stood too close and it often causes me to have a panic attack or to stop what I’m doing and run away regardless of what it is. For example if I’m stood in the queue to pay at a shop, someone might come too close and no matter what position I am in the queue, I have to step out and get my space back before it builds to an attack. Smaller breeds are definitely less of a barrier than medium-sized or larger breeds but you absolutely can train your dog to do this. There's no reason why it wouldn't be able to learn... I just don't know how much actual practical success it would have at blocking because it's so tiny.

      Really if you have a small dog or big dog I guess, u can start on a small short stool. Then you want to grab a high value treat and press it against both ur third and fourth finger using ur thumb. This position allows you to lure ur dogs paw(s) on to ur legs. Depending on how fast ur dog is learning you can move up to sitting on a couch then a dinner table chair also while giving them less value treats until you can do it without treats. That’s it, I personally find it a lot easier to let the dog use both front paws on ur leg but u can also use this technique for just one paw

      As much socialization this doesn’t mean the dog has to live every person l, but they need to know how to behave around people. And most importantly, a reactive or fearful dog cannot be a service dog.

    Hello I just got a new puppy he is a basset hound and my family said you can not train basset hounds. I have severe ptsd and panic attack disorder and yes waiting in line these days is getting worse for me. My therapist recommended I get a service dog and so did my friends but I work for Disney I am trying to train my puppy at home to be a service dog but I don’t know how or if it is possible. I also struggle with balance at times to so hopefully I could train him for that to. Thank you for this video let me know if you have any advice please.

    • @AnxietyRat
      @AnxietyRat 17 днів тому

      Yeah basset hounds are definitely a little bit more of a stubborn breed but they can still be service dogs and you absolutely can still train them so your family is incorrect about that. Any breed can be a service dog... There are just certain breeds that are significantly easier to train than others. The basset hound probably wasn't the greatest choice for your first service dog, honestly. Ideally, you would pick a significantly easier breed to owner train.

    How would you train a service dog for severe epilepsy? No warning signs, maybe a 30 second window leading up to the actual seizure? When I say seizure I mean 4 of the lesser known seizure types, not Tonic Clonic. Atonic (the worst and most dramatic,bloody), tonic, simple partial, and complex partial. I don’t like the idea of falling on a dog, Atonic, and I don’t know how a dog can help when they have a Partial seizure. I am legally disabled and I do work about 26 hours a week, but I’m still not convinced a dog would help. Any thoughts?

    • @AnxietyRat

      Dogs that do seizure alerts are scent trained. So I would recommend looking up scent training and going from there.

    I’m sorry if you’ve maybe addressed this already, but I was wondering if when I’m doing public training with a younger dog if I absolutely need a “service dog in training” vest?
    I’ve lost the one I had in a move and I’m needing to train a SD from puppy again, but can’t afford a new one yet. 🥺
    Edit: I know it’s not legally required, but I’m wondering more so if I’ll be looked down upon if I’m training and socializing him without one until I can buy one?

    • @AnxietyRat
      @AnxietyRat 17 днів тому

      It depends on where you live, honestly. Some places in the world require a dog that is a SD in training to be labeled as a dog in training.... But other places don't have laws that explicitly say that.

      People with anxiety disorders and/or PTSD (including me) can trigger a panic attack by talking to a stranger. On other occasions, sometimes we can go mute and be unable to talk due to the stress. Hope that clarified!
