Great tips. I will try the raisins instead of jelly. I sometimes go tortilla based with tuna packets + mayo, pepperoni & cheese, pulled pork + mayo, PB & J, Italian sausage, heated precooked bacon. I sometimes make Pioneer Country Gravy and roll up the tortillas to dip in the gravy as a substitute for biscuits & gravy. I cook SPAM singles on the stove using a fork and add it to the tortillas.
Hey mate, very educational videos. I'm a trail runner in Australia so I usually miss all the sights as I'm running past but your videos give me an incentive to go for a hike one day instead of tearing it up. Moustache looks good too.
This was the first video I saw of yours and it's just too perfect! You speak so well and your videos are very compelling and informative! Your videos have added a lot to the way I backpack and eat on the trail. If Bob Ross and John Muir were the same person, his name would be Kurt Papke! Thank you so much for your impeccable content!
Great ideas - just came across your channel and been binging all your meal ideas. I’m a former-Arizonian and it was nice seeing a down to earth guy who just loves the outdoors instead of a bean counting sponsored hiker!
Awesome! Thank you! No, I don't take any sponsorships. I have a 12 year history of doing backpacking product reviews where they send me products to review, so lots of practice keeping my objectivity. I enjoy doing the food videos, but they are a lot more work than people realize.
Awesome, love genuine backpacking folks! I’m a former day hiker and new to the backpacking scene and not really into the “how I cut 8oz off my base weight” videos or the constant buying of new gear so I’ll have to check out your other videos. Sounds like you have loads of things I can learn from all your experience. P.S. you should check out Asian supermarkets since they have great dehydrated food options. See if you can find Korean pork floss, it looks similar to the pork shreds you use. Super cheap too!
Welcome. The burrito has become one of my trail favorites. I use whatever protein I have on hand, just happened to be the pulled pork when I filmed this.
Great video! I always enjoy when you're out in the field showing these ideas in action. I too always carry tortillas, but usually for a quick chicken or tuna wrap (foil pack of either + mayo packet), but these are some additional ideas I'll add to my list! Thanks for sharing.
Kurt, thanks for this one. Such simple ideas but so well executed. I love how you get me out of my box man. I can't wait to try any and all of these. +1 on the dope mustache.
Thanks! I've had the mustache most of my adult life, shaved it off 10 years ago to minimize the grey hair. Brought it back when I shaved off the beard from my road trip. Try them all! You'll be surprised how good they taste, yet so simple to do.
Great seeing you warming and finish cooking the tortilla, finally figured out you do need to warm brown them off more to finish slightly cooking them way Better Flavor. When i figured out that all dishes with tortillas from store have so much flavor.
We have never had a freeze dried meal backpacking and do a lot of the same stuff you do, but the cinnamon rolls and apple pie are new ideas to me and I'm anxious to try them! Toasting the tortillas and melting the cheese without a pan is genius! We toast tortillas and shredded mozzarella sticks in a pan, but use Boboli sauce for a pizza flavor. You can add shelf stable mozzarella, too. That's another good one. Thanks for the new ideas for the staple tortillas.
First off, I love the moustache. I love all of your videos. I wish my dad was this cool. Secondly, nice tortilla techniques, I'll be sure to try em! Lastly, just had an incredible trip 2 days ago to the very same canyon as this video Running low on water, on the last stretch of trail on the way to High Camp I told my friend with regard to the water source, "Kurt said it was perennial..." We were incredibly relieved to find a trickle of flow and a small stagnant pool! A far cry from the rushing waterfall and swimming hole seen in your video! Also saw a metate at high camp, absolutely mindblowing to realize that these camps have been around for a looooong time. The climb was pretty hard I must admit. My friend had a much heavier pack than me though lol. Ever consider hiking from top to bottom?
Kurt I've used this legendary combo many times, thanks tortillas are the best for trails. Kurt is a Pro! Were you near Tortilla Flats while filming some of this?
Nice video Kurt, I did dehydrated Elk burger, refried beans on a section hike of the PCT this past August. Do you stay in Tuscon during summer? Thanks Jim
22hornet reed nice! Never tried dehydrated elk, but it’s very lean I’m sure it worked well. Yes, we stay in Tucson most of the summer, but try to escape the heat for a few weeks someplace cooler. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Unfortunately for me, we don't eat pork and very little beef or chicken. BTW, I don't know if there is a Target store in AZ but they sell small packages of peanut butter thus obviating having carrying a jar. Glad I saw that you substituted raisins for peanut butter because I was not going to take a jar. BTW, I was raised in Nogaleses (plural) but haven't been back for 40+ years. Don't recognize them now from the news clips. Always loved Tucson.
Thank you for your informative comment! Yes, I did discover the small packages of peanut butter, and they are convenient but lots of extra plastic to carry out.
Great questions. I have a Nalgene flask for olive oil that I wrap in a paper towel and put in a ziplock. Some oil always dribbles out or wicks up the cap, so the paper towel contains that and the ziplock is keeps everything together and acts as insurance. I don't transport whole butter, I carry only ghee, also in a Nalgene flask. Ghee is solid at room temperatures, so not as many wicking problems. Hope this helps!
@@KurtPapke BTW, your video just popped up today. REI sells plastic flasks that could replace your Nalgene bottle. I've used them for liquid soap without any spills. Gave up on Nalgene bottles inside the pack after one of them leaked inside. Now I carry them upright outside the pack.
Kurt, are you related to the Papkes in Colorado? Grand Junction, Denver, Glenwood Spgs. area? My step-dad Tom, was from Grand Junction. Great video, thanks
I don't know if this was mentioned already but in your video when you are making the caramelo, you call the pork "simply shreds" @10:16. So I just Googled "simply shreds". I had closed captions on so I didn't see the note at the bottom of the screen. My results came back showing me pouches of really good looking meals in a pouch. Thank GOD I read further! Turns out, simply shreds is a dog food company! LMAO! I almost bought a bunch of 'em! It literally looks like people food. Thank you for posting the link to meatshredz.com.
Just began learning how to cook meals on the trail besides just rehydrating packaged meals. Just came across your video. ROFL 'cause I tried making bannock bread. That mess was overdone on the outside and never baked on the inside. Tossed out the whole thing. Torts much tastier than Ramen noodles.

