Jim Davis is the whole reason the Garfield Minus Garfield book exists. He worked out a deal with Dan Walsh after seeing (and liking) Garfield Minus Garfield on the web, and had the book published through Ballantine Books, the company which publishes all his Garfield books.
Jim Davis seems to be a genuinely nice man and very humble guy I can’t understand why people would hate on him solely for being a “sellout” in their eyes (I am not against using the terms sell out and selling out and in fact I usually use them to but I don’t believe Jim Davis counts as one)
I loved having Jim Davis as a professor. He spoke to me alot about Garfield and my own art a few times and I will never forget it. He is truly a great guy.Living in Muncie....I never knew he had a garfield building at all!! I wish I had this much garfield merch heck XD
i feel honored, me and Garfield have the same birthday, year and everything. i used to read Garfield books alot back in the day and the only other one that even came close to matching the wit was "Calvin and Hobbs". Thanks for the memories jim!
No he is not. It’s just a comment of what happens for Jim’s death. But Lorenzo music was cats 🐱 voice. He died somehow. Voice actor of garfields is a person who died but Jim Davis is not he is just a creator for the franchise.
Adrian Dezendegui Bill Watterson is a petty guy. Bill Watterson is worth $100 million, yet he acts like he's the "little guy," and bashes cartoonists that are more successful than him. I felt the same way about Anthony Bourdain when he bashed Rachael Ray, Guy Fieri and Paula Deen. I'm all like, why are you bashing other chefs? Because they're more popular than you? Then we found out that Bourdain had a lot of demons, and issues he had been dealing with internally. I feel the same about Watterson. Not that he's gonna kill himself. But he's a recluse, and seems to have personal battles he deals with. To attack another cartoonist shows the type of person you truly are. He seems like an angry guy.
This is just my opinion, but I've always felt Jim Davis doesn't get any respect as a cartoonist. The attitude within certain circles is 'Garfield' has no artistic substance and is simply a bland, anodyne vehicle for mass market merchandise. The interviewer's stumbling, cumbersome question at 4:26 was an attempt to address this, before he aborted and followed with a truly odd and puzzling question about Garfield being a deity. (Truth: You would bail out of a question too, if you were going to call a really kind guy a hack to his face in his home.) Think whatever you want about Garfield, but do acknowledge, Jim Davis is great at business. He knows it's not high art. There are other comic strips that fall in that category. The only similarity between the two is the medium itself. Jim Davis is in the knick-knack business. He knows it, and he's masterful at it. For 40 years.
I can already see this going the way of Peanuts after Davis dies, because it's going to lose that thing that makes it truly special. Garfield will easily survive, but his essence will be gone.

6 years from now we'll be halfway through the next president's two terms. He's not going to win, he barely won against shitty candidate Hillary Clinton. America isn't going to make the same mistake twice and those who stayed home are going to come out in the millions. Trump, he's done.
This "report" primarily focuses on the merchandising of Garfield, with less than a minute of footage actually discussing the strip itself. Given Davis' motivation for the strip is licensing potential, I wonder what his stance is regarding Garfield's appropriation by meme culture similarly to Shrek or the Minions?
Ah I've loved garfield since I catched reruns of his show In the mid 90's. I own many buttons, pins, and book collections of the strip. Thanks so much Mr. Jim Davis♡

Some of it exists somewhere. But I don't think any finished footage was made. But I wonder if they have any voice recordings. I would love to hear Lorenzo Music voice again.
I WANT MY SLAW!! I also doubt any animation exists for GJD. I met Desiree Goyette (Nermal’s original voice and songwriter for Garfield) last month and I asked her about GJD since there’s footage of her recording a song for the movie in Garfield’s 10th anniversary special. She told me asides from the movie being considered too dark by multiple studios, another factor in its cancelation was CBS demanding more money when they learned Davis wanted to make a movie, which led to Davis filing a lawsuit against CBS to take the rights to Garfield back. Goyette said the lawsuit cost so much that it took Davis a couple years afterward to recover financially. This makes me doubt any animation was ever done, though I do wonder if maybe there’s some storyboards that were used as reference for the illustrations in the GJD book.
GuineaPigDan I would love to hear any voice recording Lorenzo Music did. He had such an amazing and unique voice. Nobody has been able to do Garfield justice ever since Music died. All the voices of Garfield since Music died, have been absolutely horrendous.
@@SirCaco I apologise for not knowing the interviewers name, but If you look closely at 2:20 it seems that he's leaning quite firmly on it, so it somehow would have made some sort of movement, so don't think it is an actual bench, I think Garfield is actually glued on there.