I’m in Williams boondocking thanks for your help 😘
Lucky you, wish I was there! Thanks for your feedback!
Thanks 🙏 excellent lunch idea and like the tequila! Please explain storage!
Sure! The tequila storage is a 300mL Incognito flask from Vapur. Had it for years, works great, never leaks!
Really great food ideas! Thank you!
I appreciate the feedback Jason!
Useful tips. Thanks
You’re welcome!

Great ideas! Tortillas are pretty darn versatile and last a long time on the trail.
PBJ tortillas at the 'matonte' (sp?)rock holes where Native Americans made flour for centuries. Cool!
It’s a very cool place. I am headed back there tomorrow for the first time in several years to see how well it survived the Bighorn Wildfire.

Too funny/ironic. I run every other day, but roadwork only. I've aspired to do trail running, but can't seem to get started. Thanks for the comment!
Love the way you use the rocks and you lap for your preparation area.
Thanks. Been hiking in that area for years, and those big rock formations make for great seating!
Great tips. Going to use them at rest areas on road trips. Perfect for van dwellers and shtf preparation. Thank you.
Yes, I use them often at rest stops on road trips!

Thank you for sharing your time and passion of the outdoors
Your videos are great! We are going kayak camping for the first time and your tortillas recipes will be a hit with the kids! Thanks!!
Stefanie Wiley thanks so much for you comment! I was thinking of kids with some of the recipes.
Thanks for sharing Kurt, some good ideas.
have a go at some sun dried olives too, good fats and super tasty
TheHuntersHut don’t think I’ve ever seen those in the store
Glad you found it useful!

Good to hear! Not as many people carry/use tortillas as should.

Spot on!
i have the same gaiters. great video
I have two pairs of Dirty Girl gaiters, and wear them on every backpack trip.
Thank God a Boomer on the trail with a UA-cam channel. Right there with ya! 👍 Good vid!
A boomer am I. Thanks for watching Sea Trials.
@@KurtPapke Great no nonsense videos Kurt. I’ve been filtering through all the crud on you tube for this! New Sub!

You could use the applesauce in the Tortilla cinnamon roll AND in the pb & raisin Tortilla too.

Do any product/type of tortilla keep bette over a week on the trail?
Good question. I normally buy the Mission tortillas and they keep well.
I can't believe you haven't been snatched up by Scottsdale princess. Better watch out Chef they'll snatch you up!
I’ll have to search and see who that is! LOL!

Sorry, not that I know of. My family hails from Wisconsin. Unusual name, not many of us around!

Lol! Yeah, they changed their name a while back, very confusing.
Not a PBJ, but a PBR on the trail!

I thought that my friend and I were the only weirdos making peanut butter and raisin wraps!
Aren't they great? They're like a GORP sammich.
I like the GORP sammich thingy :-) Plenty of fat & carbs in that lunch!
@@KurtPapke It's such a great trail lunch.
Sometimes I throw in a little Nutella just to mix it up.
You need a sheet of heavy duty aluminium foil that you can wrap them up in as a makeshift cooking pan
Tried that, didn't work so well. Tore, probably due to sharp edges on this stove.
@@KurtPapke How about a small, low weight frying pan from MSR. Small torts will fit in it.
@@XJarhead360 I have a small Jetboil frypan that I never use. Just don't make enough use of it to warrant lugging it along.
12 tortillas easier to pack than 12 pieces of bread!
Yep, plus they don’t get stale or moldy. I am amazed at how long they last.
Just pack grape jelly that comes in the squeeze jar.
There are more options now, but the squeeze bottles are pretty heavy.
Or get a jelly pack from Bojangles!
That’d work!
Grapes sugar glycerin salt ascorbic acid
Depends on the brand of raisins. Sun Maid has nothing but grapes.
Agree with Kurt. Sun Maid raisins and cranberries so good on oatmeal or grits.
